Thank you, Mario Cristobal

Whenever you look across the field at your opponent and see Mario Cristobal roaming the sidelines then you know you have a chance. Kicking that FG was mind numbingly stupid. Kinda surprised the announcers didn't harshly question that decision right on the spot.

That guy has terrible football instincts. Last year against Georgia Tech all he had to do was take a knee and they win. But instead they run the ball, fumble and lose.

Today, I still can't believe they attempted a field goal down 7 with three minutes left. That's the same thing that Coach P got burned for back in 2000. How on Earth do they not go for it with that electric offense? I will forever be thankful to him for helping us win. I would be livid if I was a Canes fan.
He is a good recruiter, not a good coach.

Please let the record show I said like 14 times to my friends before the kick “holy !$&@ they can’t be serious. Are they really doing this?!”

:)
Just look at it this way - as an SU fan how did you feel when they lined up to kick the FG? I was ecstatic. Kicking the FG did nothing for them and relying on that hideous defense was a very bad idea.

Its an easy argument in hindsight. I think every NFL coach kicks a FG there. I suspect analytics says kick the FG. If they went for it and got it, we still would’ve gone down the field and scored. Let’s be honest, if I am the Miami coach, and cuse is in run situation, I’d be confident I could stop it, but they didn’t, and boy am I happy they didn’t.

Lafleur made a similar call in the 2020 NFC champ game and was destroyed

You made me look it up. GB kicked it with 2:09 to go. Miami kicked it with 3:49 left. Miami was 4th and goal from the 10 and GB 4th and goal from the 8. Lafleur later said he’d go for it if it was 4th and goal from the 5. 4th and goal from 10 is tough. Doesn’t seem egregious.

Im done now though, go cuse!!

Football coaches have some weird beliefs that they stick to.

One is that they'll get the ball back.

Another is that an oddly shaped ball will go where you expect it to 100% of the time it's kicked.

I try not to be too hard on them, they're concussed.

Eh, it obviously didn't work out and defied conventional logic, but I don't know if it was an all and out dumb move. There were over 3 minutes on the clock, 2 time outs plus the 2 minute timeout. At the time, game wasn't on the line.

Say they get a stop and a touchdown, now they don't have to go to overtime. Say this miss it and get a quick field goal on the next drive, now it's a two possession game and they're done. I'm sure there's other scenarios too, which, if any one of those happened people would be on about how trying a 4th and 10 was the dumb move when there were points were on the table.

I mean, out of all the possible scenarios, an absolutely brilliant SU run game extended by one of the most heinous off sides* we've ever seen wasn't really how we would've expected the last 3 minutes to go.

*they called off sides but the pedant in me is pretty sure that was encroachment.

Halftime if Texas and AM and Orlovsky said incredibly wrong decision. But he went to Uconn so I am right :)

I said it in the game thread. Even referred to the “4 point field goal”

Haha I've no doubt you did. I actually thought it was going to be a fake kick.

Would be arrogant to assume that it would help you after everything going your way

Besides, if you go for it and succeed, you can avoid overtime with a fg later

If Miami's defense had shown an occasional ability to get off the field then maybe the move might have made a little sense. But that part of the equation can not be ignored. His defense was gassed and SU was moving the ball at will.

With all due respect to all our great players, Cam Ward is the best football player in the building. He has a rocket arm and is extremely slippery when he runs. When we finally sacked him that one time it felt like the biggest accomplishment of the entire game. Why take the ball out of his hands?

I guess the question is at what point should it go to the kicker.

4th and 1? Yeah go for it, Cam could walk it in sleeping.

4th and 30? Yeah, kick, no reason to risk a hail mary interception with over 3 minutes and two timeouts.

We all seem to agree it was the wrong move at 4th and 10, I just think it's far enough to be in a grey area even if the benefits are hypotheticals. My over/under in that situation would probably be 4th and 19.

Agree Miami looked gassed. On both sides of the ball, really, and I'm proud to say the crowd seemed to be getting to them.

It was the pass-heavy offense that marched down the field though, and in that situation we really had little choice but to run. I think Miami thought they could win the scrums, but they couldn't and/or Nixon was too crafty and/or holy smokes dude how are you that offsides.
