Tennessee Postgame

It's water under the bridge now but I can't figure out why on the last play of the game, Starling was our free safety guarding the rim as opposed to Kyle.
I didnt understand that either. Kyle should have been back and try to make a play on the ball.

Couple of random thoughts after watching the second half this morning.

I knew we were going to win once JJ hit that behind the backboard shot to start off the second half! But seriously he played great down the stretch. He does best when he doesn't have to think. Like Tom Cruise said, don't think just do lol.

With about 4 minutes left, Sadiq made a strong move to the goal. You could see Freeman jump up off of the bench and you could see he was very gimpy on that foot. I don't think we'll be seeing him for a while.

Kyle is so darn good. Even his foul shot looked less hideous. But seriously that was a huge shot he hit to give us the lead.

George has to be better. Simple

Kingz played a great first half and did some solid things off the ball in the second half. Tennessee clearly clamped down on him in the second half.

Sadiq continues to improve. Huge upside. I like how he can finish with both hands.

Kiyan didn't try to hero ball yesterday which was great.

Soure really hurts us when he's in there.

Betsey got less run that I was expecting. Probably related to defense.

That last play of the game was angina producing lol

Nah, don’t tell me how to feel. I loved the win just didn’t like the court storm.
I guess any top 25 game Cuse wins now they rush the court? Or how about any win, don’t gatekeep, right?
They rushed the court on a team that already had a loss, was ranked 13th and program that has never been to a final 4. Didn’t think this was warranted.
Sure why not. They’re having fun. Don’t worry the girls in math class will still think you’re cool even if you don’t rain on the parade

Can someone please explain to me what the problem is with George? Wasn't he the highest rated transfer we got? I know this has been the line since Ennis but if this team had a true point guard...

ESPN is the absolute worst with that. They pipe down the crowd noise so it sounds much quieter than it is. They do this for all sports and I can’t figure out why
It's a great question and it all gets down to every game on ESPN (all sports) is simply an ad to remind fans to watch the next NFL/MNF, NBA, College Football Playoff/SEC on ABC. That is where ESPN makes its money. It's bell cow. And all these other events exist to simply feed those signature events/games. And over the course of 15-20 years, people resent it.

George is still playing great defense. He’s also facing defenses that defend the pass and off the ball exceptionally well. I expect him to settle in more and more and then be a beast when we get into conference play.

Playing our current defensive style and where the game gets chaotic can be tough on a pick and roll PG like Nait. Rhythm and familiarity are important and it takes time. Not to mention missing a key part of the team he’s been practicing with in the pre season.

With all that said his BPR is second to Kingz in the games without Donnie. I expect Nait to really round into form now and continue to build chemistry to get a feel where guys like to be and to find where it seek his shot. Again given we will be familiar with the rest of the P4 opponents and that no defense will be as good as those over the past 4 games besides maybe Duke, the offense will have a much better opportunity to improve even before Donnie is ready.

Agree with you. I thought he would be a lot better. I imagine he is still getting acclimated but it's taking longer than anticipated. The thing that annoys me the most is he's not producing on fast breaks. Need a lot more easy buckets in transition.

I wouldn’t worry too much about George. He’s slumping a bit right now. Probably combo of adjusting to new teammates and system, and rigorous competition the last 4 games.

If you look at his game log from last year there were games he put up poor numbers, but many more games he put up great numbers. His performance will improve.

Cool. That has nothing to do with the production quality of college basketball games. Those guys take incredible pride in producing a high quality broadcast.

I agree that they’ve been mixing the crowd noise down for several years now. I don’t care for it.

Part of it is the way we run our pick and roll. Our screeners (usually Kyle) rarely roll hard and mostly drift into open space in the midrange on the short roll. I think the logic is that it gives us better spacing—we always have someone in the weak side dunker, so if we have a driving guard, rolling big, and lurking 2nd big, the lane is really clogged.

The problem is that Kyle is pretty bad at catching the ball in space and making a play, which means the action just kind of dies when he gets the pocket pass. George is too slow to pressure the rim on his own, so he needs a real roll to engage the drop defender and create cleaner finishing angles. Since George isn’t doing very much out of the pnr (where his pull-up shooting and passing should be most valuable), he’s taking lots of shots out of isos, which he’s bad at.

I think when Donnie gets back, we’ll go back to 4 out spacing more often, which should make it easier for George.

Also, there is no way they rebounded the missed FT and call TO in .3 seconds or whatever it was.
I am guessing Tennessee told the refs that if they get the rebound, they want a timeout. By rule, a minimum of .3 must come off the clock if the ball becomes live. That's why it adjusted from 0.5 to 0.4 (which caught Dennis Scott by surprise).

Dennis Scott seemed to struggle with the rule book all night. He referenced a clear path foul (NBA rule) and thought that George should have been called for a travel when he caught his own shot (you can catch your own shot if officials determine it was a legitimate attempt at the basket).

Whoa! I didn’t know that second one. Very interesting.

Well, that felt good after a good long while.

The defense is going to win them some games. The offense is going to lose them some games.

The defense is giving them every chance to win most nights and the offense just has to spike it enough times.

There is talent and capability on offense and they can keep getting better on that end just have to keep bringing it on D.

One thing I want to see more of is that post feed to Kyle and let him use his footwork to get some buckets in the paint especially given the upcoming schedule. Kyle is playing like an all ACC first or second team and should be in the defensive DPOY race hands down.

Who cares though. The kids that are in school right now, have they ever been to the NCAA tournament? They aren't like us. We have seen tons of great wins. They haven't. And they are kids. I didn't and won't give it a second thought.

The "we should be above court storming" people and the "we should worry about redshirts" people should join a bowling league together.

They're trapped in a different time.

Sorry, I did not finish my point. ESPN squashes the ambient/crowd noise so that we can hear their announcers clearly (almost as if they are in a studio), and about 60% of the time they are talking about another game or sport. And it takes away from the viewing experience of THAT game. Last night's crowd sounded subdued and from everything I've gathered, it was a solid-to-strong showing on our fans' part.
