The Benson holding

The broadcast zoomed in on probably two-thirds of Schiano’s rant.

I was impressed with his influence as the head ref first attempted to ignore him and sent the side judge to deal with him.

You can clearly see on the broadcast Schiano telling the head official to “Come here!” and pointing both at the ref and down at the ground near his feet.

I was impressed because it’s how I frequently speak to my 6 and 4 year old sons. And the ref, probably because Schiano was nearly 10 yards on the field, did as he was told.

It didn’t take a professional lip reader to know Schiano proceeded to repeat to the head ref, “That was bullshit!”

He ended his rant by repeatedly telling the ref, “Make it right, make it right.”

I kid you not the next play was the 3rd down where Rutgers OL was called for holding and a very late flag was thrown on our defense for unsportsmanlike (in the backfield).

As those penalties offset to replay the down, Dino (understandably IMO) walked onto the field in manner less hostile than Schiano had and was flagged to give them a 1st down.

This doesn’t excuse the horrific offensive display that ultimately lost the game.

I’ve never seen such an obvious display of biased officiating captured up close on tv.
Amen. Brian Higgins and Adam Terry excoriated the B1G crew for that series of bogus flags during the post-game (TK99). After sheepishly receiving Shiano's 5 minute hissyfit (including profanity) with no call, the side judge mysteriously decided to throw a flag on Dino for saying, "you've got to be kidding me". Those were his exact words, according to Dino himself. Unbelievable. If that's a bench flag, then every sideline in college football would be 2 feet deep in laundry. It's is just one example of the blatant double-standard enforced in this game, along with the other phantom calls (Taj's non-fumble, the "hold" on Benson, etc).

But as horrible as the officiating was, at the end of the day we handed them the game because of fumbles, pass drops, poor offensive execution, a problem at right guard and poor play calling. Rutgers sealed the win in the 4th by overpowering us at the LOS on both sides of the ball. They knew we had to throw and our D was tired - after a superior game. But it really frosts my cookie that before Rutty's first score in the 3rd in a 0-0 game, we stopped them deep in our own territory on 3rd/25, only to have the B1G crew basically make up 2 fouls on the play to gift them a first down on the 11. Maybe that's what Shiano meant when he told the refs to "make it right". Those calls got me off my seat along with many others in my section (117) - who were all eye witnesses to Shiano's sideline histrionics. Surprised there isn't more mention of it here ... but obviously there are other concerns on our end.

I hope the next time we invite a B1G team into the Dome, the league sends a more professional officiating crew.

The play, in the fourth Q I think, where the Rutgers receiver caught the ball on the SU sideline, and the side judge ran in from 20 yards and clearly marked the ball at least 3 yards beyond where he went out!!! Holy! Babers ran down the sideline and pointed to a more reasonable spot, and of course they fixed it. But that wasn’t Babers bullying the refs, that was just uncontrollable astonishment at the incompetence of the officiating crew.

Really makes one think regarding that new conference alliance and partnering up with the Big 10 and PAC 12. How will they handle biases regarding refereeing, scheduling etc.

The announcers in the Virginia-Illlnois game referenced questionable no calls in Illinois favor by the Big 10 officials during the game (pass interference etc) but Virginia walloped them anyways.

So this was the Illegal Formation at the 3:19 mark of the 3rd quarter that was flagged for “more than four players in the backfield.” The penalty was declined because R got the Halo call on the punt. (Which was correct, BTW.) But it doesn’t negate the fact that this is not an illegal formation worthy of a flag.

One guy was maybe an inch off the line?

Gimme me friggin break.

It won’t change until the college Presidents demand it and as long as the revenue checks don‘t bounce they are not likely!
There should be referee crews from a league not affiliated with either team. That, at least limits the bad calls to incompetence or bad eyesight!

Good post. But the Halo call was borderline at best. On that play the Rutgers returner thought the punt was a few feet farther than it wound up being. So as he caught it at the last second, he had to move up into our cover guys, who were pretty much stationary. As far as I can tell, they did nothing to interrupt his halo - he just ran up close to them because he misjudged the distance. Penalty? I mean, wow. It's a stretch like many others yesterday.
Hmm… I saw it as CA was still moving along the PR’s space. The other two coverage guys were stationary.

no halo rule anymore.

I thought you actually had to touch the punt returner though? Our guy did not touch him.
Hmmm… someone else posted the same thing. I thought the Halo rule still existed. But I’m probably wrong. If it doesn’t, I’m not sure why he was flagged. He didn’t touch the PR.

These are 2003 articles but it says a 2 yard ‘halo’ rule was eliminated.

Definition of interfering with a fair catch. Horrible call against us!
