Thank you, Mario Cristobal

I guess the question is at what point should it go to the kicker.

4th and 1? Yeah go for it, Cam could walk it in sleeping.

4th and 30? Yeah, kick, no reason to risk a hail mary interception with over 3 minutes and two timeouts.

We all seem to agree it was the wrong move at 4th and 10, I just think it's far enough to be in a grey area even if the benefits are hypotheticals. My over/under in that situation would probably be 4th and 19.
For me personally, if it was outside the 20 yard line and/or there were 6 or 7 minutes left and/or you’re down 6 points or it’s a two possession game and you have to make it one possession, I would have kicked. 10 yard line and 3:50 left with that amazing offense and lousy defense, you have to go.

I think the merits of the decision can be debated but its very far from a holy sh** type of call.
Agreed. It was 4th and goal, but yhat was 4th and 9 if I recall.

What’s the probability there? Maybe 25%?

Realize there was limited value in going down 4.

Eh, it obviously didn't work out and defied conventional logic, but I don't know if it was an all and out dumb move. There were over 3 minutes on the clock, 2 time outs plus the 2 minute timeout. At the time, game wasn't on the line.

Say they get a stop and a touchdown, now they don't have to go to overtime. Say this miss it and get a quick field goal on the next drive, now it's a two possession game and they're done. I'm sure there's other scenarios too, which, if any one of those happened people would be on about how trying a 4th and 10 was the dumb move when there were points were on the table.

I mean, out of all the possible scenarios, an absolutely brilliant SU run game extended by one of the most heinous off sides* we've ever seen wasn't really how we would've expected the last 3 minutes to go.

*they called off sides but the pedant in me is pretty sure that was encroachment.
pretty much my thoughts too. I didn't think it was a horrible call, was more surprised they didn't try for an onside kick. He must have really thought they would either get a stop or a turnover. After all if the game had played out does it matter if they scored a TD and won on a FG or hit the FG and won on a TD?

They had more than 3 minutes (3:43 I seem to recall) and effectively 3 TO’s with the 2-minute warning.

They didn’t expect to get ravaged by our run game.

That was impressive. And essentially how we almost beat them in 92.

I kept thinking this must be a fake. I was so happy when they kicked it.
That was exactly my thought; got to be a fake... and I did not think it mattered. I knew SU was just going to march down the field and score anyway. I was just sure SU was going to score.

Ultimately it was 1 decision in a game full of decisions. Syracuse won the game, Miami didn't lose it.

It was from the 9 not the 3.

But in that situation the two are the same. Completion probably means touchdown.

Unless I'm missing something obvious here, not lining up and trying to draw us offsides and then taking the delay of game and kicking at a minimum is indefensible. I think they should have gone for it anyway, but the chances of getting 5 yards closer and going for it are worth moving the kick back five yards when it's a chip shot, if you've decided to kick the FG.

That guy has terrible football instincts. Last year against Georgia Tech all he had to do was take a knee and they win. But instead they run the ball, fumble and lose.

Today, I still can't believe they attempted a field goal down 7 with three minutes left. That's the same thing that Coach P got burned for back in 2000. How on Earth do they not go for it with that electric offense? I will forever be thankful to him for helping us win. I would be livid if I was a Canes fan.
Agreed. I was also thankful that he didn't go with the onside kick following the FG. As you stated, "terrible football instincts."

I need to rewatch but McCord is such a threat with ball control passing, it had to be in the back of their minds on defense.

They responded to the fans, team played with a real edge

Yeah….just texted Mulhouse about the 4 pt FG math.
Can you please share Millhouse 's cell phone number with the board so we can all text him in-game observations as they arise?

What a bizarre decision. Best case scenario is that you stop the O which hadn’t been stopped all game and you still need a TD. Was that an analytics decision? Or just Cristobal being a dummy?

For me just showed a lack of feel on how the game was being played. Frankly if they went for it they score in my opinion. Only debate after that is how much time we left them after we scored.

Part of the blame should be on the Miami guy that got the 15 yarder. That changed everything.

The FG was appreciated but I have to admit I was more worried about an off sides kick than anything else.

One other point was miamis defense seemed gassed in the fourth. No idea why he would put them back out there to stop the run at that point

It was a ridiculous decision

I thought the same thing. They looked tired. I think the first drive in the second half, scoring on three plays, was a big punch in the mouth. Their defense was dominated.
