It's Official: It’s GMac

Esports Signing GIF by Alliance

Congratulations to Gerry and to Syracuse.

My son got his soccer kit for summer league - without input he picked #67. I’m less than thrilled about it. But he told me he knows it’s over but doesn’t care, he wanted the number anyway - he is not a kid influenced significantly by peer pressure.

His total commitment to doing whatever the hell he wants to is equal parts infuriating and endearing.

My daughter picked 88 and even though I’m a history teacher it took me until this year (4 years) to say, oh crap, hopefully the other parents don’t think we’re extremists. She plays in the Albany area but we drive an hour from a rural area so everyone knows we live in the middle of nowhere lol. “Middle of nowhere” to them.

Here’s the thing . We hope he is the right hire . The reason there is apprehension is because the recent Boeheim coaching tree is a Forrest of wood rot. Will Gmac be the guy to resurrect ? Maybe . But strictly statistically speaking it is more unlikely than likely. This as opposed to coaches with a longer track record of success against the odds. It’s not necessarily about emotion and “gut” feel. There is a rational aspect to being dubious of the move.
Spot on post. Exactly right.

Now that is a good statement from ADBB. What I love is that he didn't try to sell me; we did a full-on national search, and GMac was the best candidate, as they did with Red. He highlighted positives while not trying to feed the fan base some BS. Stick to this type of honesty and straightforwardness and ADBB will be here a long time I hope. Good luck GMac we are all pulling for you.

I know nothing and my opinion is as worthless as everyone else's (not named Brian Blair). That being said, once Gerry became a viable candidate, I think it was always going to be extremely difficult not to hire him.

I suspect he crossed the viability threshold when Sienna won the MAAC tourney. Once people could point to him taking a 4-win team to a conference title in 2 seasons, there was going to be a ton of momentum behind his candidacy from SU donors.

In my mind, the only thing that could have derailed that was luring an established, winning, current P5 coach to SU. And honestly, SU would never spend the money to hire a candidate with those qualifications. Schertz was on the fringe of that but not P5 obviously.

I have concerns about Gerry as HC, but I love the renewed energy that he'll bring to the program and us fans. I hope that all the donors who promised to open their wallets for him follow through.

We need about $8 million in NIL to pair with the $4 million in direct compensation from SU. Hitting that number is the most important thing necessary to turning things around starting this coming season. Blair's statement made that crystal clear.

It's been a miserable past couple years for SU hoops. Let's go Gerry, crush the offseason.

What are your concerns?

This is a masterful statement by ADBB, and tells me he was the absolutely correct hire. It addresses so many concerns this board has.

  • Proven D1 HC
  • Turnaround
  • Connection to Syracuse was a bonus, not a requirement
  • Honor the past, build for the future
  • EVERYONE (and that includes you, mega-boosters) must get together to support this hire and the program in general
  • Welcome home, Gerry

I'm sure Jake could do a better job at telling us how great this statement is, but it just jumped off the page to me how he captured so many concerns in this one paragraph, subtly but unambiguously. Kudos.

What are your concerns?
Nothing earth shattering.

He did a very good job turning Siena's fortunes around quickly. But it's a one season thing, obviously wasn't sustained (since he left), and who knows if he can replicate that in the ACC.

His recruiting at SU was underwhelming. Maybe that had a lot to do with JB's disinterest in closing, and maybe it's less relevant in the NIL era. But we still gotta convince great players to come to SU, especially when the money is roughly equal between us and a competitor.

No one really has a great feel for the effectiveness of his offensive and defensive philosophies. Part of that is only having coached 2 years at a low major. Maybe he's a brilliant strategic mind, but we haven't seen it.

Gerry checks all the intangible boxes. And he'll excite the fans and donor class. But we really don't know what we'll get when the season tips off. He just doesn't have much of a track record.

Look, every coach we were targeting would have brought some unknowns and concerns with him. I'm not singling Gerry out, so don't bring your "Gerry hater" energy to me.

There's simply a lot we don't know.

All I will say now that it’s officially official, he cannot have a Hofstra type loss next season and needs a win in Vegas. Fan sentiment will turn quick

We are all speculating for now but we have to see what the staff and then the roster looks like to adequately layout the majority of the concerns which will hopefully be reduced thereafter.

It will be a rapid fire next couple months. I’m glad there is a buffer to talk to the kids and prepare for the portal.

Very fair assessment and LOL to "Gerry hater energy". I'm glad I didn't have my camera on during the conference call when I read that.

Fair enough.
