The only way to be in on Autry for 25-26 season

There is also zero point in keeping Red after 2 weeks. He isn't magically going to learn how to coach in the offseason.
I get that some folks are sure he’s awful and irredeemable. There’s a good chance you’re right. There’s literally nothing I can point to from this season that suggests he’s good. The lack of defensive effort is inexcusable. No one has improved offensively. It’s a total mess.

But Red’s coming back. There’s no reason to pretend otherwise. And I don’t think there’s program is dead forever because of it.

That is great, but we can't act like that isn't going to have long-term effects on the fan base. They aren't going to just come back and fill the dome next year because Syracuse.com says we have Melo's kid and we signed this under-rated kid from Norfolk State, we are for sure making the tournament. They are going to have to build back the trust and hope it doesn't take a while like football. I think the goodwill is over with the basketball program.

The university is underestimating the apathy that continues to spread.

Can't stress this enough. My dad went to SU, I went to SU. I've been dressed in orange since before I could walk.

But honestly I'm still not sure if I'm going to renew my tickets next year. I actually even like Red, but this year was rough. My seats are extremely good and still I had people turn down invites. Seats around me were empty pretty much every game except Duke.

And that whole Mike Waters article just felt like gaslighting and damage control. Not sure if it was from him or the information the university provided or if I'm just reading into it too hard. But it backfired hard for me. They wouldn't have to do that if they were confident about the path forward.

Anyway, long way of saying I need to know the university cares. I know they care about football and I already renewed there. But I'm increasingly concerned they don't care about basketball and making excuses won't cut it. If I'm going to be in on '25-'26 I need to know Red is going to have tools in the toolbox next year that he didn't have this year.

Been thinking about it for a while... Not just because of this game.

Could change my mind, of course, if we retain Freeman and kill it in the portal... but I am not optimistic about any of that.

Running it back with a lame duck coach is likely gonna be brutal.

I had season tickets for around 25 years, dropped after Covid. I’ve watched about 35 minutes of game play total this year. There’s not much further to go except to completely stop paying any attention and posting here…I may hit that next season.

It’s possible the thinking at Syracuse is the folks who are going to bail have already, so they don’t think next year will be worse attendance-wise. I think that’s a terrible bet - but I also have to admit I’m a data point in their favor.

I expect next years interest to be non existent. The only way it’s not is if they absolutely, totally, undeniably crush the portal.

Trying to find something new to say here but there’s not much left.

The only good thing I can say is that it’s at least possible that we get a complete housecleaning of the roster and a few new staff. Hopefully Kline has the backbone to tell guys they’re done on the hill like Chance, Cuffe, Bell and even JJ that are just not good enough.

I’ll say this. Confidence and leadership is really hard to quantify. There is very little on this team now. You simply deserve to lose when your best player gets a bail out foul on a 3 on the road in Blacksburg and he misses all 3 foul shots and looks like a fool on defense every possession.

Next year the best we can offer is the brand, the dome, the NIL tourney in Vegas, and playing time. I know it’s not what it used to be but at least we have plenty of playing time to offer.

“Building back trust” really just means winning and being ranked multiple years in a row. Even then, it’s unlikely Syracuse will fully recover attendance-wise. Too much damage has been done already.

I used to take my nieces and nephews to Syracuse games every year when the team was good. My kids (8 & 10) have never seen a good Syracuse team and might prefer a root canal to attending a game. Other sports and other teams have filled that void - the likelihood they’ll ever be more than casual fans who follow on TV once the NCAA tournament starts is low. I’m guessing a lot of folks with kids under about 15 are in the same boat.

We'll see how it goes in the offseason, but if we lose Freeman, the portal is a struggle, etc. I can't watch Melo tarnish his legacy too ... I jus't can't.
You can and just like the rest of us you will.

Correct, that is what I mean. They are going to have to start winning again at a high level, and playing meaningful games and winning them. Duke at home. Making tournament runs. ACC tournament runs. Putting players in the NBA. Need to start making things happen again.

We need to change the style of play, also we need to play an entertaining style up and down, fast pace basketball. Shooting 3s and passionate defense etc. Modern basketball.

Buy kids from Bonnie's, Colgate, Cornell Good solid basketball IQ kids that can shoot and play hard.
Bring in a stud PG and Center.
Keep Petar and Donnie if possible.

The hard thing with this mindset though is that the days of Syracuse being ranked every year are long gone same as too many other programs. It hurts to say but those days may never come back or be just every few years.

As a fanbase we need to reset too and just start with expecting solid basketball on both ends for 40 mins with a coach and staff that at least appear to be steering the ship. We haven’t seen that in too long.

That’s not Kline’s job. That’s Red’s job. Red is the ultimate decision maker for roster decisions.
I agree. And now Autry will have the data to show him the better alternatives in the portal. Or at least that’s the hope.

This is like watching the football team in the 70s

I hear you. I tell myself I can still support the team by watching them on tv instead of coughing up over $4000 for two seats and parking. I have good seats in section 123. It’s hard driving two hours both ways. I’m going to hold off as long as I can to see who comes in the portal. I’ll do my own research on everyone they get in the portal and not just take the PR we get from the university. Freshman will not win games. They can be pieces, but that‘s about it unless you have Duke’s freshmen. I renewed for football this week. I think football is going to struggle next fall but there seems to be a plan within the program. Two years ago I finally decided not to renew and the deadline came and went. Four weeks later the university called and said it was not too late to renew. It’s all it took to get me to renew. Every year it gets tougher. I’m not as anti Red as some. I see some good things he’s trying to do on offense with very limited pieces. The defense is what I can’t come to grips with. It’s ok in spurts but nothing consistent. I try to stay positive, but the losing is killing me. The level of athleticism on our teams the past few years compared to fifteen years ago is staggering. I’m just looking for anything to convince me to stay the course. I really need to take up Griffin’s opportunity to sit down and talk about the program. They need to convince me they have a plan. It just feels like we’re swinging in the dark.

You’re preaching to the choir - I’m on the list of folks who think the program is never going to be nationally relevant again (like DePaul) or might take decades to return to relevance (like Houston). It’s part of why I think winning fans back is unlikely.

It’s much more likely we’re wondering in a decade why we’re playing in a huge Dome in front of 9,000 fans than it is that we’re drawing 22,000 to watch a top 20 team. I don’t know that dumping Red would flip those probabilities - but keeping him another year makes it even harder to flip the probabilities.

I don’t think we’ll fall that far or take that long. I’m just saying that there are other schools that are just making their sports the top priority and we are not one of them. Their money support and talent will just be better more consistently.

I think if we can’t retain the guys we need to next year, it will tell us all we need to know. If they have confidence in the coaching staff that should say something. If they all leave, that says even more.

One other thing I’ll say is that there is one man in our program that I will follow without question and do what he asks. If he says the sky isn’t blue or the sun isn’t hot next year I’ll believe him. This coming from someone that was a student on campus for the best few years of hoops we ever had from 2001-2005.

That’s Carmelo Anthony. If he says this is the deal and this is what I need. He’ll get it from me no questions asked.

Not Kiyan, not Boeheim, not Autry for sure or Wildhack. In my book Melo can do no wrong ever and the more he gets involved next year the better.

No next year they will run it back with Red and it will probably be a little better than this year because they will get a better point guard than Carlos who can be a coach on the court at least on offense and get the team better organized and in better sets but we will not make the tournament and then we will see if all the tournament or fired talk is real or not

If we lose Donnie and Moore, we don't have enough money to have a 10 man roster.

We got very lucky with football.
