TCU and Gary Patterson part ways

He was a defensive coordinator before he moved up to HC. I always liked him in the Coaches' Room broadcasts during the CFP on ESPN.

Can’t remember name, but whatever happened to what’s his name?
Zach Allen. Transferred to Rutgers after 2 years and 2 attempted passes. Attempted 14 passes for RU; now a medical device sales rep.

Only Coach who’s made them relevant since 1938 has 3/4 mediocre seasons and gets canned. If this was for performance reasons, it’s a shame, he built that program.
It wasn’t.

The kid had never visited SU, he was fired up to play for Marrone and Hackett and once they were gone so was he. Interesting to hear what he is up to all this time later

TCU should benefit from OU and Texas leaving but I wouldn't ditch Patterson he could probably win big in the weaker conference.

In my opinion the 22nd amendment that put term limits into place is one of the smartest decisions our country has made. George Washington knew after two terms totaling 8 years a new voice was needed.

Patterson was successful for a long time but I feel strongly after a certain period most organizations can benefit from a new voice and perspective. Maybe even Syracuse basketball

Patterson did an admirable job now the administration wants to try something new. Seems fair to me.

Trends now nationwide in college football seem to be that coaches don’t last forever at one school. I believe Ferentz is the longest coach at Iowa. I am sure that even with his successful run there are a few Hawkeye fans who wouldn’t mind if he “retired.”

The guy was a loose cannon, was anti-player rights, NIL, etc. He said some things during BLM protests that would not sit well with a sizable portion of his players.

He’s the kind of coach that worked 20 years ago (my way or the highway) but was beginning to unravel. Results on the field and recruiting were headed downward.

Think P, but with way more baggage

Not to do the P vs anyone debate but you can critique P's performance (valid debate) but P had zero baggage. He was probably the most earnest/hardworking/well spoken person that has coached SU. I know you didn't insinuate otherwise (i think?) but P was a solid professional and probably was his undoing b/c he wasn't enough of a football hardo.

That’s fair. Not sure it’s different than what I said... “without the baggage”

Both coaches were absolutely awesome for long periods at a school, both are no frills, both were at the school long enough to have seen the natural decline that comes with long tenures. It’s amazing to have done what both have done.

in an alternate universe, P leaves Syracuse in say 1999 when Paterno decides to retire. We would have prob 20 threads of how stupid we were to see P leave during his peak and take Penn St to x amount of Big 10 titles.

funny how the world works when you attach a sliding door scenario to it. We'd also have 10 threads about how much of a bust George DeLeone was as HC in 2000.

P should have left in 1999. I think that was around the time everyone started investing $$$ into their program, and we had Shaw/Lou M hording all their concession and parking cash.

Loyalty to your company is great, but it should be a two way street.

Yep and I understand TCU making a change but it can always get worse too which we all are painfully aware of. Seems like TCU reinvented themselves a few times under Patterson as well but there does come a time but there certainly aren't any guarantees and with the onset of two SEC Schools in Texas, the emergence of UTSA and T tech out looking for a new coach those are some deep waters, landscape has changed. The job wouldn't be my top choice. TCU may be playing the remember when game like many Syracuse fans have been doing for almost 20 years

Agree with everything other than the "well spoken" part.
