Thamel article on coach hot seat & others

Jeff Stoutland
Matt Patricia
After Greg Robinson I don't want another assistant coach whose success has occurred mainly in the NFL.
I am a Pats fan and wouldn't want Patricia. Belichick does runs that D and it hasn't been great since the veterans retired around 2008. Stoutland is an OL coach right? I would want a college offensive guy if we struggle this year.

I am about 99.9% sure Thamel doesn't have any Syracuse connections anymore.

He's the Hans Schultz of reporters RE: Syracuse.
Unless something has happened recently I don't know if this true. Thamel broke the story we were going to ACC. He broke it the Friday night before it became official the next day. Now with an AD change he could have lost access that he had with Gross. I don't know if he did anything to tick off the next administration.

In terms of hiring and firing football coaches, I'm pretty sure the media relations staff doesn't know squat. Especially about speculating about a could-be coach that isn't likely to happen. Thamel is probably friendly with Edson & staff, since he has worked with them as a student and throughout his career.

Also worth noting that Gross had loose lips so I'm sure he had something to do with tipping the media off about the ACC move. Coyle and Syverud have already shown to be under the radar type guys.

I don't think 7 wins is the bar either. I don't even know if 6 is. This is a very young team so the bar could be clear improvement from last year. Fewer penalties, decent offense, respectable special teams. Thamel doesn't know because Coyle probably doesn't even know

That's more the point. But even if Coyle did know, I'm pretty sure Thamel wouldn't have a clue who was on his short list in August before the season.

If Edsall didn't want to leave UConn for Syracuse back in 2009, I can't see him leaving Under Armour Maryland.
You're probably right. But there's probably not one coach out there that has the ties to this place like he does. If I was Coyle and we needed a new HC, he would be the first one I'd call because of where the program would be if we needed a new HC and because he would be the perfect fit for that scenario. You say it's unlikely which it probably is, but it would probably be the last shot he'd have of being the head coach at his alma mater. You never know how that would factor into a decision like that.

it would be great if people would stop firing Shafer and finding a replacement before the first game is played this year.
barring a 3 win season i am in the camp of extending shafer and paying the assistants more $$$$. improvement in recruiting is my primary reason, as well as showing recruits coaching consistency. offensive improvement is a must, as well as the daring to replace poor performers with other players. i believe that we are a a 4-8 team right now but trending upward in recruits. i would like to see shafer get a shot in using them

Patricia was an offensive coach his entire career until Belicheck moved him to defense.

He can coach all aspects of the game.

He is a local guy and from all accounts is a very, very bright man - super smart.

Stoutland knows the program - was the SU recruiting coordinator - was the Alabama Assistant HC and has been getting rave reviews for his work with Chip Kelly's OL.

Lately Thamel seems to torch his alma mater as often as possible.
i'd guess that 90% of posters here think that shafer is on the hot seat (not that 90% think he deserves to be)

why is thamel getting criticized for having the same opinion

Patricia is an RPI guy. Not sure he's the right selection for the long term ala Bill O'Brien but he is a very smart cat and certainly a guy who should be looked into either way. I still think Schiano has to be investigated too if he's unemployed.

I think Thamel is getting the news out there that SU has to go to a bowl or Shafer is going to be gone. Not sure why this is surprising or angering to anyone.

Who they would hire is anyone's guess. My guess is the new AD will canvass candidates locally, nationally etc and see what works for the Syracuse market, etc.

Why?

Why would he? I'm positive he wouldn't but why does anyone think Edsall would get more than an interview to appease SU alumni? He's going to hire someone at the forefront of the college game, an up and coming offensive mind or just as likely someone coaching Div 2.

i dont think one can go wrong hiring out of the BB coaching tree, but you would need to make sure he wanted to be in college and that the school would pay enough for assistants or it will be grobbycakes part 2.

and edsall is yesterdays news.

if coyle makes a hire, i look for it to be a hot offensive mind in the mold of where he came from.

Well, you can go wrong, but it's still a generally good way to go... ;)
