The wife surprised me with a mid-week getaway to the amazing San Ysidro Ranch . . . and an even bigger surprise by taking me up the road to UC Santa Barbara to see Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt in concert. It's the third time we've seen the two of them (fifth if you count the times we saw them as a foursome with Joe Ely and Guy Clark), and every time is as enjoyable as the first time 12 years ago.
In the middle of the set, they brought Ryan Bingham up to the stage. Bingham is a young singer songwriter most famous for creating the music for the Jeff Bridges film Crazy Heart (for which both he and Bridges won Oscars). Bingham played three songs, the first of which was Crazy Heart, which he introduced as "kind of a sad song, but it always makes me smile because it reminds me of the time I got to smoke a joint with The Dude."
