Jim Boeheim’s radio show is on Thursdays from 7-9PM on ESPN Radio in Syracuse, which is AM1200 or FM 97.7 on the dial. The show originates from Delmonico’s Italian Steakhouse on Erie Boulevard in Syracuse. The first hour, hosted by Matt Park, the Voice of the Orange, is on their general network. The second hour, which begins with the Big East season, is hosted by Gomez, a local radio personality.

The first hour is eventually, (it can take weeks) podcasted on the SU Athletics website on this page:

http://suathletics.com/podcasts.aspx

You can call into the show locally at 315-424-8599 or nationally at 1-888-746-2873. For Gomez’s portion, use 315-437-7644. Or you can submit questions from this page:

I will be posting my rough transcript of the first hour the night of the broadcast and will probably do the second hour the following day.

MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS

First hour:

Coach, those people who wanted to see a tougher non-conference schedule have gotten their wish. We're used to being 13-0 or 12-1 going into conference play and winning 30 games. It will be more exciting but should SU fans lower their expectations for this team since we're playing a more difficult schedule?

Second hour:

I didn’t call in in the second hour.

COACH BOEHEIM

(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject)

First a rant:

They did their usual swell job of publicizing the return of the show in advance- nothing. I flipped the radio on at 7:05 to just to make sure it wasn’t on tonight and there the show was. On top of that, their phone system wasn’t working so I couldn’t call in. I sent in a question via the link above not knowing if they’d get it during the course of the show. Then they got their phone system working and I was able to call in late in the first hour. It amazes me that they can’t do a better job getting out the show’s schedule in advance or on the technical end, (there have been numerous glitches over the years).

With Matt Park:

They were discussing last night’s big games when I tuned in. Jim feels that it was good thing to have this class of players come into the game and have this send-off to the season because “it elevates interest in the college game. Star players have an effect. They give college basketball a boost and will be the top picks in the draft.” He predicted that 8-9 of the top 10 picks in the draft will be freshmen.

Jack McCallum of Sports Illustrated was there as a special guest. He’s an old friend of JB’s since Jack wrote a piece on him for the magazine back in 1998. Jack said “I sort of liked him and he sort of liked me.” He also said that they were joint prostate cancer suffers. They are collaborating on a book that should be out next September about Jim’s career. It won’t be a full biography, such as Scott Pitoniak did a couple of years ago. This will be a memoir focusing on the Big East era and a first-hand account of Jim’s and the team’s first year in the ACC. Jack’s going to be following the team all year. Jack joked that it was close enough to Jim’s retirement 20 years from now to do it. “88 or 89 is a good time to retire”. Jim said that Jack was “the only guy I considered. He understands the game and coaching. He helped me to get this thing going.”

Jack previously wrote a book about the Dream Team.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_McCallum

Jack’s home base is Philadelphia and Matt asked him about MCW and the start he’s gotten off to. Jack said that the Sixers had hired a guy from the Spurs, (Brett Brown) to “recharge them but he’s not “in love with the rosters” and feels they still had to make a big trade to contend. He’s certainly impressed with MCW, though. He laughed about suggestions that the Sixers might tank to get Andrew Wiggins.

Matt asked the coach for a breakdown of how some of our guys have played so far.

CJ Fair has been “very solid so far. He’s the same player. We don’t want him to do something different. He’s going to get more shots.

Trevor Cooney “made 7 threes- then they guarded him.”

Tyler Ennis “had a productive first game. Then he scored.”

“We’ve got young guards. Look at Michigan State and how they did with their veteran players. We’ve played pretty good ball, although that second half was a defensive disaster.” Matt suggested it may have been, for the lack of a better word, “boredom” because they had a big lead. JB didn’t accept that excuse. “We’ve got young guys trying to win spot. Fordham made some changes and we didn’t react well to the changes.” A caller pointed out that we’ve given up 10 and 11 treys in these games. “In the second half we shut Cornell down and we did the same to Fordham in the first half. They started driving to the basket and kicking it out. We’d protect against the drive. That’s what they do. They have outstanding guards. Those guys are going to score 20-25 points a game.”

Regarding all the fouls being called “We don’t ever commit fouls like that. Referees are going to make calls. There’s been foul trouble in every game. It will take a while to adjust to this. The uptick in scoring is because players stop playing defense so they can stay in the game. It’s up in the air to see how this will come out.” Matt asked how it would affect teams like Arkansas and Louisville that love to pressure the ball. “They’ll adjust….People say that if you don’t have any money you should buy a lottery ticket and get rich. Teams’ wont got from playing a man-to-man to a bad zone, (because of the new rules). The coaches will work with the players in practice to make the adjustments.”

They talked about the upcoming Maui Classic. Coach said that “it has a really good field. St Francis just beat Miami, (66-62: the Hurricanes were 0 for 15 from the arc), Minnesota is off to a great start. California and Arkansas have good teams. Then there’s Gonzaga and Baylor. “

At this point they announced the phones were finally working and I called in my question. Coach: “We’ve always had tough (pre-conference) schedules, even though people don’t want to say it. I remember when we played Florida and Kansas in Kansas City. We used to have four tough games. Now we’ve got the teams in Maui plus three good games with Indiana, St. John’s and Villanova. Cornell and Fordham were much better than last year. I don’t know what kind of a team we have. You can’t over-estimate the impact of losing your backcourt and the shooting of James Southerland. Expectations nationally and locally are a bit too high. We aspire to play up to them but we aren’t playing efficiently enough right now to do that. We struggled to beat Cornell. If we played the same game against Duke, we’d be blown out.”

Matt noted that with Southerland, “It’s not just the points. He stressed the defense.” JB added that CJ Fair “got all those nice 15 footers because of James’ long shots and Michael’s drives. We lost three tremendous players who almost got to the national champion ship game and could have won it if they had.”

Matt note Brandon Triche is now playing in Italy and James Southerland is on an NBA roster (The Charlotte Bobcats). That led to a discussion of Arinze Onuaku, who was just let go by the New Orleans Pelicans. “He’s had so much trouble with his knees, first one, then the other. Big men are at a premium so I hope someone does pick him up.“

Scott in Jamesville asked about the “new hand check rule”. Coach: “It’s not really a new rule. It’s a point of emphasis. They used to not call it if you weren’t really stopping a guy. Then they didn’t call it unless you were holding. Then they suggested it be called. Now they are calling it with any contact.” Matt said it used to be about the effect of the contact. They agreed that any time you’ve got two hands on a guy, it should be called. Matt wondered if we will see more techinicals as players and coaches react to the tighter called games. “Refs will be patient with complaints. Players and coaches want to win and you can’t if you’re fouling. I didn’t expect it to be a problem for us. We don’t hand check as much because we aren’t out there.” (We are back in the zone).

Another caller suggested that the ACC would give us some tougher venues to play in. JB: “Sometimes in a big arena you don’t get yourself going. It won’t be a problem.”

Ron called to ask, since they are talking about the ACC tourney being in Washington DC, will it ever come to New York City? “Going to Washington is a good move. There’s a reasonable chance it will come to New York someday.” Matt noted that the NCAA tournament is in New York this year for the first time in 50 years. (That’s the Eastern Regional- the Final Four is in Cowboy’s Stadium).

I’ll do the Gomez segment tomorrow. They are going to have the Jim Boeheim show on Wednesdays until after Thanksgiving, when the Scott Shafer Show will have ended for the year. Then it will be on Thursdays.

I love these write ups! But I am a little confused. Today is Thursday. Did you time travel into the future?

With Gomez:

Gomez congratulated Jim on starting another year.

Jim: “Another year with you, Gomez.”

Gomez: “I’m now the same age you were when we started doing this show.”

Jim: “It’s what you do when you’re young and foolish. You look a lot worse. It’s no fun losing 35 pounds. It might be fun gaining it back.”

Gomez asked about the games in Canada and what they had done for the team. “We got more practice days. We had a competitive game with Carleton. With the veteran players, it doesn’t matter much. They’re just getting ready for the season. I’m not sure it helps them much. It’s beneficial with young players.” Gomez noted that there are a lot of good players coming from Canada now: did it help our recruiting? “There’s an uptick in talent from there but they usually come over here and go to Prep school and that’s where we see them.”

Gomez asked about the big numbers guards are putting up on our team, noting especially the big first half Nolan Cressler of Cornell had. “He was rookie of the year in the Ivy league. If you let good players get open shots and get in the lane, they’ll score. It’s probably good it happened now. When you struggle you learn. If we do that against a really good team, it’s big trouble. “

Leo called in and pointed out that women’s teams are often coached by men. Will a woman ever coach a men’s team? JB thought that some were qualified and that the players would listen to her. He mentioned Pat Summitt as someone who could certainly have coached a men’s team. “But its a different skill set, different mentalities. Athletic Directors don’t want to take a gamble. If it doesn’t work out, they’ll be criticized. Rick Pitino had a female assistant but she’s gone. There were a few of them but they’re gone now. And there are more men coaching women’s teams now than there used to be.”

The talked about Louisville and their chances of repeating. “They lost two lottery picks. Smith could be an NBA player. They’ve got a good junior college point guard Hancock and Buchanan are great college players. Dieng and Siva did a lot for them but they’ll be among the top 7-8 teams.

Some people started taking pictures of them using their camera phones. JB: “The worst thing ever invented. They look at the picture and don’t like it so they delete it and then come back and want to take another. But it’s when they don’t want your picture that you’re in trouble. “

Somebody asked how the team reacts to it when the coach criticizes them in public. “They know that when I talk to fans or the public that that has nothing to do with what I think we can do. I tell the fans where our team is, realistically, right now. We’ve got a freshman point guard, another guard who is starting for the first time and another who hasn’t played in two years. We’ve had some gaps in defense and are a little bit off on offense. But we’ve played very acceptable basketball for the first couple of games. We will get better- just not right away.”

Gomez asked what will happen in the Old Big East, (which is still called that for basketball). “Creighton is very strong. Marquette will make a big push.” Do we still care?

Gomez asked if Jim’s team has ever been as big an underdog as Scott Shaffer’s team is at Florida State this weekend and what do you tell the kids in that situation? “We haven’t been in that situation very often. I think Florida State is as good as Alabama, maybe better. We need to run the ball, make first downs, make them play defense. It will be a great chance. To win 7 games would be a great year.”

Gomez asked about the Knicks’ bad start. “J. R. Smith is hurt. Tyson Chandler is hurt. He’s the key to their defense. They need to play a lot better.” Will Carmelo move on after this year? “I think he’ll stay. He wants to win an NBA champion ship. Every free agent is looking for a place where they can win.” What about the rumors that top players don’t want to play with him? “Talk show hosts say that. It couldn’t be farther from the truth. He’s very good friends with LeBron. He’s close friends with Chris Paul. He’s played with those guys in the Olympics. He’s as well-liked as anybody in the NBA.”

Gomez asked about Jim’s reading preferences. “Mostly junk books. 30-40 a season. It helps get you through the plane flights. Maui will probably be a two book flight.”

The Dolphin’s situation came up. The Minnesota Timberwolves has outlawed hazing of their rookies. “Any NBA team does some of that. The rookie has to carry the bag. Then he has to go to the Deli. It’s not good to do that. It leads somebody stepping over the line. The Miami situation might have started innocently enough. Rookies don’t make enough to pay a $20,000 restaurant bill. I tell guys that we’re all in this together and we have to find a way to get along. Talk it out. There are 53 guys in a pro locker room and a coach can’t control everything. It takes good leadership. Tim Duncan looks at a player and says we don’t do that here. Some guys don’t take kidding. I’ve seen guys get up from a table when someone sits down. You should say ‘I’m glad you’re leaving. Now I can eat a nice, quiet lunch.’ On any team there’s stuff like that going on.”

Gomez asked who would win a game of HORSE between JB and Coach K. “He was not much of a shooter. He was a defensive specialist.”

Tracy wanted to know how good Boston College is. “They’re pretty good. They have some young players that have improved. Virginia is good. They let it away at the end. VCU isn’t a mid-major any more. “ Who’s going to be the best of the mid-majors? “Wichita State will be very good again. Gonzaga, St. Mary’s and Butler will be good. Drexel almost beat UCLA.”

They talked about Jon Severe choosing Fordham when he could have gone to play for more successful school. “He felt Fordham was the right fit for him.” Have you ever looked at a player on another team and wished you recruited him? “Sometimes a player will turn out to be better than you thought. That happens a lot on college ball.”

Chuck wanted to know how John Calipari does it every year at Kentucky. “When he was good he had a couple sophomores and a junior. He’s really the only guy who’s been able to build a program that way. He’s made it a science. He gets 3-4 top ten players a year. But some classes are better than others. You can’t do it with 3-4 pretty good players. You need 3-4 great players. We tried hard to get James Young.”

Would an NBA team “tank” to get a guy like Randall, Parker or Wiggins? “Any coach or player will not try to lose. They have tremendous pride. Maybe in the last game or two of the year…”

Nancy wondered if stress is responsible for the health issues suffered by several head coaches in sports recently. “There’s always stress but everyone has stress. When you get into a certain age group you’re going to have health issues.”

Larry noted that Hakim Warrick isn’t on a current NBA roster. “He’s still hoping to get an offer. He’s doesn’t want to go overseas.” They talked about former SU players who are playing abroad. Kris Joseph is in France, Brandon Triche in Italy, Andy Rautins in Germany. Demetris Nichols and Eric Devendorf are doing well “overseas”. Wes Johnson is “on the verge” of something with the Lakers. “He fits in D’Antoni’s system”. Also: will Gerry McNamara be a head coach someday? It takes a little while. All our assistants are capable. He definitely has the ability.”
