- First some exciting highlights from last night’s game:
- We jumped right on an inferior opponent and never let up. We’ve lost four games in the Round of 64 before and won another 6 by single digits. So many times I’ve seen SU play down to the level of the completion and stay just one good run ahead of a team they would be embarrassed to have lost to. Meanwhile Duke or Kansas or Kentucky could be seen in the scores above taking care of business by 30-40 points. Last night, we took care of business. No drama. Happiness is checking in on other NCAA games while your team is still playing.
- The last time an NCAA Tournament team scored fewer points than this was in 1949 when Oklahoma A&M, (now State) beat Oregon State 55-30. Also, no team seeded less than 2nd has ever won a game by this margin.
- Brandon Triche, whose game is so fragile, should benefit from opening the tournament with a 5 for 6, 20 point game.
- JB recognized that this was not a game where we needed 30 foot shots so he let Jerami Grant play 22 minutes. He responded with 5 points and 8 rebounds. Hopefully that will get him going again. Good post-season runs are often fueled by having players who have not been consistently productive becoming consistent producers. (Chris Sease in ’75, Derrick Coleman- yes Derrick Coleman, who had had an uneven first year in ’87, Todd Burgan in ’96, Billy Edelin and Josh Pace in ’03). Jerami is our #1 prospect to do this this year. But he needs to play to do that. There are situations where James is the better option. But there are situations where Jerami is the better option, too.
- The Centers combined for 23 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, Spencer Coleman of Montana was their leading scorer at halftime with 5 points on 2 for 6 shooting. Our Coleman, DaJuan, come into the game in the second half, played 15 minutes and outscored their Coleman, 12-5. Yeah, they were playing an over-matched opponent but a little confidence never hurt.
- Sometimes, going through the gauntlet of the Big East, we forget how good this team is, or can be. We’re better than 90% of the teams out there. It’s just that in the big East, we keep playing the other 10%.
- And a musical interlude, just for Seth Davis:

27-9 is pretty fine.
LET’S GO ORANGE!
