Thamel: Coaching Carousel

That's pretty much all we've ever hired.
Maloney, Coach Mac, had been a head coach at UMass, P, G-rob, Marrone, and SS. You are correct, sir

It's a profession where being an a-hole is part of the job description. Who cares if he's a jerk, he wasn't hired to be your buddy, he was hired to do a ridiculously hard job. And part of that involves hurting feelings and making people uncomfortable.

Based upon what people who were really plugged in by the time he left he was completely disillusioned and disheartened by the working conditions and lack of support.

Here are some quotes, "I think the last straw with Marrone was when we lost two recruits to Rutgers strictly because they felt that the school had far superior facilities and was more committed to competing at the highest level of BCS football. I really think that was a tough one to get over for him - as a proud SU Football alum who lived through some of the glory days and takes great pride in SU Football history."

And this from a close observer,

"His wife has been confronted in public places, his son has been harassed at school, he has had to deal with the school (not the NCAA) screwing John Raymon (who cried like a baby in his arms), he has had to deal with supposedly loyal fans calling in to radio shows and telling him SU fans feel like Charlie Brown and that he's Lucy always pulling the ball away when they approach (a reference to approaching the corner but never turning it, I suppose), he has had to deal with intrusive letters from BOT members offering him coaching advice and believing every erroneous character-questioning report in the paper (the Spruill situation and his handling of it being the most recent) or post on the internet . . .

He has told me on more than one occasion that this is now a basketball school that could care less about football. He told me he can handle the fans disagreeing with his strategy on the field, but when it comes to questioning his character and confronting his wife and kids are way over the line and something totally unexpected when he took his dream job, which in many ways has turned out to be a nightmare.

He inherited a total system collapse and is 25-25 with two bowl wins after four seasons, and you still see assclowns out there slinging their crap on the board, and the paper website is 100 times worse.

All that points to leaving. Loyalty to his coaches and players is big with him, though. Notice I didn't say his school, because I believe he has been soured big-time there."

It's too bad he left after four years, but given the lack of support and failure of Gross and the administration to meet the commitments they made it wasn't surprising.
Why did he leave Buffalo. It seems that Marrone is very sensitive when it comes to him and his. But not to anyone else's. And I bet we could find all kinds of people that would have things to say about him in both places. He left because he could one of the best 32 jobs in the world if you coach football. I have no problem with that. Only with making him out to be something that he wasn't.

I think this point repeated by Thamel makes sense, and might help tilt the scales toward retaining Shafer:

"There are so many jobs destined to open, one administrator pointed out Sunday night that there could be a counter-intuitive impact on the market. Could a struggling school like Purdue or Iowa State end up waiting another year to fire their coach to avoid the chaos of a competitive market? That's where we are, as crazy as it sounds."

This off-season is looking like a sellers' market, with colleges buying (overpaying for?) what coaches are selling.

Great show

Come on.

Mac was a HC for six seasons and still four years younger,

Paul ran his own program for four years and was much more than just the LB coach for the four years before he took over and was 42 when he got the HC job,

As bad a disaster as Robinson was, he had 15 years of coordinator experience and was 53,

Marrone was 44 and on a lot of NFL short lists even with the limited coordinator experience when he was hired.

None of those guys were in their early fifties before they were partially given the reins on one side of the ball.

I get that he's had a series of NFL guys, but I don't think that alone is enough.

There is nothing interesting about that hire at all.

The last 3 had no HC experience and only 2 have ever had HC experience with neither of them at the D1 level.

Pretty one-sided view. All his short comings are OK but God forbid he gets called out for them. All the things he didn't like are present just about everywhere in CFB. Had he stayed he would have had his IPF and would have been in the ACC. Everything would have been better.

Talent and ability was not the issue - Marrone's was just too thin-skinned to survive as a head coach (at any level).

Who cares what people say, there's also plenty of people in the profession that seem to vouch for him. If he offended old guard, losing culture guys that got in the way of change and improvement, good for him.

If he thought Gross and Whaley were the problem and told them that, was he wrong?

If he was so loyal then why did he leave and not even talk to his players before he left. I remember the tweets from the players. They were pissed and shocked. He passed a load of crap about family and building something and he left under the cover of darkness.

That's right I forgot Shafer, he's been a coordinator at Stanford, Michigan, and SU for six seasons prior to being hired as HC in his 40's and he was a MAC coordinator before that.

Here's the point, Warner wasn't made CO-Coordinator until he was 52.

He's a lifetime QB coach, nothing wrong with that, he's seems to be excellent, but it's not the same as any of the prior guys had and he's much older than of those guys including Mac and Robinson.

Yup. Douche. Edsall-esque

If I'm not mistaken it was in the middle of break and just after the holidays. What exactly was he supposed to do, call them all individually or not take the job until he had a chance to gather them all up at Manley and break the news?

And again, what does that have to do with the job he did rebuilding the program?

I'm just curious on how anyone would want this douche back here.

I understand coaches move on and that is the way of life. But he came in here sprouting about crap fake meat and dream job. Well guess what we all bought it hook line and sink and he can make any excuse in the world. He made very good money working here and things like to you described comes with the territory. This isn't candy land where everyone is happy all the time. This is the real world and people tell others everyday what they think of you. If Doug is that thin skinned he needs to find a new profession where no one gets angry at him. Personally this is a pointless conversation because a he's never coming back here and b shafer is out coach now until he is ready to move on.

The two guys who hired him. Saint Doug has some personality issues that he can't control, which is why he is an O Line coach.

Pathetic, isn't it?
It's crazy. Every thread on this site has some post from go spouting off about how Marrone is some hero. Guess what if that's a hero then people need to reevaluate their definition of hero. The guy clearly cares only about himself. That is made clear by every pay check he deposits. He is loving the American Dream while selling a bill of goods that he hasn't remotely produced at any stop.

Technically, if you can read.... The posts are just as likely to start with saying Shafer should get another year because Marrone was a bad recruiter or that Shafer's 3 - 9 record last year wasn't that bad because of injuries and SOS and Marrone's 8 win season was pure luck.

So if you don't like Marrone, YAY!! for you. You've now posted 5 TIMES on one page about Marrone. It sounds like you bumped into him in the grocery store and he got sick of you following him around the store and told you to go pound salt. Who cares what you think of Marrone, he hasn't been the coach here for awhile.

I'm going with you didn't read the rest of the page. I could care less what Marrone does I just don't want him back here. But you're close, wasn't a store it was the airport as he ran to catch his plane out of town.

LOL, that is kind of funny.

I think there are 2 people on the whole board that might consider having DM back and I'm not even sure they are real people.

Joe Moorhead would be a great hire if Shafer goes, he can recruit and really knows how to manage a program with limitations.

ha I was thinking the same thing.
