Willie Fritz all the way and he'd probably jump at the chance to coach a P5 team.
That's because the authors of these lists understand how college football works, and aren't delusional enough to think Syracuse is the kind of program that can hire a Jim Tressell, or anyone who is already a H.C. in a P5 conference. We are a stepping stone program. We will always hire from within, or a H.C. from a non P5, or an up and coming assistant. We aren't throwing out millions to bring in a "Name"I think it's hilarious that people (not saying you, Whitey, this and other lists just makes me think of this) were grumbling about not hiring any more MAC level coaches...and now every list every poster puts out is riddled with guys like Matt Campbell, Dino Babers, Matt Rhule, etc.
Why not retain /Shafer as D.C? He probably wouldn't get many H.C. looks. He seemed to be a hell of a D.C. with Marrone.Next head coach to me should be a coach with HC experience, should have an offensive background with a proven college system that has demonstrated success running that system, have ties to our traditional recruiting areas or ties where we can recruit being in the ACC and also have demonstrated the ability to do more with less. A coach that can coach em up so to speak. I like Dino Babers a lot.
If smart, coach could also retain Daoust as the DC if they want to maintain some continuity if need be but could also be a HC/OC if they perform that role currently and spend money on an established DC. Just my 2 cents
Shafer gets to 5-7 that earns 4th year IMO, anything less why prolong the inevitable.
The best fit on that list would be Matt Campbell. If something were to happen, hopefully they would give him a call. Other than him, I don't see many guys that would want this job or fit what Syracuse is all about. We learned under Gerg that the wrong fit could end up being a disaster and if something happened this year, the timing of the hire is crucial for us to keep growing in our new conference. Oh and let's get someone who sees Syracuse as a destination job too!
The only problem I have with Holliday he's coming from Marshall which has zero academic standards. I agree with him being a good coach and a good recruiter but it's going to be different getting the kids he got at WVU and Marshall to come to Syracuse let alone get into Syracuse. The other thing we need to take into account is that we are going to be on year 2 of a 5 year probation period. I know it doesn't mean much but that will mean that the NCAA will have their eye on the program and who knows if that would play a role into a coaches decision. I think Dino Babers will be the first choice for Illinois but who knows what will shake down over the next 6 weeks.I don't think the SU powers would approve him. This isn't just Coyle's decision. I think from SU's standpoint Holliday or Babers would be the ideal candidate. SU wants to hire a guy they think will be here long term. It is silly because that doesn't happen anymore anywhere. But that will be SU's mindset. Those two guys are older and a lot less likely to leave. In this case they are just as good as Campbell, who I really like. Holliday hits Eastern ties, recruiting, offense, and age. He is the safe hire.
here's a mildly interesting reverse question:
lets say all those coaches jump for greener pastures, and Cuse is one of those jobs. how many of those schools would hire HCSMFS as a replacement? how many would he make the short list of?
