The Penn St Dumpster Fire Thread

Firing Franklin is stupid. Who do they think they're going to get that is better?

Fran won't even be on the short list.

Matt Rhule
Jeff Nixon OC
ERob Asst HC/DL

I'd say Rhule and 1 of the other 2 happen.

Nixon and ERob are replaceable. ERob more obvious.

If Don Brown is really on staff I have to assume he'll be our next DC.

It’s not 0 percent, if Penn State expresses any interest, are we so sure Fran won’t at least listen? Syracuse may have to show it cards in this one. Whatever those cards signal.

Look I hope we don’t lose him. But it would be very logical for Penn State to be interested in him.
He isn't even in their top ten of candidates.

I think if Fran wants Penn St he will do what he did here. Pitch himself to Kraft. He’s an incredible sales man so I would gather the longer you see his name from reputable sources it would mean he’s interested in pitching

I think money is too great to discount it. He would be foolish not to run this out based on that and being in the BIG.

I hope Penn st goes another way but we wil know soon enough.

I was reading a Penn State thread and none of the 50 messages mentioned him even as a crazy long shot

Again quoting my cousin but there is interest there, if low. I think Arkansas may also have interest.

That said I'm not worried about it. Fran said he's here to stay and I believe him. Some people get to the point where seeing their work through is worth more to them than a raise, particularly when said raise is attached to, you know, cleaning up a huge mess under a microscope filled with high expectations.

We complain that he's giving Rickie the benefit of the doubt, but it's good to remember one of the draws of the Syracuse job to him has to be that we'll give him the benefit of the doubt too. Penn State will not.

I agree, Cignetti should be their first choice...But they signed him to a long term deal after just one season...I don't know that they have the cash to pay Franklin $49 million plus the buyout for Cignetti's contract, plus the new salary for Cignetti!!!! Think about how much money that is...probably in the $70 million neighborhood. They would be smart to look at Fran! Imagine what he could do with Penn state's resources..
half baked boo GIF

My cousin went to PSU. FWIW, he noted the buyout is unlikely to actually cost them $49M as Franklin wants to continue coaching elsewhere. Something to be negotiated by whomever wants to hire him.
I have a hard time believing any school would pay anything significant relative to $49M to hire Franklin.

One low key aspect to this though is if he feels he can bring in top recruiting classes with Penn State resources, I don’t know if that’s true or not. He would have multiple guys that are ready to play. In other words, he doesn’t need the benefit of the doubt because he has the most talent. If he still thinks he can build towards doing that here that is one thing, but just something to think about.

The only one that has to pay the buyout is Penn State but I think he means if another school hires him the salary they pay offsets the $49 million depending on how the buyout is structured.

That would be the usual course, but the prior poster said it was “something to be negotiated.”

I don't understand this sentiment about Nixon. He's been stellar.

I don't attribute the decline with Collins at the helm to him. It is what it is.

He's been ok. Tough to blame Collins when you only run the ball between the guards. Nixon is fine but he's nowhere near great. Not much in the way of in game adjustments either. People get carried away with his play calling.

Have you met some penn st fans? they are a cult.
I live in PA, I’ve met many. And not many talk about Joe, and those who do dont speak fondly. Maybe it’s because I’m of a younger generation but the folks I speak with are disgusted with what he did and I have yet to meet someone who defends him.

Uh...

I think you are carried away with that criticism. Our offense was stellar last year, with Kyle McCord and great offensive skilled talent around him. Our offense was stellar with Angeli and great offensive skilled talent around him.

Things have been poor with a far lesser quarterback to McCord / Angeli. I don't view Nixon's play calling through the lens of the last two games, with a lesser QB. I view it through the lens of us leading the nation in passing in 2024, and on our way to repeating in 2025 before Angeli sustained a non-contact injury.

He's been a helluva lot better than "ok." C'mon.

That may be true.

But it is crystal clear that there are people (I'm looking at you, Penn St. fans) that value their school's wins over any sort of punishment for turning their backs on child molestation.
I just think there is crossover between rooting for the school now and choosing to condemn the actions of the leadership. I just don’t believe we live in a binary world where they are mutually exclusive.

If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure that Penn State players can now enter the Transfer Portal immediately.

Let's see if there's an exodus...
They need to wait until their new coach is hired. Then they have a 15 day (?) window to enter the portal.
