- First some exciting highlights from last night’s game:

- We jumped right on an inferior opponent and never let up. We’ve lost four games in the Round of 64 before and won another 6 by single digits. So many times I’ve seen SU play down to the level of the completion and stay just one good run ahead of a team they would be embarrassed to have lost to. Meanwhile Duke or Kansas or Kentucky could be seen in the scores above taking care of business by 30-40 points. Last night, we took care of business. No drama. Happiness is checking in on other NCAA games while your team is still playing.

- The last time an NCAA Tournament team scored fewer points than this was in 1949 when Oklahoma A&M, (now State) beat Oregon State 55-30. Also, no team seeded less than 2nd has ever won a game by this margin.

- Brandon Triche, whose game is so fragile, should benefit from opening the tournament with a 5 for 6, 20 point game.

- JB recognized that this was not a game where we needed 30 foot shots so he let Jerami Grant play 22 minutes. He responded with 5 points and 8 rebounds. Hopefully that will get him going again. Good post-season runs are often fueled by having players who have not been consistently productive becoming consistent producers. (Chris Sease in ’75, Derrick Coleman- yes Derrick Coleman, who had had an uneven first year in ’87, Todd Burgan in ’96, Billy Edelin and Josh Pace in ’03). Jerami is our #1 prospect to do this this year. But he needs to play to do that. There are situations where James is the better option. But there are situations where Jerami is the better option, too.

- The Centers combined for 23 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, Spencer Coleman of Montana was their leading scorer at halftime with 5 points on 2 for 6 shooting. Our Coleman, DaJuan, come into the game in the second half, played 15 minutes and outscored their Coleman, 12-5. Yeah, they were playing an over-matched opponent but a little confidence never hurt.

- Sometimes, going through the gauntlet of the Big East, we forget how good this team is, or can be. We’re better than 90% of the teams out there. It’s just that in the big East, we keep playing the other 10%.

- And a musical interlude, just for Seth Davis:

27-9 is pretty fine.

LET’S GO ORANGE!

Wanted to expand upon the bolded portion above, because it's so true.

Montana, for as outclassed as they looked yesterday against Syracuse, is not a terrible D1 basketball team. Not at all.

Their record coming into the game of 25-6 was their second year in a row with over 20 wins. And although they may have only 2 top 100 RPI wins this season, they can only beat the teams they play, and they have mostly done that. By all measures, Montana is a decent, middle of the pack division 1 basketball team - one that finished 1st in their conference for the second year in a row.

Some other quick notes about Montana:

- They are a very good shooting team - ranking in the top 32 in the nation in all shooting-related categories.

- Montana has lost just 2 times since Christmas (coming into the game).

- Montana has won 49 games over past 2 years - and starts 3 juniors & a senior.

- Montana played Davidson (RPI 62) in Feb, and although they lost, it was only by 5 points (87-93) - I bring this up to show how close the game was when Montana actually played a team that ended up in the Tournament...a team that pretty much had #3 seed Marquette beat yesterday until the final seconds.

- Montana played Colorado St (RPI 23) in November, again losing, but again in a close game, losing by 7 points (65-72). Colorado St, another Tournament team, won their first game yesterday against Missouri 84-72.

- Montana's worst losses (by margin of victory/loss) were: by 25 (@ BYU in November), 23 (@ Weber St in Feb), and by 10 (@ San Francisco in November)...those were the only double-digit losses Montana had all year.

And yet, Syracuse plays them yesterday and completely dismantles them, almost in embarrassing fashion (allowing them to score only 15 points in entire 1st half & beginning to play walk-ons with as many as 6 mins left in the game!). Per ESPN, "It was the most lopsided victory in NCAA tournament history for a team seeded third or worse, breaking a mark set about an hour earlier by VCU against Akron." And this was done after the team played 4 games the weekend before, then flew across the country to San Jose!

My point: This win should not be taken for granted. It was a quality performance, against a capable, if overmatched, team. (And, especially with the memories of last year's Tournament & the first round #2 seed upsets that happened to Duke & Missouri.)

We can be very tough on our own players for not playing up to their "perceived potential"...yet, to record the number of wins this program has over the past 5 or so years (in one of the toughest conferences in the nation) year after year, is truly remarkable, and should really be applauded.

I'm doing all I can to remember this, keep this perspective, and enjoy every second of this season, even a lopsided win like yesterday against a team that most people gave no chance to of winning the game.

And in more support roles than the ones you mention...Herm Harried and Derek Brower in '87 and Jeremy McNeil in '03 really were solid in the run, much more solid than we could have ever hoped.

Montana should root for us to win it all. Then they could say they were creamed by the National Champ. I can accept that they have been a good team this season, but last night, that was an horrific team. I felt terrible for them. It wasn't fun to watch us beating them up, YET - I agree with SWC: it was great to see us play up to our level and not down to our inferior opponents. That attitude says a lot to me. A lot! Keep it up, guys!

Montana actually took Davidson to two overtimes. I don't think they were as bad as most people think. We played pretty amazing. Loved the article about what Triche told the team before the game. Seems like he stepped up.

I didn't see the article, what did he say?
