Let’s hope he’s up to it because Duke’s pass defense stinks.

Allowing 9.2 yds per attempt, 69.9% completion, 156.66 Qb Rating against.

SU while giving up a lot of yds, it’s very much a product of volume. 6.3 yds per attempt, 57.8 completion %, 123.65 Qb rating are very good to solid. The last three games 44, 54, 61 pass attempts against.

Their fan boards are also concerned saying their defense is bad against mobile QBs. This could be a perfect storm for Rickie.

Here is what I'm hoping:

  • Collins has now had game action in two consecutive games / weeks, including in a pressure cooker on the road this past Saturday. That is now in the rear view mirror, and means he isn't completely inexperienced.

  • He spent spring practice as the #1 guy atop the depth chart, so there is already pre-existing familiarity with many of the receivers, this isn't a "break glass in case of emergency" QB who hasn't gotten snaps with the #1s before, and is not suddenly out of his depth.

  • Unlike Saturday, where he got thrown to the wolves with zero notice, Collins will have a week to prepare mentally for Saturday's game, and for the team to get acclimated to him, as well.

  • Fran Brown -- a master of motivation -- rallies the team behind the new starting QB, and to pull together for their injured leader, Angeli, and the team responds.

  • Collins might not be as polished as Angeli, but we don't have to reduce the playbook or change the offense in any way. I know that Willis is a beast, but the strength of this offense is our elite WR corps, and I don't want to see that change due to QB limitations.

  • Last but not least, there was a PS article about Collins last week, indicating that he wasn't bitter about Angeli beating him out, and that everything happens for a reason. Well, he was one-snap away, and now he is the starter. He got beat out in camp, but it's his team now for the rest of the season. Collins was a big time QB recruit, who now is getting his chance. He doesn't have to worry about looking over his shoulder, he's THE MAN. This is what he transferred to Syracuse for. Here's hoping he is up to the task!

I feel like a lot of other kids around the country would have transferred.

I also have a feeling (based on nothing, literally just a feeling) that Collins has a higher potential ceiling. That doesn't mean he'll get there quickly or even this season, but if the game slows down for him and he gets comfortable in the pocket to be a true dual threat, I feel like that opens up a lot for Nixon.

Everyone should remember it will likely take a couple games for Rickie to get into the flow, and that might result in games we lose that we shouldn’t. Before commenting how much you want Rickie to never get a snap again Saturday, try your best to keep that in mind if it turns into a disaster.

I doubt the SU staff wants to see Ricky running much. We need to protect him as much as we can. He better learn how to slide or get out of bounds.

I will be watching Nixon's play calling as much as Rickie's performance...

Last thing you want to do is overcomplicate things for a new QB trying to settle in and get reps on the plays, reads and timing on routes and throws to receivers, etc...

Start with playbook lite (if you need to) and focus on a more limited # of plays you can drill over and over for the first couple games and expand the playbook and reps slowly if needed. Nixon seems pretty savvy, so I don't think he'll try to get blood from a stone and overcomplicate things like Dino and co. did with Cutlets.

Just watching the NC St highlights, Duke's defense is porous. NC St was in control with the lead and just shot themselves in the foot. We just need to get the ball to our receivers in space and not have Ricky commit dumb mistakes.

Also, and I hope Blumfield is paying attention, Duke used an overloaded formation to block a FG. Basically 2 guys blocking 3 so I hope we are paying attention.

I think I know how this works.

1. We have a new QB, so we will be trying to run the ball more.
2.But Duke will overload trying to stop the run.
3. But we will know that they will do it, so we will instead try to pass more to offset the expected attempt to stop the run.
4. But they will know that we would do that as well. So they will play us straight up.
5. And so then we can run the ball, back where we started.

My wish list for next week:

1. We win
2. Rickie has a solid game
3. Some around here will start spelling his name correctly. For a straight forward name, some of you sure struggle.
OK... but strictly speaking, your name should be Nickknack.

I think that is definitely the conventional wisdom.

However, what we [as fans] don't know is how comfortable the offensive coaches are with Ricky Collins running the full playbook, whether he can make all the throws, etc.

If he can, then maybe very little changes [I doubt he will be as fully effective as Angeli, but who knows?]. Maybe we won't have to try to overcompensate and have the pendulum swing too far with running the ball.

If he isn't capable of running the full playbook, then I agree 100%.

I was just kidding. I think they run a full playbook with him. If they were going to get conservative, protecting a lead against Clemson would have been the time.

I don’t know about this guy. First time I heard of him was in the movie Wall Street.

You can be a brilliant tactical commander but you are really making a huge mistake giving everyone your game plan.

I think the art of war is more like fight club. Dont ever talk about it

This above... as good as it gets.
I'm as excited/nervous/anticipating/impatient/stomach cramped/etc. as I've ever been for a game following the Death Valley butt kicking.

Think of Steve’s first 7 quarters….

My negative thought of the day: GD IT, Angeli would've tossed for 500 this week. UGH.

But yeah, hoping Rickie settles in early. A good week of practice and hopefully he can slot in and we can run the same offense. I think more than anything it'll come down to accuracy and timing.
