Cooney is definitely a good shooter in warm-ups (no defenders), and surprisingly athletic -- gets up and dunks well for a kid his size. Looks like Jimmy Lee as a shooter (know that is only for the age-challenged members of this forum) -- good elevation, perfect form on his jump shot, rarely even catches any rim. You wouldn't want to play HORSE against him.

The question I have -- only because I haven't seen him in an actual scrimmage -- is whether he can handle against a tough defender and get his own shot.
Cooney's athletic ability is very under rated. Maybe you haven't seen this before:

Not what worries me. Three guards getting minutes is just fine... so long as all three stay healthy/out of trouble.

That's why I say I'd feel better with more numbers at guard.

Yup. Going into 07-08 we had Eric and Andy returning with Scoop and Jonny coming in.

That didn't work out, but long term it was great having Andy back for a 5th year.

In fact, I had seen that clip, but seeing him in person (Saturday in the Dome), Cooney got up higher, & dunked easier than what you can see in that clip.
MCW and Christmas were also impressive. With MCW, it is obvious watching him in games that he has a range of skills, dunks easily. Christmas doesn't show much in games, but in practice, he elevates and finishes in ways that Melo & Keita can only dream about. I am very optimistic about what Christmas will bring as soon as next year.

Uh. No. It's nothing like that.

Look, if other people feel good about running out a squad with only three guards on scholarship that aren't Mookie and aren't a former walk-on, that's great. I don't think it's unreasonable to say that it's probably a good idea to have a fourth though.
you don't get what I am saying, you say this like we always have 4 guards and we don't want to go into a year with only 3 and that is just not the case

we have had 4 good guards about as much as we have had a player like melo

Hey practice or not, I'll take it. The last time we heard that it was about Wes Johnson.

I was the one who kept posting about Wes in practice three years ago. I kept posting that he was both the best shooter and the best rebounder on the team in practice, an assertion that was generally met with skepticism here. I've seen TC in practice. He is, as we all know, a great shooter, but his current game is not as multi-dimensional as Wes's was.

well like someone joked earlier Wes was 3-4 years older than Cooney is

Getting Conney to committ to Syracuse was such a huge recruiting victory.

Not only does SU get a top 50 recruit who is willing to red-shirt a year...
Not only does SU get a potential 4-5 year "program guy" who will be pretty damn good as soon as next year for SU...
But he also was integral in getting Christmas to take a look at Cuse...

I think Cooney could be have a Rautins-type impact for a long time here. Can't wait to see him play live games next year.

Agreed Cooney and Christmas could very easily have been playing against us last week @ Nova.

That's not what I'm saying it all. I'm not saying we need a 4th good guard. I'm just saying I think we need a 4th guard on scholarship that isn't Mookie and hasn't ever been a walk-on.

ok well what I am saying is why? since this isn't the status quo, what makes you think/want another guard?

yeah, not many teams ever have 4 legit guards to rotate during a season. alot of teams just have 2, with maybe a third who's a big dropoff in talent/experience in spot minutes. regardless of apparent depth, any team is in trouble when one of their main-rotation players is out due to injury/off-court transgression - whether 3 scholarship guards or 4.

I think it would be nice to have a 4th guard since MCW is not getting a lot of experience this year. Yeah, he's playing but limited minutes. Only experienced guard we'd have coming back next year would be Brandon (assuming Dion's gone).

The good thing is that Brandon and MCW are both capable of playing the 1 and the 2 and that will give JB plenty of flexibility. TC's profile seems to make him a 2 all the way.

MCW will be experienced enough. sure we may struggle a bit early season and not be 20-0 again but I'm betting we'll be good to go by Feb.

CTO -- when you say something (about Wes), we know it is credible. Now, saying TC isn't at the level of Wes in practice is a given. Who could be, as a frosh? Wes had started for two years before transferring to SU.
The questions would be whether TC can get his shot in scrimmages, when defended by BT or Dion; can he beat a defender with his dribble and get into the lane; can he bring the ball up against a press?
Thinking of our guards in recent years, as underclassmen, who is the best comparison?

:bang::bang::bang:
In case one gets hurt or can't play for any reason.

This is really simple.

WHOA WHOA WHOA... hold the word up. You're saying you want a 4th guard who is capable of being something like Scoop Jardine was Freshman year after we lost 2 guards (Eric and Andy) that season? Thats like wanting 4 Kobe's, 3 Lebrons and half of a DWade. Quit being so selfish you SOB. Guards don't get hurt... they are robots.

Its great to want, but its not realistic to think we are bringing a guard with any ability in here next year, when there are three returning incumbents in front of him - two who will be underclassmen. That is assuming the Dion is leaving. If we feel like we need a fourth guard in the event of injury best course would be for JB to work on convincing Mookie to stick around for another year. You won't get a top level guy to come in because he isn't going to see available minutes in front of him. MCW is willing to play as little as he is this year because he is a likely starter next year or at worst (if Dion were to stay) part of a rotation like Dion is this year.

It's actually too bad Reese is a senior, right? He could be used next year in an emergency. He'd do a nice job too but I'm correct in thinking this is his last year, right?

I agree, I was just joking around. I just understand where ottointhegrotto is going with this. I propose we just grab a J/C kid with 2 years eligibility that knows how to dribble the ball. I love Mook and all but I prefer a guard that if he is one dimensional he has the ability to bring the ball up the court rather than one who can only shoot. If we weren't losing Brandon Reese I think this would be a non issue.

beat me to it you SOB.

Yes -- it is that simple. Have some protection against a freak injury.

And, as the #1 team, we have some cache to get into the mix with guards out there who haven't yet signed on the dotted line. It didn't seem that important before Dion blew up nationally. Now, Mike Hopkins can tell a prospect that JB will sometimes play a 4th guard, and you get a chance to compete with TC for more minutes.
