Thank God...

Will football ever make it's way back or is that done? Seems to me that's done. Just a guess on my part.

Should be possible.. We play inside... and now we have money. SPEND THAT SHITT AND GET ME a staff that can compete. If shafer fails that is.

I rarely go over to the football board, but in looking at it today, I was amazed.
While we have fans that are a little overly optimistic about our team/players on this board, there are posters on the football board that are simply delusional. One person even believes that Syracuse will beat Clemson!
I sensed a feeling of desperation that I hope we never have here.

JB is the difference maker.

Some even believe that G has no chance to start at 2 first game.

Its pulse is fading. Outside of the people on this board, and those who live in western NY, no one cares about SU football. I know people on this board do not want to hear it (why I rarely go to the football board) but Syracuse football today is irrelevant.

An interesting comparison made by my dad the other day was that Syracuse is the college football equivalent of Kodak. They both were titans in their day producing the best of the best. Kodachrome and cameras for Kodak, all americans and hall of famers for syracuse. But then each became stale and hit hard times. Kodak refused to go digital and went bankrupt, Syracuse decided to let go of PP and hire GRob, basically bankrupting the program. Now both face an uphill battle simply for relevancy. Not superiority...relevancy.

Yes, we've had a little success these past few years. But in my heart of hearts, I believe that lower bowl games will be the absolute ceiling for SU football for years to come. We are a private school situated in a snowy, cold, rust belt town. We cannot get the 4 or 5 star recruits. We do not have the necessary facilities to compete with the big dogs. No quality coach will see this job as more than a stepping stone.

Again, just my opinion, but I think it will take a small miracle to elevate Syracuse to a level of respectability among your average college football fan.

I hope that this entire post gets proved wrong.

I guess I will be the one to take the bait and will respectfully disagree and am on board that hopes your post is proved wrong. You make some valid points...all of you here do, but i remember people on these boards saying the same thing last year when we lost to Minnesota (yes I know this year is different). Look, football is not in the category of the SEC. Never will be, I get it. But I do remember that as a kid in the late 70s and 80s we were horrible. GRob horrible. "Sack Mac Pack", anyone??? We got out of that and had a nice run from 87-01. In those years we were a solid Top 15-35 program. We beat teams like Penn St, Ohio St, Georgia, Florida, Miami, Texas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Clemson, etc. That in retrospect is where I think we need to be and there is no reason it cant be done. Many of you younger guys wouldnt believe this but to me seeing Oregon, TCU, K State, NW, Baylor, Stanford in the Top 25 is crazy. These teams were irrelevant then. So what that tells me is that if they can rise from the depths why cant we? No, we dont have Nike $$ and wont be where Oregon is, but who will? But we sure as hell can be what NW has become. No doubt about it. And no matter what, I will be a fan of the hoops and football programs (along with all the other sports) because I am a Syracuse fan...period.

Good take.

I have expressed my displeasure of the sport in general. We are never ever ever going to win a national championship in football. Ever. Cant be done with the system we have in place so every season is a let down as far as i am concerned. It just sucks the way the sport has changed. Thats why i laugh when people try to tell me with a straight face that we are still a football school. Blows me away.

I am not a big college football fan, especially when SU's program is mediocre to putrid. So as someone that doesn't follow it as closely I am in the camp that thinks the ACC money gives us the opportunity to get the program back to a mid to fringe top 25 placement and every so often higher. It is by no means a guarantee as every conference needs to have its bottom tier. The challenge is to avoid allowing ourselves to be relegated to the bottom tier just because we don't have all of the same advantages of a Clemson or Florida State.

One thing that I really like about the current administration is that they look at the problem and even with limited resources see potential solutions rather than problems that can't or don't need to be addressed. Sometimes the solutions don't work or don't have the desired effect, but we are proactive and working to improve all of the programs and for the most part there have been LOTS and LOTS of positive changes.

I think the move to the ACC helps us with recruiting which is where we need the help. Without the players, we don't have a team. We need 4-5 star recruits, it's simple.

We haven't had one ESPN top 300 recruit, and one 4 star recruit in the past 5 years. We're not getting guys in here, and to be honest, why would they want to? Outside of playing in the ACC I unfortunately cannot imagine one reason a recruit would want to play football for Syracuse.

If we all scrape together our pennies and rent a Cam Newton for a year we could compete. Oh course even if we had him we'd probably stick with Drew Allen...

If you are truly Orange, you take the lumps and in spite of every indication that a program is floundering and not making significant progress as one might hope, you continue to support the program(s) and understand that things change over time, for both better and worse. It should be noted however that no program can hope to improve and build upon it's current state without the support of the student body, the alumni, regional support, and those who because of some tangential connection to the program or University, have come to follow one or more of the Syracuse programs. As long as one kid has committed to spend his time wearing a Syracuse uniform and gives his all to the program through practice, working out, personal sacrifice, and leaves it all out on the arena of which ever sport he competes in, all while maintaining is grades, that kid and his team deserve the support of people like us who from the comfort of our own homes are oftentimes all to quick to criticize and find fault. Lombardi was wrong in saying "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing".

There are many examples of programs who have disintegrated from adopting an attitude of winning at any cost. Shafer may not be the most experienced coach we could have selected and he may in fact be in over his head. But nobody can dispute the fact that his heart and soul are completely committed to the Syracuse Football Program. The man deserves a fair chance. 2 games is not a fair chance.

It may be that Syracuse Football never again raises up the level of National prominence that we all would love to see. The game has changed greatly even in the past decade. People here have made mention of recruiting and having the facilities needed to compete at the level of the top programs. It's certainly something to aspire towards but must be done with some tempering of expectations and a correction of the hierarchy of priorities that a lot of people associate with Football Program.

In the meantime I myself continue to focus on the Basketball Program when I'm depressed about the Football Program. I still watch all the games I can and ardently follow every game. With the departure of Doug M and the recent success and seemingly upward trajectory of the Football program we can hardly not expect to have some bumps along the road of transition. We are incredibly fortunate to have one of the most storied Basketball programs along with one of the most influential college basketball coaches of all time still gracing the court of the Carrier Dome with up to 30K+ fans at some of the home games.

We are on the precipice of a new era with a new Conference, new rivalries but at the same time we can all expect that we will put a Basketball team out on the court that we can not only be proud of but also know that it's absolutely possible that we may in fact compete for and win a National Championship in the near future. Perhaps the VERY NEAR FUTURE. So for those people who are so disillusioned about losing a football game to a top 25 program replete with a roster jaded with 5 star prospects, at home, in the 2nd game of the season, and that we are fielding a team with a new coach, a new offense, new Quarterback as well as many new starters... perhaps it would serve you well to remember that people are only as happy as they make their minds up to be. As for me, I'm more than happy to call myself a Syracuse Fan, for ALL SPORTS, EVERY YEAR, WIN OR LOSE.

Boyeeee, beautiful!
Agree with Flacusian. Always support the Cuse.
Always support the Cuse, but do it realistically. Understand the program in football is down and don't expect miracles, but do expect players to do their best. Coaching, as Flacusian said, may or may not be getting the job done, but give it a chance.
Booing a team rarely gets the best from it.

Thank God for Syracuse basketball AND Syracuse football. Central New Yorkers don't know how good they have it having the 5th and 15th winningest programs in their respective sports history in their backyard.

I'm a Mets fan and a Raiders fan. I know damn well how good I have it with SU football and basketball. :)

Great post, people who are basketball only fans think that Syracuse football is like a 3rd world country.

Just remember, football runs the $$ ship these days. I'd suggest you get on board sooner than later.

We just made it to 2 bowls (both wins) in the last 3 seasons and beat up on some really good teams on the way.

Things are not NEARLY as bad as some make it out to be.

I love both Syracuse basketball and football. I wish some more would do the same.

For me its more about my dislike for where college football is and the pre-determined 8 teams that can only compete for a national championship. The sport is a complete joke and if you are not in this group of 8 teams then what the hell are you playing for? A belk Bowl bid? BFD

Hoops is completely different. You could be 10-26 and make the sweet 16.

I love Syracuse football and basketball but I take basketball losses much harder knowing what is at stake as opposed to just turning the page when we lose a football game these days.
