kyle needs to get the ball and they need to play the pnr aggressively...they play it so softlyPart of it is the way we run our pick and roll. Our screeners (usually Kyle) rarely roll hard and mostly drift into open space in the midrange on the short roll. I think the logic is that it gives us better spacing—we always have someone in the weak side dunker, so if we have a driving guard, rolling big, and lurking 2nd big, the lane is really clogged.
The problem is that Kyle is pretty bad at catching the ball in space and making a play, which means the action just kind of dies when he gets the pocket pass. George is too slow to pressure the rim on his own, so he needs a real roll to engage the drop defender and create cleaner finishing angles. Since George isn’t doing very much out of the pnr (where his pull-up shooting and passing should be most valuable), he’s taking lots of shots out of isos, which he’s bad at.
I think when Donnie gets back, we’ll go back to 4 out spacing more often, which should make it easier for George.
Eh I don’t buy this, just looking at individual % doesn’t tell the whole story. White and JJ were both 1 of 2 from the line. Kyle was 4/10. Kings was good at 5/6 and kiyan was 2/2. Kyle had double the amount of missed free throws as the rest of the team combinedWhite and Starling both were at 50% and Kyle 40%. It was a team effort in mediocrity.
He was shmoooove!I just rewatched the highlights and you just can’t overstate how clutch JJ was down the stretch. We were down one with under three minutes left and Red’s coaching career was flashing before his eyes. Starling then scored five points on consecutive beautiful jumpers (bro just do that at the free throw line) which won us the game.
Oh I do that too. There is a membership fee if you want access. You just missed the free trial unfortunatelyI would have thought you were tracking your database of acceptable and unacceptable court stormings.![]()
kenpom rankings dont make a lotta sense to me.I just rewatched the 2nd half. Defense was outstanding to say the least. Kingz and JJ and of course Kyle were outstanding. White and George not too shabby either. I haven’t seen a Syracuse team play defense like this in . . . Well forever. Ament was a top 5 recruit and White outplayed him. 5 games coming up where we will be heavily favored which takes us to the home game against Clemson in which ESPN has us as underdogs. Not sure why.
Below is on the kenpom site. \kenpom rankings dont make a lotta sense to me.
i guess that iowa state blowout really hurt. and the close game with monmouth.
but i think a team that beats tenn and goes to overtime w houston...while also staying relatively close with kansas should be higher than 63rd
its clear to me that SU has a legit chance no matter who they play and I dont think you can say for 63 teams in NCABB
okNah, don’t tell me how to feel. I loved the win just didn’t like the court storm.
I guess any top 25 game Cuse wins now they rush the court? Or how about any win, don’t gatekeep, right?
They rushed the court on a team that already had a loss, was ranked 13th and program that has never been to a final 4. Didn’t think this was warranted.
Red and JJ take a lot of heat here, often deserved.I just rewatched the 2nd half. Defense was outstanding to say the least. Kingz and JJ and of course Kyle were outstanding. I did not watch the game on TV, listened to the radio broadcast with Matt Park and Jim Satalin. The crowd noise came across on the radio, it almost sounded like the halycon days. The sound engineer needs to be replaced. It’s the 3rd game this season where the sound was awful.
after 27 games???Below is on the kenpom site. \
Also The offense is also over 100. Once we get through this next stretch of cupcakes and play some middle of the pack ACC teams our offense will be rated higher. 4 top 15 defenses without Donnie. We're prob lucky our O rating isn't lower
When is the influence of preseason ratings removed from the system?
The weight of the preseason ratings decreases through the season, going to zero after a team's 27th D-I game. The proper weighting has been determined from historical testing - designed so that there's no bias in terms of the preseason rating holding a team back or propping it up during the season.
It’s weighted.after 27 games???
wow they need to update that to the NIL era...new rosters every season makes that number way too high
agree on this - also Gillespie made life miserable for Nate George. I don't want to excuse his play because it wasn't great. But that was part of it.Red and JJ take a lot of heat here, often deserved.
But the coaching decision to put JJ on Ament, and Kingz on Gillespie was a great move by Red, and perfectly executed by both players. Ament was used to getting open looks from three or driving to the hoop vs bigger players, averaging 17 a game . JJ took all that away, holding him to 2-10 from the floor.
Gillespie was unstoppable versus Rutgers, scoring 21 in the first half, Kingz turned him into a complete non-factor.
Agree. I think George just needs a reset. He’s been drawing some guards that play serious defense.agree on this - also Gillespie made life miserable for Nate George. I don't want to excuse his play because it wasn't great. But that was part of it.

So many teams play traditional "deny penetration of the middle", so they may sit a foot or two back to stop getting beat. The more aggressive teams attack the ball handler, make him make a decision, force him to attack, pass or turn it over. It puts a lot of responsibility on the off-ball defenders to stay disciplined, the reward are the turnovers. Watching the games tonight, the latter is us now. It drove me crazy last year watching players go under screens and get beat, go over the screens, get beat. Watching the way these guys switch, hedge and attack the ball handler. Majority of teams are not comfortable with this, especially star players that are used to sizing up the defender and doing 4 one-on-one moves.Maybe someone has commented on this. Maybe I have. On my 3rd beer. But it seems like many new guys on the team (not KA) have an exceptional combination of lateral quickness and length.
It’s an irritating, annoying, pesky defense. They don’t play defense like they are fatigued, an excuse I have seen bandied about as an excuse by some for losses. SU should have one loss.
I think with the cupcakes coming now we can focus more on getting the offense tighter and establishing true roles. Last four games were fights and you needed to find/use your Dawgs. You need more offense to compete at your historic standards. I don’t think Donnie will help too much. I’d love to be wrong. At least beat Duke at the CARRIER DOME if you are scheduled. PLEASE.
Do me a solid and sweep them if so scheduled.
Kid got literally baptized on the stage, a lot of good things, but clearly things to get right. However, seven games in, he's more battle tested then all season at GT. I think he processes it, seems sharp, gonna see what he does.Agree. I think George just needs a reset. He’s been drawing some guards that play serious defense.
He’ll get that against these cupcakes coming up.
I'd really like to see him tighten up his handle; it works.. but it's not efficient at all. There were at least 4 if not 5 assists lost to a missed open shot last night as well. Re watching the game Nait again has to get better but if guys finish off some great looks he’s got 7-8 assists last night.
Not sure what the problem is, but I am curious why we start our half court offense literally right below the half court logo. Too often George has the ball way out there and everyone else is at the 3 point circle or close to the basket. This is great if you have a speedy point guard who can blow by anyone, but George ain’t that. So what does he set up out there over and over? If Kyle sets a screen and rolls.. he gets the ball at the top of the key where he can’t do anything with it. I don’t understand. Can someone please explain to me what the problem is with George? Wasn't he the highest rated transfer we got? I know this has been the line since Ennis but if this team had a true point guard...
