Thamel: Coaching Carousel

Bottom Tier

Syracuse

Status: 65% chance of opening

Breakdown: Scott Shafer bragging about the Orange's 3-0 record seems like ages ago, as there's a good chance that the Orange finish 3-9 for the second straight year. Shafer has done a good job infusing some young talent into the program, as freshman quarterback Eric Dungey and freshman tailback Jordan Fredericks are tantalizing talents. New athletic director Mark Coyle needs to determine if Shafer is the right long-term answer. The Orange will be heavy underdogs the next four weeks—at Florida State, at Louisville, Clemson and at N.C. State. They close with Boston College at home, and it would be a surprise if the Orange weren't 3-8 headed into that game. Syracuse will have to go outside the box. One name to keep an eye on is Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost, who Coyle liked a lot when hiring Bryan Harsin at Boise in 2013. Running an up-tempo offense in the Carrier Dome would make sense and give the Orange an identity it has lacked since the Donovan McNabb era. Frost has been selective about jobs, but now that Nebraska is filled he may be more amendable to moving. Still, Syracuse has little recruiting base and poor resources compared to its league peers and little recent history of success.

Names: Scott Frost, Teryl Austin, Mario Cristobal, Bo Pelini, Joe Moorhead, Dave Warner, Ryan Day, Joe Moglia, Chris Ash, Ed Warinner and D.J. Durkin.

Bottom Tier (Cuse was the lowest in the bottom tier)
Just to clarify: you do realize they're in alphabetical order within the tier, right?

Dave Warner. Hmmm...

If it came to replacing Shafer, I can see him as a strong candidate. Would be funny if Austin got hired.

Next coach has to be offensive minded with a system that doesnt change while said coach is here.

Joe Moglia is the Ameritrade guy right? That would be an atrocious hire.

I ask b/c i don't know but would someone like Tim Green ever want to get involved w the program on the coaching side? He seems to be smart, outspoken, etc. I recall him speaking before Marrone got introduced too. I would think he's a guy you would want a part of the program.

That article KILLS pat haden. I gotta think he's gone shortly. Maybe Gross does get his dream job there.

I was thinking Frost would be the perfect coach for Syracuse, him and Dungey share a simular playing style. Young coach and he can open the field up.

Dr. Gross was close to Thamel. Thamel had the ACC news before anybody because of Gross. I don't know if he is as close to Coyle but Thamel is an SU alum.

If we are 65% likely to make a coaching change my faith in Coyle would be a lot stronger than it is now and it is high right now. Warner or Frost look like the best of those names.

Austin is going to get an NFL HC job soon. The rest of those names do nothing for me. Pelini had his shot in 2004 and we stupidly went elsewhere.

teryl austin?

that is so out there that I'm scared i believe it

thamel, you are so weird. who even remembers shafer "bragging about 3-0". that's what you lead off with?

Are you serious? I remember it adamantly. He mentioned it in the press, it was all over social media etc. "First time in 24 years..." type stuff

Syracuse fans remember that. No one else does. That article is not in the DO.

Syracuse Football registers ZERO national pulse. We all know that. So why would Thamel be referring to anything but SU fans?

Is it bad that I have never heard of 50% of those names?

I don't see Mario Cristobal coming to Syracuse. Scott Frost is interesting. Bo Pelini is another Ohio meathead coach. Teryl Austin went to Pitt so that's a red mark on the ledger. The others look like random generated names from EA NCAA Football.

Exactly. Why bring up something that only Syracuse fans can reference when speaking to a national audience?

that's why it's so weird to lead off with something so random when 99% of the people reading the article aren't su fans

i didn't go to newhouse though so what do i know

I think this list is pretty much nonsense. If certain of these names are really hireable, HCSS will be on a very short leash. Would be hard to fault Coyle if he hired Frost or Warner for example. OttoinGrotto would be in seventh heaven with Scott.
I suppose the magic question to which none of use know the answer to is who can Coyle really hire?

Honestly I don't believe that 65% SS is gone remark based on the board insiders who are close to the program.

I hope this staff is on notice. If SS needs another win to keep this job my trust for Coyle will be close to 100%.

Thamel was tight with Gross. I highly doubt he is tight with Coyle.
