- The feeling was strong that, having had three nail-biters against teams that aren’t on the level we aspire to obtain, we would be unable to compete with Texas. After the 0-9 start and through when it was 25-41, that seemed correct. But after that we out-scored Texas 41-29, so apparently we can be a decent power conference team. We want to be more than that, (it’s what we’ve been for a decade), but it’s a lot better than we looked in those first three games.
- It takes defense to make comebacks: if you can’t stop the other team, you aren’t going to catch them. When it was 0-9, I thought we were done. But this team showed the passion necessary to play defense and make a comeback. I hope it’s not an outlier. I hope the team can build on this. And I hope it carries over to tomorrow night.
- Eddie Lampkin needs a purple heart. He was clearly hobbled by some kind of an injury, (they say it’s his back but he was limping badly). He also got poked near the eye. But he carried the team on his back to allow us to catch up and make a game of it. He had 14 points. I was shocked he only had 5 rebounds, (and that we lost the boards 30-35). He also had 6 assists. Everything we did on offense went though him and he was playing better defense than people think. I hope he’s physically able to play on this level for the entire season.
- JJ Starling was as dynamic as he was vs. Youngstown State but he was solid, scoring 16 points grabbing 5 rebounds and dishing 4 assists. A good day for a 2 guard – but is he really a point guard?
- I was surprised Donnie Freeman played only 15 minutes. He had 11 points, (4 for 6 from the field with a trey), amazingly only 2 rebounds, (I demand a recount!) and a steal but looked like he was going to have a much bigger night.
- Jyare Davis, an 81% free throw shooter for Delaware last year, threw bricks at the line but was out best rebounder, (7 in 28 minutes) and 11 points and a couple of assists.
3-1 and 27+ to go
