Thamel: It’s GMac

Here’s my thing: REGARDLESS of who anyone wanted, Gerry deserves to be supported by us. Dude is a Syracuse legend, one of our own and had no part in our issues the last two years.

No argument from me to the should have gone outside the family people, but if he is the guy, the fanbase needs to collectively get behind him until there’s a reason not to.
Look after 12 bad years all anyone in their right mind wants Gerry to succeed. Especially when in a few years musical chairs are going to start again. And Syracuse has to be top 20 in both football and Basketball to get a seat at the big boys table.

Wildhack; "This is one of the most storied programs in college basketball, and we intend to hire a proven winner who will build on that legacy. We are looking for a coach who can recruit at the highest level, develop players and compete for championships, conference and national."

Congrats to Gerry. Needless to say, I hope he crushes this job and leads SU back to the elite levels we were at 15 years ago.

Meanwhile, the donor class is under the microscope. They better dig deep and fund a $12+ million compensation + NIL budget this off season. If I hear one person whine about our lack of resources this thing will be a catastrophe.

You hear a lot about coaches making it a priority to hire assistants that are fixtures in the grassroots scene. Like Book Richardson at Arizona, Young at UConn (sticking to NY for a reason) I wonder if it’s possible for GMac to hire Pat Massaroni at Stepinac, I know it’s not AAU but he’s run the best program in NY for a bit now and there’s always multiple high level D1 guys. I just wanna be considered for them.

I feel good for the fans that are excited for this.

I am not.

Very concerned that this shows us we've learned nothing. Having a new chancellor and a new AD is meaningless. Syracuse operates in a certain way and has certain expectations for basketball that has proven to be ineffective for a decade plus now, and we're committed to it

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Then the NIL reports have been way overblown. There’s no universe where Syracuse spends $10-12 million+ on a roster and does not have a ranked squad to start the season.
You do realize that was the average NIL budget in the ACC last year? And, the average will grow next year. It's a good start, but a $12 million NIL budget in 2026/2027 is not a competitive advantage in the ACC.

We painted ourselves in a corner and that’s over that same time period and were left with this being not the ideal but the only logical option. It’s also a pass fail for hoops as a whole. It could work out and we forget that it could have been disastrous or it essentially is the true end of Cuse hoops’ hope to be a power. Hopefully it’s a winning gamble but no matter how people feel about it - it is a gamble.

I think the short term advantage of GMac is that he could cause a solid attendance boost right out of the gate which we desperately need. The average local will get excited that the most popular player in program history is our coach and show up.

My parents for instance have no clue who Hodgson or Schertz are but are VERY excited about GMac.

Dude, PR 101 of being an AD nowadays. Be prepared to be schooled here on such as I was relative to what he said when introducing Red 3 years ago. :p

If this doesn’t work out in the next 3 years, JB will be 84 and we’ll be all out of realistic alum candidates.
Ready for SUMBBHC Buddy Boeheim?

I can see this going two ways.
But the most important thing is that other programs do not stand still. He’ll have his work cut out for him.
We won’t know until next Feb.
