The Penn St Dumpster Fire Thread

Contrition?

I'll never understand the viewpoint that Penn State has been punished enough, or giving them a pass when a significant portion of their reprehensible fans continue to believe this day that they were the victims on that their program was punished unfairly.

Certainly not all of them, but many.
RF unfortunately I think what you're describing is extremely common in sports fandom. Penn State is probably the most heinous possible example. Lots of fans all over the country and world make exceptions for their personal value system when it's their own team. This honestly feels like it could be a PhD dissertation topic.. "how tribal association with one's favorite team influences their value system.'

A significant portion of Ravens fans act shocked and appalled and make pathetic excuses if you bring up how Ray Lewis was almost certainly involved in a double murder. Same thing with Kobe's sexual assault situation, or Jim Brown's disturbing history of domestic violence. I've seen videos of OJ Simpson visiting Bills home games, and idiot fans being excited to see him and asking for a picture. All those same people would never in a million years support murder or rape, but there's just something about sports allegiance that makes a segment of the population completely insane.

Maybe this is self-selection bias because I try to associate with non-horrible people, but I know a lot of PSU fans (there are tons in my neighborhood) and the majority of them think Paterno is a scumbag and were happy his statue was taken down.

The "idea" comes from numerous Penn State fans I've spoken with over the years, scattered across dozens of conversations, who condemn what happened while simultaneously glorifying Paterno. This includes numerous, lengthy arguments with someone from Pennsylvania who is a PSU fan that I am close with.

Djorange summed it up perfectly above -- the deification is bizarre. They should have gotten death penalty, they didn't, and they feel vindicated because they got the wins back. They weren't punished severely enough.

If you disagree, that's fine.
The fan base is disgusting and embarrassing

There were riots and protests over Paternos firing.

I do vehemently disagree. I don’t believe there are people out there who dismiss child molestation

Then I would suggest you're myopically focusing on only one aspect of this, while ignoring the other things I'm talking about. I. e., nobody disagrees that child molestation is bad, but their subsequent behavior and actions defending the program and Joe Paterno, and railing against the NCAA for being punished are MASSIVELY incongruent with that position. If you "vehemently disagree" with that, then I'd prefer to disengage.

I really don't want to make this personal blanko, nothing against you, but I am happy to see that there are others in this thread who feel the same way that I do about that loathsome fan base.

Disgusting.

Thank you.

My first thought is do they hire someone with something offensive in their background like Paterno and Franklin.

My second thought, Norvell could be looking for a job. (This one was supposed to be funny, it is not serious.)

Expert in fantasy, obviously.

Penn State is not hiring Fran Brown.

Cignetti has done more and obviously fits the mold.

Hell Brent Key is more likely.
Brent Key is absolutely not more likely than Fran Brown in this scenario. Lol

Key grew up in Alabama, has never lived further north than North Carolina and is the HC of his Alma Mater.

It’s not 0 percent, if Penn State expresses any interest, are we so sure Fran won’t at least listen? Syracuse may have to show it cards in this one. Whatever those cards signal.
