Thamel: Coaching Carousel

I think this list is pretty much nonsense. If certain of these names are really hireable, HCSS will be on a very short leash. Would be hard to fault Coyle if he hired Frost or Warner for example. OttoinGrotto would be in seventh heaven with Scott.
I suppose the magic question to which none of use know the answer to is who can Coyle really hire?

Funny, i was thinking the same thing. If the feelers are out, and any of these guys had genuine interest, then I am sorry, but HCSS should be sweating if he gets waxed at FSU and home to Clempsin

Joe Moglia is the Ameritrade guy right? That would be an atrocious hire.

I ask b/c i don't know but would someone like Tim Green ever want to get involved w the program on the coaching side? He seems to be smart, outspoken, etc. I recall him speaking before Marrone got introduced too. I would think he's a guy you would want a part of the program.

That article KILLS pat haden. I gotta think he's gone shortly. Maybe Gross does get his dream job there.
You hire him (Tim Green) just think of the fun having an injury claims lawyer coaching the son of an injury claims lawyer.

Frost is an interesting name I haven't thought about. Makes sense because he did interview for the Boise opening. Negatives he has no head coaching experience. Positives he is an offensive minded head coach.

I would like to get a guy who has head coaching experience if we do make a change. If we went the coordinator route Dave Warner would be a solid hire. I like Frost's offense but it's been average at best since Mariota left and he has no east coast ties. We need a guy that can recruit PA, NJ, FL and those areas that made us so good before.

Which job(s) would you take if you were a coach with options?

Is it bad that I have never heard of 50% of those names?

I don't see Mario Cristobal coming to Syracuse. Scott Frost is interesting. Bo Pelini is another Ohio meathead coach. Teryl Austin went to Pitt so that's a red mark on the ledger. The others look like random generated names from EA NCAA Football.
Add Warner to the interesting list.

I wouldn't want Tim green involved in the program. Not a fan.

It's an interesting question. Lots of fans (not necessarily the majority) want a new coach at SU. However the current coach hasn't even finished his 3rd season which may sour many of the better coaches' impressions of Syracuse as a destination that would not allow them the time to fully implement their system/get their kids.

Now that there may be smoke I'm a little worried that we may find the grass isn't greener if we don't get someone that meets our expectations.

Agree, needed to cheat at the high school level. Played against Skaneateles a couple times..

A key issue is who would be interested in the job. The three year thing is an issue but somewhat mitigated with a new AD. Coyle needs to be darn sure he can get someone a lot better than Shafer. Otherwise he will be generate a lot of bad feelings. He really needs to let it play out for 2016. After that nobody can blame him.

Frost scares me a bit. Oregon doesn't even need to recruit. How many times have you seen a recruit have a random interest in Oregon before? A lot. Would rather have a dynamic head coach from a little sisters conference.

Dave Warner is awfully intriguing. Coyle and Syverud seem to be pretty stealthy guys, though. I'd expect that to continue, and if HCSS goes I feel like we'll be pleasantly surprised.

Jeff Brohm. (But it doesnt matter because Shafer isnt going anywhere this year)

What happened, did Green, Marrone, and Norley throw you over the rail at Maggies?

Or do you just resent guys who do well for themselves?

And Tim is not qualified to coach here, not that I think he would ever be interested.

Btw, I wasn't insinuating that Green be the HC but I wonder if he'd want to get involved in the program more. He was front and center when Marrone was hired.

I also think guys like Konrad should get involved too if they wanted to pivot into coaching. He's another smart guy who would be an additive for the program. Again, he makes good money in Florida but I wonder.

That was my entire point on Green.

Dave Warner? He's 55 and a life time position coach, he's been co-coordinator at MSU for the last three years. Nothing against him, but other than being an SU alum that's big pile of blah to me.

Unless he's bringing Dantonio with him, I would hope we could do better.

What have I ever said about Todd Norley? Right. Nothing. I went to Syracuse long before those 3 arrived. Marrone is a a-hole. Green, from what I have been told by people that know him that I trust, don't think highly of him. As for being resentful of people who do well for themselves, you don't know me. I have done very well for myself. I ran the investment sales division of one of the largest financial institutions in the country. I just don't like . Or the sycophants that worship the ground those walk on.

I'm not sure Tim is actually interested in working for a living.

There are plenty of good coaches out there. We have some of them here now. We hired Rob Moore. Want him back?

That's pretty much all we've ever hired.

It's a profession where being an a-hole is part of the job description. Who cares if he's a jerk, he wasn't hired to be your buddy, he was hired to do a ridiculously hard job. And part of that involves hurting feelings and making people uncomfortable.

Based upon what people who were really plugged in by the time he left he was completely disillusioned and disheartened by the working conditions and lack of support.

Here are some quotes, "I think the last straw with Marrone was when we lost two recruits to Rutgers strictly because they felt that the school had far superior facilities and was more committed to competing at the highest level of BCS football. I really think that was a tough one to get over for him - as a proud SU Football alum who lived through some of the glory days and takes great pride in SU Football history."

And this from a close observer,

"His wife has been confronted in public places, his son has been harassed at school, he has had to deal with the school (not the NCAA) screwing John Raymon (who cried like a baby in his arms), he has had to deal with supposedly loyal fans calling in to radio shows and telling him SU fans feel like Charlie Brown and that he's Lucy always pulling the ball away when they approach (a reference to approaching the corner but never turning it, I suppose), he has had to deal with intrusive letters from BOT members offering him coaching advice and believing every erroneous character-questioning report in the paper (the Spruill situation and his handling of it being the most recent) or post on the internet . . .

He has told me on more than one occasion that this is now a basketball school that could care less about football. He told me he can handle the fans disagreeing with his strategy on the field, but when it comes to questioning his character and confronting his wife and kids are way over the line and something totally unexpected when he took his dream job, which in many ways has turned out to be a nightmare.

He inherited a total system collapse and is 25-25 with two bowl wins after four seasons, and you still see assclowns out there slinging their crap on the board, and the paper website is 100 times worse.

All that points to leaving. Loyalty to his coaches and players is big with him, though. Notice I didn't say his school, because I believe he has been soured big-time there."

It's too bad he left after four years, but given the lack of support and failure of Gross and the administration to meet the commitments they made it wasn't surprising.
