Does Carlos start next to JJ?

Yes.

4 of the 5 starting positions would appear to be set in stone. Lampkin, Freeman, Bell and JJ. The last position is really the open question. Do we start Carlos to get a pure pg on the floor or does Red go another direction with someone like Taylor and let JJ handle the ball to start the game?

My guess is he starts. We’re just trying to get into the tourney. We were clearly chasing PGs this offseason for a reason.

Start Carlos and if it blows up, slide JJ over and duct tape it together. Is what it is.

It's bad news all around. I can't imagine Carlos and JJ defensively will be beyond dreadful but probably better on offense than the alternative.

I hope the defense is better, I just don't see it.
Offense will be this team’s strength. The defense won’t be great but it doesn’t need to be. It just needs be better than recent years, especially that Buddy, Jimmy, Cole Swider team, which was awful. This team has more athleticism, quickness, experience and depth so we should be able to defend better. JJ is really fast and athletic and has a large wingspan so he should be a good defender. I don’t know why he was so weak last season. I hope he’s been working on his defense in the offseason.

I'm hoping we take advantage of the depth and athleticism to press a little.

Pressing speeds up the game, and had the added advantage of making the guys feel like their playing for a long time even in short minutes.

Nobody likes running suicides for 4-6 minutes stretches.

They'll happy to come out for a breather. :)

Pasqualoni once explained why a really highly recruited kid with great measurables wasn't playing many snaps.

"It doesn't matter how fast you are when you're running in the wrong direction."

I think Starling and Mintz were running the wrong direction a lot of the time. I wonder if Starling will be better just having somebody new next to him.

If we lost Maliq to Duke so Jyare could start and Donnie could be a bench guy we should fire the whole staff.
All I’m saying is Jyare will be a good ACC player, has lots of experience and that Donnie might not be super impactful from Day 1, especially after a shorter summer. He will have a good year and show lots of flashes

Freeman's "shorter summer" came because he was playing for his national team in the Olympics.

I don't think that experience slowed his development. I wish he had played more, but just being around those guys and practicing with them will really accelerate his growth curve.

Plus we want and need him to settle in and get as much out of his one year (most likely) we can. You have the experience around him and off the bench for stability but need the kid to do his thing.

Rebounding should be much better, and that is a big part of defense. Limit teams to one shot, per possession.

It will be better if Bell isn't useless. Judah wasn't great but I assume he'll grab more than Carlos and Lampkin/Freeman should do better than Brown/Taylor with rebounds.

Thr build makes sense, but talent is where I'm a bit worried.

Carlos rebounded pretty well for a smaller guard at 4.4 a game. Kind of like Joe he’s aggressive in looking to get the rock and get things going. That’s of course pending if it translates here.

That's a big translation for a 6 foot or shorter guard to make. I can't imagine it being much better than a push at best.

Considering Brown/Taylor were helpless on the boards, I'd bet my house Freeman and Lampkin are better, barring injury.

Brown wasn't helpless, him and Lampkin were about the same per 40, Taylor averaged 7 per 40 but assume Freeman should be a couple over that. Freeman should also make up for the lost Maliq blocked shots since it seems Lampkin doesn't know how to.

Maliq's per 40 rebounds last year were 9.7; compared to Lampkin's 10.1. Brown's a really good rebounder, he was just undersized at the 5. I didn't watch much TCU or Colorado and I have no idea if Lampkin's a good rebounder. He's big, not sure if he leaps, hopefully he position himself well and then he should be able to eat it up.

Brown averaged 9.4 per 40 in ACC play. Lampkin 9.5 per 40 in conference play at Colorado.

My expectation is that while Brown and Taylor were getting pushed around and sometimes got the rebound anyway, that Lampkin was pushing opponents around and his teammates were getting the boards a lot of the time.

Colorado was 55th in offensive rebounds allowed and 8th in total rebounds allowed.

I imagine Lampkin was a big part of that.

Syracuse was 296th and 318th in those categories, probably the worst big conference team at rebounding.

I'm excited to have the biggest guys on the court for once.

We shouldn’t need our guards to rebound a lot of the forwards are doing their job as well. Of course one of those forwards that’s a big if

Donnie should feast on the boards if Eddie is doing his job right and Chris should have some in his lap

Excited to see what Donnie is capable of. He ended up as the #1 PF in the county. Let's hope the flashes are plentiful.

Im almost 99% sure he was talking about Johnny Morant who as i think was 1 receiver coming out that year. He had troubles till Sr. year and then he did well. Had physical tools but wasnt pickng up offense as i have heardcould be wrong.

I am pretty sure it was a linebacker, but I clearly remember the quote better than the overall anecdote.
