(sorry - got distracted and realized I hadn't posted this yet)
- You could validly criticize every Syracuse player who played in this game for something. Yet we stayed with the 7 team in the country and were within 5 points with 3:14 left to play before the Vols closed the game out with a 12 point run, including a cheap alley-oop after their coach had indicated they didn’t need to score again. There are no ‘moral victories’, (what would an immoral victory be?), but you can see encouraging things in a game you lost and we did here.
- The big thing is that we played good defense for most of the game. We had 6 blocks and 7 seals and held the Vols, (with the aid of the Honolulu rims, which are less kind that ones we’ve usually had in Maui), to 32% first half shooting. The defense kept us in the game until that final run. Adrian deftly switched back and fourth between zone and man-for-man. Yes, it can be done.
- Chris Bell continued his aggressive scoring, hitting 7 of 13 shots, 2 of them from the arc but 5 of them inside it. He wound up leading us in scoring for the second straight game with 16 points.
- Yougottawanna get the ball to rebound well and Justin Taylor does: he led us in rebounding with 7. I wish more of his teammates wanted the ball.
- Benny Williams had a nice first half stretch that helped us get a 19-11 lead with a jumper, a rebound and a three-pointer.
- Judah Mintz took forever to get going but still found his way to 15 points.
- JJ Starling filled the stat sheet with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists.
- Naheem McLeod didn’t exactly dazzle but he overcame a sore back to get 4 rebounds and 4 blocks in 21 minutes.
3-1 with 27+ to go…
