The Kaleb appearances are now becoming comical

I love how we check and sweat daily for these guys to come here in the recruiting threads, then when they do come here usually 1.5 in sometimes less we can't wait to run them out the door.

The only people looking to run the kid out the door don't post on this board; they have offices in Manley.

Help me out with this relatively new thing. Is this really something that typically delivers? Here's my thinking...if a guy still has a year of eligibility left, why is he transferring to another school vs. staying at the same school he's already at? Since these guys are older, are they being forced out at their existing school? If they were really good, wouldn't said school still want them there? Due to their age, especially in today's culture, if they're not going to the pros (whether NBA or other) how good can they really be? Thanks!

Sure, there are numerous examples of 5th year transfers having an impact at their new schools.

I'm sure that there are also examples of kids heading for greener pastures for more abundant PT, etc. as you suggest. But the good ones generally are looking to win, and to land in situations where they can make an impact. Those are the type of kids we'd need to target.

Did TJ McConnell do this? Regardless, it worked out great for him and Arizona.

Breaking news CuseHulk makes a good post
i thought so too, then i said...but isnt he usually with the pitchfork crowd ,with insane rants, totally not understanding what he is seeing?

who hacked hulks acct??

Ah. No I'm not with the pitchfork crowd. I'm the one trying to calm down the pitchfork crowd.

nah he was a regular transfer

Yeah, he transferred for both junior / senior year. But obviously, that was a transfer that worked out in a major way for Arizona [and McConnell]--kid had a huge impact there.

Some grad transfers are late bloomers and are coming from smaller schools. Some need a change of pace or the coaches that originally recruited them are gone. Sterling Gibbs went from SH to UConn. It'd be nice to have a guard of his caliber on this SU team (despite his punchiness). Anthony Collins was a PG and a grad transfer to Texas A&M (remember them) - he's been pretty much just an assist man. he doesn't get to the line much, but he hasn't missed a FT yet this season (no wonder Syracuse didn't try to get him).

Something you may hear from JB (because we've heard it before) if you'd like us to recruit a grad transfer: We can't get anyone good to come here unless they think they're going to start.

We'd never want a 5th year non-NBA guy like Sims, AO, or RJ.

We hit home runs with MCW and Ennis. The basketball gods just evened things out with Joseph.
Ennis was not a home run. he ushered in the sloth tempo era (that is apparently here to stay) and neutered our fast break. He was soft on defense... and to what postseason success did he lead us? We've been punished enough.

The best grad transfers are usually the kids going from being a star at a smaller school up to the major school level. Louisville has a couple of those kids this year. Iowa State had DeAndre Kane for a year and he was fantastic after graduating from Marshall.

a lot of truth there, but thats why it will work.

when you have guys leaving who are 'scheduled to start next winter', then that spot is open.

it will be done late, after declares and transfers are out.

then we will be on the market and a destination spot IMO

Yeah, that takes it a little further than I would, but Ennis was hardly a home run for us. Steady player, poor finisher, wasn't trusted to push the ball in transition, never mastered the pick and roll. Scouts liked his potential, but he wasn't an elite Syracuse point guard in his season here.

Ryan Anderson from BC to Arizona?

He did almost single-handedly win us that Dayton game where we made 1 jump shot the entire game

I have less memory of that game than of probably 99% of them; I remember his bad last possession, but that's about it.

No ill will toward the kid for leaving, but he was kind of a blip on my perception of SU's history. I remember a guy who made a phenomenal shot (shot -- not heave -- that's what was so impressive about it) against Pittsburgh, made some nice floaters to ice a game against Baylor or someone in Maui, and had some unusual limitations that made me wonder how he'd progress.

I don't see the correlation you're attempting to make between 5 year guys in the same/our program vs. a complete outsider coming in for one year whom hasn't had any familiarity. I also wasn't implying we'd 'never' want a graduate transfer, especially if it would help us, but just wondering how viable and/or productive it could be.

Agreed. He was mature for a frosh in terms of managing a game and not forcing things. I don't care how short or tall the kid is but I'd love to see an aggressive, tempo-pushing speedster guard here soon.
