Schafer was calling for a stop clock spike .. Hunt ran play for 1st down ..it was huge .. who made the decision to go for it ..

It was a fake non spike call i believe. They were running that play

Not sure. It was a hectic final drive where I couldn't soak it all in but my memory is that nobody on either team really moved except for Hunt. Could be wrong, but that's how I remember it. I think he did it on his own.

Yeah, the commentator definitely said that. I think he was assuming.

I don't know...our OL didn't seem to be expecting it from what I remember.

If they knew, it was a hell of an acting job by the OL. It could be only Hunt knew that they signalled in the sneak.

It was almost like what Stafford from the Lions did against the Cowboys. Gut feeling and it paid off.

Weird, though, that the clock kept running -- should have stopped with a first down, and reset the sticks.

The time did stop after Hunt got the first but re-started as soon as the sticks were reset. I got the feeling the o-line had no idea, none of them moved ... or perhaps that was designed that way? Either way, it was brilliant - got a first down and stop the clock for a few precious seconds.

that play worked. but they should have spiked after the first down , they lost 10-15 secs on that.

my view from the TV set looked like Hunt ad libed and did that on his own. in retrospect it was a good decision to do it but could've been costly. I wanted him to spike it on the next play, the first down when the clock started and they ran a play after burning what I thought was a lot of time. forget what play they ran.

the pass to cornelius down to the 8 yard line though was an incredible play.

Of course it was 100 years ago and you'll make fun of me for even mentioning it, but one time in HS, I was playing QB at the end of a game in mop-up duty against Oswego, and I called a pitch left, but kept the ball and ran a naked bootleg right and went 65 yards for the TD. The fact that even my own team had no idea made the "fake" indefensible. EVERYBODY thought it was a pitch left. I was 20 yards downfield before anyone even knew I still had the ball. And then I got a flag for spiking the ball and running out the endzone with my arms raised - unsportsmanlike conduct for excessive celebration.

But the point is, the very best fake is the one even your own teammates don't know is coming.

Hunt seemed to want to put the offense on his back and played with a lot of determination. Time and again he ran the ball for crucial yardage in designed plays, and exhibited uncharacteristic passing accuracy.

It was 1,000,000% called from the sidelines.

Come on now...

in an interview after the game, Hunt said he didn't even look at the bench on that play and called the run himself...

You're right.

It's in axemans article.

I'm stunned.

After the game, Hunt said the call was to spike it but he ran it anyways.
