Fran not on this list nor mentioned as candidate for PSU head coaching job.
The list is 4 guys that will not be leaving their jobs and Rhule, who the fans do not want.
The issue is not Fran being Plan A or B for Penn State. The issue is what happens when they get past Plans A through G and have to hire someone. There are way too many openings to be filled by GOOD coaches... especially when most of the good coaches are at places they are content, if not alums. I don't see Vandy letting Lea leave... Key is happy at Ga Tech... Brohm is from Louisville/alum... Elko is going to get paid... the BYU coach is a Mormon and they have cash... why would Lashlee leave SMU to go to Arkansas and deal with that scheduling obstacle? Lane Kiffin can only go to one school, and he seems pretty content at Ole Miss given that he is putting his family back together. It is going to take $15M a year to lure him somewhere.
Some schools are going to be hiring coaches that make their fans unhappy. Frankly, I think a coaching candidate has to weigh whether a huge salary can be offset by knowing that you will be on a short leash because most of the fan base does not want you. A Brown/Nixon package might placate fans just based on last year and the games under Angeli. Plus, be able to take Angeli with them as well. But PSU fans will not accept losing for very long. Same with all these other schools firing coaches in October. Yet it is hard to turn down doubling your salary and getting a future buyout of $30M+ even if you do stink. So... I am sorry, but this is not over until its over.
The other issue is what happens when other desirable jobs open up, including those because of who these coaching carousel hires make. Maryland has an aggressive AD with B1G funds to make a ridiculous offer to Brown. Rutgers, in theory, could too. So probably OK to just hope for Schiano and Locksley to get to bowl win totals and continue to recruit against them as "any year they are done" coaches. And those are just three schools (including PSU) that are roughly in Fran's hometown footprint. There will be SEC options with SEC money.
If Fran and Angeli get us to 10 wins next year, and Kirby Smart decides that modern football is no longer worth it, Fran would be a top candidate at Georgia. And that would be a great program to take over. However, if Angeli gets hurt again or we just finish with a mediocre record with him, Fran could regret not leaving this year. So I expect that his best play is to have his agent use these openings to get Syracuse to pay big money to keep him this offseason. To that end, throwing out these early week rumors of a QB change this week to get the fans interested again is wise. He is helping his A.D. get viewers and people in the stands...
