I think Fran did the right thing. Why have a kid who really doesn't want to be here? Plus it sounds like Fran, the ole Miss coach and Smith talked it out. As to compensation, reading between the lines it sounds like we got $$$. This line is somewhat telling "If a guy wants to leave then there’s certain things that have to happen.” Better than having a disgruntled player and we don't get any comp.

I'm of the opposite view. It leaves SU as an easy target if another school wants to come after our players because we'll just roll over.

That's a good point and I won't argue. Won't be that hard for SEC and Big 10 schools to outbid us.

So my theory on this is that there was never a competition only coach speak. They knew Collins wasn’t the answer and Brought in Angeli. It was never close but publicly speaking and to have a capable backup they want to say it was close. Now this all blew up and the initial evaluation was terrible, but I think they knew pretty quick Collins wasn’t going to work which is why Angeli was brought in.

It doesn’t excuse the initial evaluation though, red flags all over him at LSU but if I recall we missed on our top targets

Its not cut and dry. I'm sure there are situations where we say no we don't want to do this. You signed a contract lets do this. But every situation is different.

Where is this player at mentally with the situation? why is he leaving? How happy are we with him at this moment? Will it be a good situation and is the relationship salvageable at this point? Will he turn others negative? How long has this player been with us? In this case he had just signed. How much do we want this player? How positive are we that this player will be productive? Smith hasn't produced all that much yet. How easily can we replace him with someone else? How much would it cost to replace him? We likely don't let them go for nothing. How much can we get from the new school?

I think this situation would be the same for any school and I doubt its unique to us.
