-Our strategy of driving to the basket over and over again got us to the line but is it the best way to run out offense? We went from James Southerland’s dunk at 19:31 to Michael Carter-Williams’ short jumper at 7:18 WITHOUT ANY FIELD GOALS! That’s 12 minutes and 13 seconds! It would be an entire quarter in the NBA. We couldn’t come up with something better than that?

-The breakdown of those 12 minutes and 11 seconds: 21 SU possessions. 0 for 9 from the field. Three turnovers. We were fouled 9 times. We missed 7 of 18 free throws. Yeech!

-Michael Carter Williams: 12 points but 4 for 9 from the line, 3 assists and 5 turnovers. The NBA must be drooling. Of course, it’s hard to get assists when everyone is hell-bent on driving to the basket on every possession: only 7 of our 18 baskets were assisted. And it didn’t help the assist total that Cal was fouling us on almost every drive.

-Just 4-5 more free throws made of the 41 we attempted and we would have been able to relax down the stretch. That’s what I like to do: relax down the stretch.

- We had an 11-0 run to an 11-2 lead. It looked like we were going to run away from Cal jsut like we did to Montana. They scored to make it 11-4 and before we could answer, JB subbed for both his point guard, Michael Carter-Williams and his best player and scorer, CJ Fair. Why do it then? Put the pedal to the metal!

- CJ had a great first half with 14 points on 6 for 9 shooting. In the second half he was 0 for 5 with 3 fouls, two critical turnovers down the stretch and two missed free throws sandwiched around three pointers by Cal.

-Brandon Triche, against Montana was 5 for 6 from the field, made both his three pointers and was 8 for 10 from the free throw line for 20 points. He made the opening three against Cal, then started passing up open shots. Then he missed his last seven shots to go 1 for 8 and wind up with 8 points to go with 2 assists and 3 turnovers. The guy’s been starting for us four years and I still can’t figure him out. Will the real Brandon Triche please stand up? (Or the bad one sit down?)

-When we extend the defense to get those great three point numbers, we open up the middle and put a lot of pressure on our skinny centers to guard the paint. We were probably lucky Cal got rid of UNLV’s Anthony Bennett for us but we’ll likely face Indiana’s Cody Zeller next and the results may not be pretty.

- Can the NCAA please re-think a system that puts an Eastern Regional game in California and makes a 4 seed play a 12 seed in am arena so close to the 12 seed's campus that their players took classes the same day as a game?

-Ah, those last two minutes, actually 2 minutes and 22 seconds. SU is up 58-45 and looking forward to a possible confrontation with #1 seed Indiana. Allen Crabbe finally nails a three pointer to make it 58-48. CJ Fair misses two freebies and Tyrone Wallace cans another trey, (that was half of their output from the arc for the entire game). Now it’s 58-51 and we have work to do. CJ turns it over. Crabbe gives it right back by standing on the baseline. Triche hits 1 of 2 free throws. Cobbs gets a lay-up to make it 59-53. MCW hits 1 of 2 free throws and Cobbs turns it over, leading to the play that probably clinches it: Carter-Williams drives and actually dishes it off- to Keita for a dunk to make it 62-53. Solomon makes 1 of 2 free throws and Southerland turns it over but so does Wallace and Baye Keita makes 1 of 2 to make it 64-54. Crabbe makes a jumper and Fair turns it over. Solomon gets a lay-up and it fouled but misses the free throw. Fair makes two at the other end. Solomon gets another lay-up but we are able to inbound it and are on our way to DC for the regionals. And so to bed.

I thought the strategy of driving was good. MCW could get into the lane anytime he wanted. Problem was that no one could catch his passes. Problem was no one could hit free throws. Problem was the last two minutes was played terribly by both teams. But we won so things are perfect!
