The Kaleb appearances are now becoming comical

I feel bad for him. And, at the same time, find it kind of amazing that he was a starter all of last year. How did we win as many games as we did?

Sad to see. A guy who put so much into his off-season. Came in with a bit of weight and strength (i don't see it now, though)... and he had a pretty good run with another team, didn't he? Overseas over the summer? I can't remember... Somehow, the mental thing has caused a regression. Any time he gets minutes, it's gotta feel like he's a relief pitcher in a tie game in the ninth, batting against the Blue Jays. He's forced to do 'something' even if the more prudent play is not to do something. So, we see forced shots against close defenders, unwise spin moves, penetration without a plan or means of converting...

I can't even lay this at Boeheim's feet. JB can only play a guy who's effective. KJ's still getting chances, but the further he goes without success, the worse it will be. Unfortunately, i can't see him in Orange next year. If playing is more important than the name on the degree for him, i hope he finds a spot somewhere where he can be effective. But, wasn't he going to be a Communications major?

Does anybody else remember when Jake compared Kaleb (favorably) to Pearl Washington? Jake is certainly entitled to a mulligan for his myriad contributions, but a more off comparison I can't imagine.

Yep. I certainly remember. His tape was great and was great dominating in high school. Then he got on campus...and reality kicked in. Don't think I've said much about him since.

Early reports last summer were not good. They appear to have been accurate.

It's halfway through his sophmore year and he looks worse than ever.
Which would be fine, if this was Marist.
I'm not disagreeing necessarily. It's HOW folks say the things they say. Imagine the shoe on the other foot.

Wasn't there a thread this off season discussing Kaleb and the people saying they didn't expect much were berated via text on the internet?

In the end these are young impressionable kids...
Having your coach's confidence and trust might go a long way in a players production, going in and getting yanked immediately after any type of negative play doesn't promote a kid playing through those mistakes. Add that fact that he usually will be berated by a hof coach on national tv... I have seen this story countless times in last 30years of SU basketball...
I still say KJ is the player to be named later in the Chukwa trade with Providence...

I still remember him looking like one of our best players in that exhibition against the decent Canadian team last year. He was getting in the lane and making floaters and mid range pullups all day. Had like 16 points if I remember right.

Confidence can be a fragile thing. He's better than this.

Any possibility of a stud juco coming in?

JB doesn't seem to favor Jucos.

I highly doubt it.

I hope he finds Losing more distasteful than accepting a JuCo.

Indeed. I realize it's not the preferred method, etc., but as others have eluded to, the lead guard (most critical) position for next year still may be a weakness.

i remember those summer '14 reports...2 words.

uh-oh.

If Kaleb transfers this offseason, then we need to go hardcore after a player to fill that roster spot. Probably in this order of preference:

[1] Fifth-year transfer rental
[2] JUCO
[3] Prep

Next year's team--on paper--looks loaded everywhere EXCEPT lead guard. Now, if Howard makes the proverbial sophomore jump, then maybe we're okay there, as well. If he doesn't, then we could really bolster the backcourt by bringing in a true PG to contend for a starting role, or one who is capable of playing both backcourt positions off of the bench. I think that the emphasis should be on player readiness to contribute--hence why I list the other two options higher priority than adding another HS prospect.

we are a program that should be a destination spot for #1. with the swinging door we now have with early entrees, it would make so much sense for a mid-major point who graduated, to come here for 1 year of glory on his way into med, law or whatever school.

Especially with the scholarship limitations, our scenario is even more ripe for us to exploit these one year players. We need people who can be brought in on a one year contract and who aren't "trainees" but rather can contribute right now and then be off the books.

Agree 1000000%

Melo Trimble was ranked right around the same level as Joseph (some recruiting services had Joseph higher) and he's probably the best PG in the Country.
UNC ended up with Joel Berry, who was around the 10th best PG in the class and hes averaging 12 and 5 shooting 37% from three and almost 2 steals a game. So while Joseph has been a bust, it wasn't just our coaches that have missed on him, it was everyone.

Very true. And that says something about what's going on with him ... I still don't think his problem is lack of talent. He's had a reliable mid-range game, and at the beginning of the year, he was hitting threes. It looked like he had finally expanded his range. Then the bottom fell out. I think it's a combination of lack of confidence, poor decision-making and (more recently) lack of playing time. Now he's in a vicious spiral of playing and producing less and less, and losing confidence.

I love how we check and sweat daily for these guys to come here in the recruiting threads, then when they do come here usually 1.5 in sometimes less we can't wait to run them out the door.

Help me out with this relatively new thing. Is this really something that typically delivers? Here's my thinking...if a guy still has a year of eligibility left, why is he transferring to another school vs. staying at the same school he's already at? Since these guys are older, are they being forced out at their existing school? If they were really good, wouldn't said school still want them there? Due to their age, especially in today's culture, if they're not going to the pros (whether NBA or other) how good can they really be? Thanks!

Not to pile on the kid, but the game just looks too fast for him, mentally. He's a scoring guard who doesn't have a size or speed advantage at this level and isn't anything more than averagely skilled in ballhandling and shooting. It truly is a shame that it hasn't worked out for him here, but that will happen. Reminds me a little of Josh Wright.

That's actually a big injustice to Wright, imo. I get where you are going with this. He underachieved also and turned out to be a bad character dude but Wright contributed. Kaleb does nothing well. Nothing even serviceable. Wright was a lightning bug/blur. I watched him nearly have a triple-double against either Cincinnati/Marquette/ND. I also remember him playing pretty well in the BET and hitting some big free throws that helped clinch us a BET Championship.
