I understand going with this rotation and that the games are tight but still if we cant get any of these kids in a game now when are they going to play this year? we have a 3 man rotation at guard which will survive most of the time, but i have to wonder if we can get away with CJ all game and then Grant most of the time. You know there will be a game that Rak gets 2 quick ones and then Grant/CJ get 2 in the first half. I hope they can find away to get some forward a few minutes .

Not sure what we do if teams that can really press play us, glad there arent too many.

they aren't going to play much this year.

I dont mean this specifically for you Upperdeck... mainly for a lot of other posters.

The forum users arent changing JB. He wouldn't go 10 deep if he was coaching the dream team.

As much as love I Buss, BJ (and his dad) and Roberson... this isn't their year. They will all be fine. They will get their fair share here and there but come crunch time we pretty much know who the 8 are. Maybe 1 breaks out and takes over for Gbinje or maybe 1 of the big guys (doubt it). Maybe we'll go 8.5 deep at some point. but no more.

What was interesting was Boeheim in an interview said he scheduled this tourney so his freshman could get the experience needed. It seems the experience was focusing on Ennis and Gbinije only.

They will play when Boeheim thinks they will help the team depending on matchups and need. Cooney was hitting shots and Ennis played great. You could see some frustration from Silent G at the end with the ball tie up. They will get their shots and as long as they don't get frustrated and continue to work, their time will come...if they are good enough.

I did see one freshmen get some serious playing time!

Roberson doesn't play defense right now, go back to the St.Francis , Colgate and Fordham games at watch how out of position he is most of the time

I saw him slowly jog back on D in one of exhibitions after a missed shot and thought...son, if you want to play that ain't the way to do it.

They will get some time against the scrubs before conference play and then maybe against some lower ACC schools but they will not see much time after that.

JB is about winning games with his best players. I hate the argument (and I am not saying the OP is saying this just in general) that these kids should be groomed to be ready in March. Hell with that. They are freshmen and they will have their moment at some point in their time here. This year isnt that time.

I also dont like the argument that we should play them, sacrifice a few losses so they are better. Screw that.

Yeah I almost have to laugh. JB isn't going to play a deep rotation when it matters. It's not even worth bringing him. We have 3 guards we play, and 5 big guys. If we get injuries we will adjust, but other than that, these are the guys we're rolling with.

They aren't going to play much this year. After we get back to Syracuse we have Indiana and Villanova with Binghamton and High Point mixed in. The latter two may be chances for them to play. Otherwise they'll have to wait until next year. Only CJ will be gone (Baye too but I'm assuming DCII or Rak get his minutes) making playing time next year just as hard to come by.

he didn't say freshmen he said young players, and like you said I think he means Ennis, Cooney, Gbinije, Grant, and Coleman

Yes, I hope these kids can suck it up and realize that the players who are on the floor now were in their position at one point. It must be very hard for them! (And their parents, too.) Their time will come to shine, and shine they will.

How deep was our rotation in 2012? Seemed 10 deep to me.

in 2012? uh what?

you mean to tell me MCW was in that rotation? lol.

Rak and Baye were considered our 1/2 guy. You could say we went 8.5 deep. but thats even a stretch becuase some of those guys got extra minutes because Fab missed 7 or 8 games.

JB adds guys to the rotation late in the year somewhat regularly. Just in the last 6 or so years, we've seen KO, Rautins, Grant and Cooney all added by the end of the season after long stretches where they got DNP's or minimal minutes. Don't know if it will happen for this bunch, but there is certainly precedent.

all of those with the exception of cooney were due to an injury.

and im not sure cooney really became part of the rotation.

all 3 may get some PT... but all 3 will not be part of the rotation.

that is not accurate they were not added just because of injury.

also he has gone 9-10 deep even in important games when he had 9 or 10 he trusts.

this year the main rotation includes a lot of young and inexperienced players. It is important he play his best to win and get the top young players more time to gel. Mixing in the others does not help to get these younger guys some more experience. As the season progresses I expect bj and roberson to see minutes situationally therefore adding both to the rotation as a .5 so to speak. This maui trip is important as ithas gotten tyler, trevor and grant going alongside dc2 to an extent as well.

I'm not entirely disagreeing with this statement in the sense that I think JB tends to be much more comfortable having 7.5 players he really trusts than 10 that can play but have some holes or whatnot. However, people have pretty short memories: The last time JB went 10 deep was in '11-'12. The only guy you could argue didn't factor in was MCW but that was primarily postseason -- the kid still averaged 10 mpg for a huge chunk of the season (27 games). And it's worth pointing out that even the most ardent supporters of rotating in a bunch of players tend to shorten things up in the postseason. I know K did at Duke all the time during their loaded phase in the mid-90s. There just aren't that many teams that are going 10 deep in games that matter.

I'd like to see Roberson play maybe 3-4 minutes a half just to give CJ or Grant a small break. Just so they have more legs under them if the game is tight late in the second.

What do you guys consider a deep rotation?

Ennis
Cooney
Fair
Rak
Coleman
Keita
GBinje
Grant

We’re playing 8 guys solidly. 9, 10, and 11 don’t help us win right now. You guys should know by now that JB wants to win every game and he’s not going to sacrifice a win so the freshman can get two minutes of playing time. The only thing the 3 frosh have proved in games to this point is they miss shots (11-38) and struggle with defense.

MCW averaged 10 mpg over 27 games games as a frosh. He absolutely played a part in the rotation. There is not a single coach out there who takes 10 players and plays each an average of 20 mpg over the course of a full season. There are going to be guys who get bigger minutes in big games.

Outside of Joseph, not a player on that team averaged more than 26.4 mpg. That is at least 9, but I'd argue 10 with MCW getting squeezed primarily in the postseason (though he played 8 minutes and had 4 assists vs. UConn in the BET).

That's what I remember him saying as well and I'd add Xmas to that list. Kid's a junior but still very much in a developmental stage of his career.

I don't agree with this. When you attend games you realize just how much rest time there is over the course of the game with all of the breaks for TV timeouts. If the game goes for 2-1/2 minutes without an uninterrupted break I think that is unusual. If they need more time to rest than that it is either an extraordinary situation or maybe we ought to look at stepping up the strength and conditioning program.

Simple answer: JB plays to win the game.
