The future of HCSS

With the exception of our O i believe that our coaching has been very solid.

I'm sorry, I appreciate the sincerity of your post, but this just cracked me up. I immediately thought of, "Besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"

I hope he gets the side of the ball that's most important (by a mile) in college football right pretty soon.

I've never understood this. Are recruits and their parents THAT stupid? Do we really think that an opposing coach wouldn't just say "Sure they gave him an extension. But we all know how this works. He's 10-15 in his time at SU, you know that another bad year, or maybe 2, and he's gone, no matter what "extension" was given. Come play for us, we don't have that kind of instability."

I mean *I* sure as hell would say that, and I'm no hot-shot college football recruiter.
and what big time school might that be does not have that instability???

Seriously? We could start with everyone that hasn't had a 3-9 season last year.

You can always extend a coach, all that matters is the buyout.

Sure. So it's a hollow gesture, which is exactly my point.

everything i've seen on the recruiting front is in line with the chancellors academic mission at syracuse. they want great football players but theyre really preaching solid academics and citizenship. they'll take some flyers on a kid or two but even though we have lieniant admissions shafer is trying to be like stanford/duke, he's trying to recruit smart kids and raise the academic bar. from reading coyle's early transcripts i think shafer is the type of guy coyle will want and i believe he's got syverud backing to.

Boise State has a much higher admission acceptance rate than we do...77% to 49%. (It's a state school) Probably helps their recruiting a bit? Not sure how much that bothered Coyle?

In theory it might but their recruiting is middle of the pack and their record is significantly better than their recruiting rankings. Coyle knows you can win, win a lot, win against good teams with just decent talent. The absolute most important factor in CFB is coaching. Anyone that thinks Coyle would consider keeping Shafer on recruiting alone is absolutely crazy.

Extend him 2 years and let him know if we start moving in the right direction a longer extension is in store. However, if the on the field product doesn't start showing improvement over the next 2 he will be out.

This will give HCSS some time to get playmakers in and improve as a gameday HC. I think we need to give him that much leash barring an epicly bad season (gergesque).

No move on an extension should be made until this year is complete. Personally I am on the fence and can go either way depending on this season, imo there are still far too many question marks for me to extend a contract. Recruiting, and a sound defense alone isn't enough to grant an extension. I want to see a big improvement with in-game management, player development, and obviously offense. This is literally a make or break year for HCSS.

It is my understanding that Syracuse hasn't denied a qualified scholarship athlete for academic reasons in a long time. There have been other reasons, but if a kid meets the NCAA standards, they are admitted. Maybe Syverud changes that for other sports, but I doubt it would go into effect for football and basketball.

We're a half-dozen injuries at key positions away from the same situation as last year. You just never know. Hopefully our depth player have matured and can fill gaps.

we need to extend him now for recruiting purposes!!!! that is our biggest need---we deal with the other STUFF later---crawl before you walk!!!!!
Extend with reasonable buy outs

Marone was given 3-4 admissions exceptions as part of his deal.

I am sure he was distressed over going from a 30 mil athletic budget to a budget of over 85 mil too.

Big time college coaching is by it's very nature unstable. Even good to great coaches are always looking to jump ship for more money. Just look at how 98% of all D1 coaches got their Big Time jobs an how many coaching changes they have gone through in their careers.

Are you trying to say that Big Time D1 coaching is stable?

Man, is my writing that poor or can people not comprehend my posts?

Of course all coaching situations can turn on a dime. That is my point!

Why would an extension help Shafer's recruiting? Because we've created some illusion of "stability"? One that any recruit or parent should see through immediately? One that any opposing recruiter could dismiss with ease?

It's a phantom, it's hollow, and all it does is put the university on the hook for money that can be better spent elsewhere.

I mean, if an extension after year 2 is so critical why didn't we just hire the guy with a 10 year contract?!

I don't think that limit was ever enforced. It's only something I've been told, but the impression I was given is that none of the SU teams had a limit on exceptions, or special admits. If a scholarship kid was a qualifier, they would be admitted to the Falk College or the CRS program.

FWIW, I've heard that's going to change for the Olympic sports, who will be more limited in the special admits.

I'll play.

Is an extension better than no extension, or not? You seem to be saying that it makes no difference, since it is an "illusion" that should be "seen through" and can be "dismissed". Why then don't all coaches get hired on a year-to-year contract from the get-go?

Folks here are complaining about game management skills, time management, etc. Why does a school have to wait 2 or 3 years to assess the coach on those metrics? Can him at the end of year 1 if he isn't cutting it. Kids, parents, etc. should have known it could be coming. Good recruiter, who cares?

I see coaching extensions as sort of like a marriage. No guarantee that it'll work out, but the commitment of resources steers things toward making it work. Maybe it's a non-issue for factories with gigantic budgets, and donors that can, and will, buy out a coach's contract. Not here.

An extension is a measure of a school's commitment toward a coach. Seeing that commitment is important. Dismissing it as an "illusion" is silly, IMO.

He has three years left on his contact? Why does he need an extension right now?

Everyone has to realize this board is full of SU diehards. Nobody outside of one basketball poster who has awards named after him wants to actually be miserable or critical of the team. With that said people who are critical have a right to be this program hasn't been exactly chugging along bowl/8 win seasons recently. Its not like Nebraska who fired a coach who was never worse than 8-4 I think the HC is a good man, but hasn't proven he is anything more than on the job trainee who has potential.

I love that merely discussing whether a coach two years into a five year contract needs an extension right now is "negative".

I've said literally nothing about said coach' performance. Just discussing the concept in theory.

But that's "negative".

Next topic... Should we sometimes run on first down? "Stop being so damn negative!??"

A little too negative for me...try to be more positive.
