If they hire either of those it would show a major financial investment into football has been made and the university is finally serious about winning. No way either of those guys come and allow to be crippled by a small staff budget and no nil. That’s why I’m rooting for them over ChesneyWe are looking to hire a new head coach. Candidates will need to be evaluated based on how good a head coach they would be. The head coach at a power 5 school is more of a CEO than a teacher or even a recruiter, (JB said the head coach is the 'closer' and that the assistants do most of the evaluation and recruitment). Their biggest job is to hire the right people to do that. If we need a good line coach, we don't hire a good line coach to be head coach. We need to hire a head coach who is going to hire a good line coach. If he's been a good line coach, his judgement on who to hire for that job might be better informed but we aren't hiring him to be the line coach.
Do we want an 'offensive guy' or a 'defensive guy'? We want a guy who is going to hire a good offensive guy and a good defensive guy to be his coordinators. An 'offensive guy' may want to meddle in the work of the offensive coordinator he hires. That may or may not be a good thing. A defensive guy might do the same. A defensive guy might actually want to hire the best offensive guy he can find and let him alone to do his job while he meddles in the work of the defensive guy. So getting an offensive guy as your head coach doesn't necessarily mean your offense is going to get better.
The best way to evaluate a candidate for the head coaching job would be to look at guys who have done that job before. Previous coaching experience in the Northeast would be a plus and so would previous coaching experience in other areas we want to recruit. You'd want someone who, by age, should have another decade or so to coach and, hopefully someone willing to be here for a while rather than using us as a stepping stone. A coach in his 50's would probably be good.
I think Dan Mullen or Al Golden would make the most sense here. But we've to got to be able to spend the money needed to get them plus the money needed to get them the staff they will need to do the job properly.
