That is why you go for it. Stupid

not saying automatic. Saying that at that point, you have to hope things go right on offense because it's all moot otherwise.

Maybe it's just a coincidence that the defense looked most deflated after their coach decided to keep it close and hope to take the lead in the sixth quarter

By the way, I'd much perfer this debate at a bar, being obnoxiously loud about, finally ending it when I get drunk enough to dance like an a-hole in one of my fine Hawaiian shirts.

you go for it because your players see you don't believe in them, and/or that you dont think your good enough and/or have no balls and they lose respect for you, all resulting in the inevitable and sometime unconscious let down and you lose. Basically it says you're a loser. Game was winable to that point, a potential program turning win and he essentially gives in instead of throwing caution to the wind int this type game. ing pathetic.

Consider me officially off the Marrone bandwagon.

Bingo. Well said CR.

You have to give the troops a reason to believe. That was a big, big mistake.

When we're 5-2 in a couple of weeks, all of you who are off the bandwagon--don't bother crawling back.

That doesn't change the fact that there were two calls that were absolutely atrocious.

Its just simple basic math. You are at least as likely to get two yards as you are to get a quick stop and you'll have more time if you bank on the 2 yards rather than banking on a quick stop.

the frustrating point that nobody's talking about is that we had TWO plays to get two yards. this wasn't a one play coin flip. they could have spread them and run a draw or sneak on third. best case you get it. worst case, it's down to 1 yard or less needed. absolutely nuts. and it's that stupidness that required us to onside kick with 7 minutes left. we were forced to rely on a much bigger longshot play than 2 plays to get 2 yards.

Honestly, I was more upset with the play in the first half when we didn't go for it on 4th and 7 [or whatever] inside the 30. Ended up resulting in a net 12 yard punt.

But fundamentally, I disagree with the premise of this post. There are plays every game that you can second guess any coach in any college game.

The people calling for him to be fired and jumping off the bandwagon are out of their minds. The players we've recruited these past few years--when the program has been climbing back from it's lowest point--are heads and shoulders bigger / faster / more athletic than before. Just imagine what we'll be able to accomplish on the recruiting trail once we string together a couple of consecutive bowl appearances, the first of which will be this year. And in case some of those people calling for Marrone to be canned didn't notice, we went toe to toe for most of the game against the #2 team in the country. The same team that some of those aforementioned posters suggested last week would lay 80 on us, or beat us by 50.

The transformation on the field this year compared to last year is stark and palpable. I think that some people [not you, because I personally know you understand] don't fully appreciate how lousy we were, and how far we've come.

Yep, that's totally fair.

I know what you meant in your post. And you're absolutely right...this year is a major improvement. Without any question no matter how you look at it.

We are functional again.

No Pyrrhic victories anymore. Time to win some games.

I take it as a good sign that people are upset that we lost to #2 USC--that alone shows how far we've come.

Points from the 32 are rare. Thats what cliched it for Gregg Williams in buffalo . And now we really know how stupid that guy it's. But back then there were probably people who'd say hire could he be dumb to get where he is

While you're basing me being wrong on 4 college coaches you know saying they would have gone for it, I'm thinking it probably explains why those 4 college coaches are able to take your call about the Syracuse football game on a Saturday, the busiest day in college football.

It's a bit comical that you're attempting to substantiate your 95% comment...which is purely opinion and based on nothing factual. In my opinion, when you look at the totality of the game situation, I would opine that less than 50% of coaches would punt there, let alone if you were a coach attempting to make a program changing statement by capturing victory.

I think that right there will be the subtext of the board all week (and maybe all season). I guess I would ask: Are people upset that we lost to USC or that Marrone made some bizarre decisions?

Look, for me it boils down to one thing: we are competitive again. And I don't give a what the regulars on the board say. We have not been competitive for awhile.

We are there now and that's good. We have not turned "the" corner...we have turned "a" corner.

Spot on--didn't think of it in that way, but that sums it up perfectly.

You can be on the bandwagon and still question Marrone's game day decisions...the two aren't mutually exclusive. Based on what I've seen from the rest of the league there's no reason SU can't go 4-3 minimum in Big East play.

i am now off the marrone bandwagon. did the same thing last week 4th and 2 he kicks a fg, yeterday 4th and 2 offense is getting quasi hot and d is dead tired aqnd he punts-----awful just awful.

"stupid". Lol. Are we back in third grade?
