The All Inclusive QB Room Discussion

Having 3 guys like Shrader, Lamson, and Villari also allows the staff to be aggressive with running the QB.
I mean, we don't want them to get injured though.

A kid named McNabb?
McNabb, Graves, McPherson, Dungey were all dual threat. We’re shifting goal posts here on the definitions if McNabb goes into the strictly “passing” category traditionally occupied by pocket passers. 4/5 of the best QBs of the past 40 years here were dual threat. GS and DV have skill sets and the attitude that can win here.

This is a great pickup and both QBs will push each other leaving the fan base as beneficiaries.

I don’t like it.

Sure the QB room looks full now. But now we have three RS-Fr QB’s in that room.

If you’re Morgan or Lamson and the new OC and QB coaches, whom you haven’t even met yet, decide to bring another QB with the same amount of eligibility you have. How would you feel?

The new coaches haven’t seen any of the three RS-Fr workout in person. They’ve probably seen practice film for all three guys and decided there’s a need for a third RS-Fr QB?

This could backfire terribly.

It’s one thing to get recruited over with a younger player (more eligibility), but bringing in a guy with similar eligibility doesn’t send a good message to the guys who are already here.

We thought we were short handed with only three scholarship QB’s, but by the end of spring (or sooner) we could only have two scholarship QB’s on the roster.

Nobody is shifting the goal posts. Those quarterbacks could all run and throw. Shrader can just run. He can’t throw.

Except I think Lanmson and Morgan have better passing skills than Shrader and V so it’s not like they shouldn’t see a path to playing. Anae seems to find a way to get his QB’s reps. I like Lamson’s upside for the new offense. I feel like he could be more of a true “duel” threat. He wasn’t ready this year. hoping he needed just a bit more time in college to break out.

Unfortunately they could leave but that seems to be the nature of things now. It’s happening in every program. We needed another qb and he seems to fit . If one of the other two leave we will probably go back to the portal again.

We needed to add a QB. I don't think you can get picky about the years of eligibility remaining.

If we lose a guy because another guy came in, them you just have to go get another guy.

Staff has to bring guys in they think can help win games. You can't keep every player happy. There is going to be competition just like any other program has. Best player wins out and they all will improve during the process. We are at a point where transferring is inevitable. Especially at the QB position.

Agreed. I really, really, really like Lamson's potential.

But we need to bring the best players we can, period. And if the guys we bring in are better than the incumbents, that's just the way it is.

Competition is a good thing, regardless. May the best players win the PT.

In addition, if you have a running QB you need a solid back up and I think if we had a solid back up they probably would have played the last 3 games. If this kid can be that then great. Looks like he and Shraderr can run a similar offense which with the two behind Shrader last year I am nor sure that is the case.

Lamson was not ready last year and he is not as biggest kid either from seeing him on the field

This take is the opposite of how every major program should be thinking, especially at the QB position.

It's recruiting. It's how it works.

I get your sentiment but I don’t think anyone is dubbing him the savior. Just like his size and skill set. Also he was third string which doesn’t sound great but beat out a Texas tech starter who transfered in to Michigan with him.
I still think this is shraders team for the next two years and this is about building quality competition behind him. Not only for back up spot but to push him. Obviously lamson, Morgan or both may transfer depending how this shakes out. Just hope that doesn’t happen until after next fall. Important to note, that was going to happen regardless of who was brought in.

This is where I’m at. Shrader 2 years, then a transition to a similar skill set.. is nice in theory.

I hate any comparison to Dungey. He is god level in my mind and willed terrible talent to be competitive in almost every game we played. I doubt I live long enough to see another player at SU with his heart and skill.

Build the statue!

Dungey was a warrior...loved the leadership.
But his arm?? er uh no.

Not real sure he beat out Alan Bowman. Neither played a down of meaningful football this year. Bowman ended up throwing 4 passes, Villari 3. So I don't think either particularly beat out the other.

I've had fairly high hopes that Morgan could put it together and become an adequate ACC level starter but if Villari comes in and already looks more promising during spring ball then I guess that hope is over with. I still get confused with the covid year stuff. Will Lamson, Morgan and Villari all be RS-FR next year?

We’ve seen a number of times here players change positions and ultimately get drafted into the league at the new position. This new OC/QB Coach are on record as recruiting the best athlete and then see where they eventually fit. Anae is well known for developing TE’s and both Villari and Shrader have prototypical size and athleticism for that position.

Hopefully Lamson's thinking I got a new QB coach who put 3 guys in the League with another one about to follow and it'll be an open competition. There's no reason he can't beat out Villari if he's good.

So strange how quickly we are to jump to conclusions on what a player is or isn't. All I know for sure is our QB coach has an outstanding record of developing QBs and getting some of them to the NFL. If he thinks this kid is better than what we have who am I to argue. I just want to have a successful program and I trust Beck and his QB evaluation.

Based on their track record whoever the new offensive staff brings in I am behind they have proven time and time again they know how to run a college offense at the highest level and even within the same conference.

Agreed but we don't know if he thinks this QB is better than what we have. All we know is we needed a 4th QB in the room and our staff offered this kid.

It is funny how quickly people jump to conclusions and they should look at the Georgia kid before jumping to conclusions. Predicting the QB position might be the hardest job in sports.

Exactly all I know is that Beck liked his tape enough to offer him a scholarship no clue after that and at this point I trust Beck's judgment because of his track record. Who knows he may not like any of the other QBs on the roster besides GS. We may like Lamson but he may not. I would imagine he likes GS at least a little in the first place to take the job.
