Yeah but still...CuseOnly said:jekelish While I like this kids tape, I think the perception among the fanbase will be that he cannot recruit as well as Shafer and staff if we are now accepting a commit from and visiting a 2* linemen but haven't even contacted 2 higher rated recruits that have remained committed. I hope this kid is an early qualifier as they have stated they are reaching out to those first. Any insight? This type of stuff will have the natives turning on Babers pretty fast.
Yeah but still...
Now that he committed to a P5 I will be shocked if he doesn't become a 3 star kid after the recruiting sites look over his film again. This seems to happen way to often :noidea:Trading 3* kids that were committed for 2* kids will not endear anyone on this staff to the fanbase. Just saying.

You may be right, I am not commenting on the kids' ability as I think he probably should be a 3* from his tape. And the fact that he has only been playing OL for a bit over a year.
I am commenting on the perception of how this staff recruits to non Die-Hards and how it will be perceived.
I don't think the non die hard really care anymore. I think recruiting will stay pretty much the same as it always has more or less. We have offered and accepted countless commitments from kids like these over the years, it's not going to change with Babers. Once people accept where we fit in amongst the recruiting food chain we should be fine. It's how you develop the talent once it gets here. I think Shafer's recruiting prowess was very overrated on this board, I expect babers to be in the same vicinity of Shafer, Marrone and GROB. Difference being, I expect his offense to change that a bit over a 2-3 year period. Not a ton but a bit
That said, Syracuse fans looking for top 20-25 recruiting classes are kidding themselves. DEVELOP, plain and simple.
Shafer took one of those kids from Florida with no other FBS offers I believe ( including MAC). Marrone did the same a few times. especially at the OL/DL positions. We will not know how good this kid is until 2-3 years from now. I can see the point though too, I was never and am never really excited with scholarships like these but lets face it, kid like this comes in and you have to wait 2-3 years.
The difference is because the kid who Shafer offered from Florida was an STA kid, his twitter army was piling on as if it was a major breakthrough for a pipeline, which it wasn't nor would it have been once Rocco left. I am not saying the kid will or will not contribute because I don't know but recruits like this certainly don't excite the fan base bit we will always have kids like these but I certainly don't want a bunch of smoke blown up my backside either. It happened with Shafer and it will happen with Babers. I just think Babers might know a little more what he is looking for to run his offensive system. Our classes will always have 4-5 kids like this.
We will have to wait and see but as some stats guys including Millhouse I believe said that the star system over time pretty much bears out the recruiting rankings in actual team rankings. I hate being ranked 50-70 each year and if we expect to move up into a conversation of division and possibly ACC champs as HCDB suggests, it needs to happen in recruiting first.
I am not a star ranking guy but the evidence over the long haul is pretty indisputable. Not saying it works with every individual ranking.
I don't believe that the casual fan is lost either. More people have come up to me in the past few days that could normally care less about SU football to talk about it than I can remember. A push from recruiting ranking and wins can get a lot of people back on board. A ton of people would get interested real fast if we could crack the top 25 recruiting rankings, one thing CNY'ers love is being ranked...at anything, trust me. Same with actual team rankings, tiddly winks, cost of living, housing, etc.
Agree, Even during our "glory years" from 87-98 i don' think our classes were often better then the 30s and 40s ( someone might know the stats on that )Good Luck. Yahoo sports---- 2015 Baylor was rated 43, TCU 35, OK St 38 T Tech 41 Wash St 55, Boise St 64, WVU 33 Those are teams that I think we will resemble moving forward. I think between 40-50 is as good as you will see. Syracuse was 60.
I am not really worried, we can get to 7 /8 wins with Babers recruiting how we currently do, IMO. The next step, I will agree we need to step up a notch but again if you are looking for 25-30, ain't happening.
Babers is a system coach, not a factory recruiter. That is why I think we need to throw out the old beliefs, those pining for big Northeast recruiting ties I don't think you will see that either. This is why I love the hire. I don't think we will ever see the recruiting classes than many hope for
Syracuse needs a coach that can develop talent for his system. Marrone was on the right track and his classes were slowly improving. It takes time 2-3 years but I don't think we will need more than 1 season to see demonstrated improvement on the field. Just my 2 cents and by no means I am saying that I am correct.
6 wins and a bowl is what I would love to see next year. we will never beat the big boys by out recruiting them
As others have said, it's way too early to jump to any conclusions. Let's remember, before they committed, NO ONE had heard of Cam DeGeorge or Noel Brouse. I think you could argue that at the time of his commitment, Servais has better offers than either of those guys did (Buffalo, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Wyoming, Bowling Green, among a few others, as opposed to schools like Bucknell and Lafayette for Brouse, and Holy Cross and maybe UConn for DeGeorge, if I remember correctly). Heck, that's still a vastly better offer sheet than Brouse has, so let's not pretend Servais is a huge step down from Noel, for example.jekelish While I like this kids tape, I think the perception among the fanbase will be that he cannot recruit as well as Shafer and staff if we are now accepting a commit from and visiting a 2* linemen but haven't even contacted 2 higher rated recruits that have remained committed.

I wonder how many kids who liked Barbers but said no because they wanted to play a P5 and now that he is at one they will reconsider?
I was thinking the same thing...seems like he is out or re-recruiting all of the kids he initially tried to get at BG. He now has more to sell them...hopefully it will be enough.
