I figured it was an obscure reference but if anyone got it they would appreciate it.well done. This post deserves some love. Bravo.
Regrettably I have to deduct a tenth of a point for failing to complete the quote with "in a basement" (and utilize the tie in with the original post of the recording being in the basement). But otherwise that was perfection.I figured it was an obscure reference but if anyone got it they would appreciate it.

This is what happens when you go with young, inexperienced writers who are trying to make a name for themselves. Webb and Rahme were perfectly content to finish their careers in Syracuse. The new breed are looking to make their mark and move on.
My biggest issue, and it's not just with Cohen and Mink (and the Syracuse News Group) is that instead of aspiring to be Woodward and Bernstein, it seems like we are getting a lot of wannabe Skip Bayless and Stephen A Smith.
It's a bad combination of inexperience, unpolished, non-mentored folks that work on shtick, instead of honing a craft.
I actually get why they do it and why it happens, but it is terrible if you want any semblance of qualified and insightful journalism.
Keep holding out. Maybe FoxSports2 is looking for the next great agitator!

I pity you guys/gals who never read Arnie Burdick. I grew up reading 'The Old Scout'. Been down hill ever since...
There are two ways to get recognition as a sports journalist. The first is to be an exceptional writer / talent. Problem is, the medium is changing, and there are so many functionally competent sports writers out there that it is tough to get distinguished if you aren't exceptional. And also difficult with so many different 24-hour news venues, even if you are.
The second way is to be controversial, and to stir up dialogue / interest / attention--both positive and negative--as a function of being as outrageous as possible.
I think that too many sports personalities, in print / radio / television / internet journalism, opt for the second option because it is easier to get notoriety. However, it's a pretty sloppy approach, IMO, and its created a bunch of copycat hacks who generally lack merit. It takes special talent to be a noteworthy heel, and many [most?] of these up and comers try ineffectually to be shocking a la Greg Doyle, sans the personality and writing talent.

Thought the exact same thing last night. Went searching but couldn't find anything.I wish there was a repository of old Arnie columns so some of our new fans could see what a well written column looks like. Those stories were chock full of insights and observations, done in a tactful and readable way. Always a joy to read; a great bridge from guys like Grantland Rice and Red Smith. It would be a great exercise for the SMG kids trying to learn how to write and cover a team to dig some of them up and get some pointers. God knows they need help.
Or they could just review the work of Dave Rahme during his time with the Syracuse newspapers.
The only logical thing to do is admit a terrible mistake was made and beg Dave to come back. Is SMG smart enough to do that?
I see no reason for optimism.
SWC subscribed to the archives at one time, maybe he could dredge up one of AB's classic articles?I wish there was a repository of old Arnie columns so some of our new fans could see what a well written column looks like.
