The opportunity is there for Collins

Here is what I'm hoping:

  • Collins has now had game action in two consecutive games / weeks, including in a pressure cooker on the road this past Saturday. That is now in the rear view mirror, and means he isn't completely inexperienced.

  • He spent spring practice as the #1 guy atop the depth chart, so there is already pre-existing familiarity with many of the receivers, this isn't a "break glass in case of emergency" QB who hasn't gotten snaps with the #1s before.

  • Unlike Saturday, where he got thrown to the wolves with zero notice, Collins will have a week to prepare mentally for Saturday's game, and for the team to get acclimated to him, as well.

  • Fran Brown -- a master of motivation -- rallies the team behind the new starting QB, and to pull together for their injured leader, Angeli, and the team responds.

  • Collins might not be as polished as Angeli, but we don't have to reduce the playbook or change the offense in any way. I know that Willis is a beast, but the strength of this offense is our elite WR corps, and I don't want to see that change due to QB limitations.

  • Last but not least, there was a PS article about Collins last week, indicating that he wasn't bitter about Angeli beating him out, and that everything happens for a reason. Well, he was one-snap away, and now he is the starter. He got beat out in camp, but it's his team now for the rest of the season. Collins was a big time QB recruit, who now is getting his chance. He doesn't have to worry about looking over his shoulder, he's THE MAN. This is what he transferred to Syracuse for. Here's hoping he is up to the task!
that's a goose bump great post bro

Hoping that the zebras recognize that Duke is likely to be taking shots at our backup QB and act accordingly.

I was just kidding. I think they run a full playbook with him. If they were going to get conservative, protecting a lead against Clemson would have been the time.
I think it will definitely be the full playbook. Rickie has been here since December, if he hasn't gotten it all by now then it would be a major concern. He surely knows all of the plays now. We'll tailor things to his skills but everything should be available

Against NC State...
Duke gave up 364 yds thru the air//171 yds on the ground.
How did Duke win?? 4 Wolfpack turnovers(3 pics//1 fumble).
Duke allows 32 pts.per game..punter 39 yds/punt..
AT home, how are we 6 pts 'dogs??

LGO!!!!

100% because of quarterback uncertainty.

If Angeli hadn't gotten injured, we'd be favored by 7.

If Collins is solid, we're golden.

Not the playbook in terms of knowing it, but rather being able to make all the throws.

If there are things he CAN'T do [just saying hypothetically, not saying he really has glaring limitations], then that might change what plays we call / run.

Early on I expect a steady diet of two deeper routes to clear out safeties, Cook across the middle, and a running back releasing to the side Cook came from.

Downfield shots will come if they play man.

Need to stay away from deep shots vs zone.

I would love to see Willis and oline establish their will out of the gate and just get physical. Our line size was mentioned a few times in the broadcast. Punch Duke in the mouth, knock them backwards, give Collins quick and short reads because he is passing on 3rd and 2 or 3.
Edit: by the way Willis ran really well behind Ferguson and Mack on Saturday. Good job by the left side of the line.

I saw some good runs behind Byron too.

We're going to score on this defense. We can make the game a lot easier if some scores happen early and get the Dome into it.

I think I know how this works.

1. We have a new QB, so we will be trying to run the ball more.
2.But Duke will overload trying to stop the run.
3. But we will know that they will do it, so we will instead try to pass more to offset the expected attempt to stop the run.
4. But they will know that we would do that as well. So they will play us straight up.
5. And so then we can run the ball, back where we started.
I think we will use the swings to run and open them up and gash them with QB draws

Rickie has a tendency to throw into coverage. Nixon and the staff know that. They need to drill into his head to throw the ball away and not try to squeeze anything short. Lots of swing passes in the flats. Lots of deep shots and a few QB draws to keep them honest

We have multiple receivers that can win 50/50 balls on the outside and play defense when the throw is off. Rickie has a strong arm, hopefully we take some shots. Hopefully those moves by Jontay and Vilari open them up for 3rd down conversions over the middle. It looked like they both got ample separation that should get us some 3rd down conversions.

Duke has 2 5’10” corners that play lots of press coverage, and are left on islands.

We have two big guys on the outside that can go up and get contested balls better than anyone in the conference.

They may not be able to cover us the way they like to. I’m interested to see if they make changes, or challenge Collins to beat them down the sidelines.

If Rickie doesn’t turn it over and we can get Yasin going, there’s no reason we shouldn’t win. I worry about Rickie’s turnover potential. I have no evidence but it’s just a feeling I get watching him throw.
Agree. I remember two throws that should have been picks if not for great plays by the wr turning into DBs. Thought I heard he had a problem with picks in spring ball but could have been bad information.

Yep, it was solid information that I remember reading from Richmond.

Cuse Fandom aside I’m really rooting for Rickie to play well. He’s a very likable guy in interviews and I’ve been impressed with how he handled losing QB1 role. That’s not an easy pill to swallow so for him to remain very close with Steve and watch film constantly together - he deserves the break that came his way

Should make sure that they both get to meet Villardi, and JRS a lot in the 1st half.

How fast is Rickie actually? He did not look that quick while trying to avoid the pass rush against Clemson. Is he really a dual threat?

Its hard to tell so far. I hope so
