That is why you go for it. Stupid

you go for it because your players see you don't believe in them, and/or that you dont think your good enough and/or have no balls and they lose respect for you, all resulting in the inevitable and sometime unconscious let down and you lose. Basically it says you're a loser. Game was winable to that point, a potential program turning win and he essentially gives in instead of throwing caution to the wind int this type game. ing pathetic.

Consider me officially off the Marrone bandwagon.
At least Marrone is consistent - if it's a close decision, he'll take the conservative approach that shows he has no confidence in hi s offense.

Ok, so if it is that black and white, please explain why teams don't alway go for it? Why do we even need punters in football?
Down twelve you have to assume your offense can get two yards. There is so little downside to going for it art that point just like there's little downside earlier at uscs 32. You really want to get in a field position game with USC down twelve in the fourth?

Exactly. To beat USC, you need the following: MORE POSSESSIONS THAN USC because USC has a good, ya know, OFFENSE. So giving them additional possessions, bad. Less possessions, good.

When you currently find yourself in a field position game, yes, I'll get into that game.

Not me. You don't have time for that. Try to score and win

It's pretty comical the number of people in this thread that come from a standpoint of going for it on 4th and 2 was an automatic first down.

Can people at least have the intellectual honesty to admit that if we had gone for it on fourth, and not gotten it, you'd be lambasting whatever play they chose to run?

I can only speak for myself. I 1000% would not have questioned anything. Losing by 20 vs Losing by 27 means nothing to me.

I look at it like this...what do you think are percentage chances are of the following:
4th and 2 with our offense vs their defense
or
Our backup punter dropping a punt within the 10

...and for that matter:

USC scoring on a drive, starting at the 20
vs
USC scoring on a drive, starting from the 50

Oh, and WITHOUT a kicker.

If you took a lump of coal and shoved it up Doug Marrone's @$$ (4th & 2, down 12 @ the 50 yd line) in two weeks you'd have a diamond!

Wow, so either you are a mind reader, or I missed a much needed group hug by the offense after coach made them feel like losers.

Please, they are football players. They knew what Marrone would do in that situation. Same thing 95% of coaches would do in that situation. I promise you, no feelings were hurt, no respect (amongst players and coaches) was lost.
you obviously haven't been on a football field in this situation. I have. It resonates in your gut that your coach doesn't believe in you, in himself, etc. And you're flat wrong on what 95% coaches would do. I've already been in contact with the 4 college coaches that I know and among these 4 you're already wron. Marones wussed out. We'll never be great with this guy. I think we can get good but theres always gonna be a ceiling.

And to your point about intellectual honestly, off there as well. You go out swinging in this type game. I'd be shocked it he doesn't admit as such. It might keep me on the bandwagon.

Brilliant analysis--you're en fuego.
Relax. I was joking. They might win five in a row. Marrone might be a great recruiter and teacher. But he is definitely stupid. He's not alone in this stupid game which helps.

EXACTLY, the only way I regain my faith in HCDM is if he decides different in the future or expresses some type of self-criticism for flaming out on that call!

not saying automatic. Saying that at that point, you have to hope things go right on offense because it's all moot otherwise.

Maybe it's just a coincidence that the defense looked most deflated after their coach decided to keep it close and hope to take the lead in the sixth quarter

hindsight is always 20/20. Yesgoing for it would have/ could have been just dandy. but they didnt. Maybe marrone doesnt want to show the whole playbook just yet

When exactly is the time to "'show the playbook" if not in the key moment of the 4th quarter vs the #2 team in the country?

While you're basing me being wrong on 4 college coaches you know saying they would have gone for it, I'm thinking it probably explains why those 4 college coaches are able to take your call about the Syracuse football game on a Saturday, the busiest day in college football.

I'd argue we don't.

If you really think it's that obvious that I haven't been on a football field in a similar situation, you should really start questioning your intuitions.

Been there, both as player and coach.

Its just simple basic math. You are at least as likely to get two yards as you are to get a quick stop and you'll have more time if you bank on the 2 yards rather than banking on a quick stop.
