Thamel: 12 Mid-Major Coaches on the Rise

They'll be good coaches available whenever it happens. If it happens.
where?? on staff like the last time??

doc holliday for me too.

put brohm in the mix.

fuente is likely going to a bigger program.

This is the year to make the switch; stocked with great coaches looking to move up, and many with offense side pedigrees to boot... Keep Daoust as DC...

Every year there are hot names.

Last time was funked because Marrone left at an awful time. No one was left.

Next head coach to me should be a coach with HC experience, should have an offensive background with a proven college system that has demonstrated success running that system, have ties to our traditional recruiting areas or ties where we can recruit being in the ACC and also have demonstrated the ability to do more with less. A coach that can coach em up so to speak. I like Dino Babers a lot.

If smart, coach could also retain Daoust as the DC if they want to maintain some continuity if need be but could also be a HC/OC if they perform that role currently and spend money on an established DC. Just my 2 cents

Shafer gets to 5-7 that earns 4th year IMO, anything less why prolong the inevitable.

That's Phil Montgomery or Bryan Harsin, except for ties to existing recruiting areas.

A nationwide search will be conducted and Coyle will hire someone -- like our new compliance director -- with ties to Boise St.

And don't forget our new Deputy Athletics Director for Administration - also from Boise St.

Heard they just hired a few custodians to work at Manley who toiled at Boise St.

here's a mildly interesting reverse question:

lets say all those coaches jump for greener pastures, and Cuse is one of those jobs. how many of those schools would hire HCSMFS as a replacement? how many would he make the short list of?

I worry that ties to our traditional recruiting areas and proven offensive college system are mutually exclusive.

If you go with a traditional northeast recruiter, we will watch a meathead offense

They spent the money to get better facilities, I think if you have to make a trade off, go with the system

Why does Thamel have an ax to grind with SU? Seems to me he is always trying to stir up controversy. At least Schein is very supportive as are the other alums in sports broadcasting.

I would roll the dice there, I would be happy with a coach that has been a HC, can coach up and has a proven track record of running a successful offense that doesn't have a bunch of NFL talent. Plenty of options from the list indicated and a few others. A guy that would look at the dome and really think that an indoor facility should be lit up like a Christmas tree 7 games a year and not worry about the 1 game a year where weather may be an issue. Offense gets established quickly, defense follows or at least an adequate one a a year or two.

Again, I think Shafer should get a year to see what he can do with the kiddie corps, but if you are making a change, there is one system above all others that has proven to work at a small private school with a guy who is now a HC making $700K a year.

Bring the Baylor offense to SU, it would be a great counter punch to the all defense no offense ACC.

I want to see Shafer continue and succeed. An article on ACC Football Rx wants Matt Campbell to be the next coach.

http://accfootballrx.blogspot.com/2015/10/guest-article-coaching-carousel.html

"Syracuse Old -Scott Shaffer
New -Matt Campbell

Syracuse needs a program builder with a vision if they can't get a big splash head coach. They need to VASTLY improve their recruiting. Fans talk about how Shaffer has already improved recruiting, and he has, all the way up to... still last in the Atlantic division last year. Shaffer is a solid old school hard nose coach. A very likable guy. But Syracuse has to have a young fireball to close the deal with families in New Jersey, not just on the practice field. Why? Campbell has some wins under his belt he can point to and build upon. "We can do this BUT bigger". Whoever takes the job has an uphill climb. Clemson, FSU, UofL, and NCState have better talent in the division, BC, and Pitt have better coaches. Its a long way up for Cuse. A coach who can make something out of nothing is a good first step."
another jackass that can't spell Shafer's name right but has no problem criticizing the man.

Or Dino at BG.

Brohm is an interesting prospect to. Played and coached at LVille.

Holiday is 58 years old and his OC is old to.

Fuentes makes 1.4 at memphis. 4 years. 4-8, 3-9, 10-3, 6-0.

one thing that should be looked at with all these guys are their staffs. Cause you know there all going to bring in their own guys.

I'm sure most realize that our last 3 HC hires had zero HC experience but I wonder if everyone knows that SU has never hired a HC with prior D1 HC experience.

Check out Campbell's staff. OC is Jason Candle. Besides the decent offensive production (446 yds/game), he was named one of the top recruiters in the national in 2010 by rivals, and the MAC recruiter of the year 2011, 2012.

I'd like to see someone with HC experience replace Shafer after the season. I'd look at:
Matt Campbell
Matt Rhule
Dino Babers
Doc Holliday

Seems we are always trying to catch lightening in a bottle...which has only happened twice in out history (Mac & Schwartzwalder). Not sure why in a hundred years of football that they think it would happen again, seems like the definition of insanity.

Climate has also changed tremendously since both of those guys were hired. It's a totally different ball game now.

People here want to hire a coach from Temple with the 104th ranked offense in the country? up from 120th last year

Yeahhh NO

we've seen temple coaches that northeastern JV coaches get hot and bothered for go to real conferences and we see their offenses

We have a couple of things working in our favor that weren't in place before.

P5 conference status
Updated facilities
ACC revenue

Those things will hopefully make us a more attractive prospective employer should we choose to move on from Shafer. If we do, then the last factor is going to be very important. If we want to make a cheap, unproven hire--sure it might work out, but we can probably expect more of the same when it comes to on-field results if we don't knock it out of the park with who we select. The days of paying "hometown" discount compensation need to come to an end. You get what you pay for. Fortunately, we aren't nearly as cash strapped as we were 5, 10 years ago. We're going to need to open up the checkbook to bring in a high caliber candidate and pay for quality ACs. I think we're in a position to do that now, whereas we weren't even just a few short years ago.

Of course, none of this would be necessary if Shafer / Lester right a listing ship that is taking on water. I'm pulling for them, but games like Saturday make it increasingly difficult.

How about Everett Withers? defensive guy, worked with meyer, HC at James madison, offense is torching FBS. they run all the time, they have vad lee now, but their passing offense is efficient.

not banging the drum for him, it's just a name of a guy who is succeeding as a HC that isn't in texas
