the WR rotation

I have been thinking of the WRs a lot after game 1 and here is what I am imagining:

1. I believe Custis will continue to be productive all year, he has to have so much confidence right now. Definitely our main deep threat currently and I believe he will continue that trend. (over 1,000 yards on the year)

2. We need Johnson back ASAP and that will change the inside receiver spot immensely I believe. If the stars align he will be a poor man's Erv from last year (500-700 rec. yrds. this year)

3.) Pierce HAS to become more of a priority to this offense. He is a beast and has great hands. I expect his targets to go up a lot. We NEED him to get in a groove and make defenses sink in to open up our deep threats.

4.) Butler is an absolute wild card. I really do not know what to think after game one, lets hope that was an anomaly. He needs a confidence boosting game against Wagner. I say we get him going on screen passes. If he gets his act together I could see him having a solid year and being our #2 or #3 WR.

5.) THE FRESHMAN - I believe someone will step up between Queely and/or Harris. If we could get 500 rec. yards out of these two guys on the year and make defenses respect them when they step on the field that would be HUGE. And I think they have the talent to do so!

Concluding thoughts:
As all here know, need to see more out of Riley and Butler this week. If not, next man up in my opinion. It was just on display last night with the VT vs. FSU game that freshman are more then capable of making huge plays.
We need to see more run from other WRs this week and see who seizes the moment. When really breaking everything down, there are plenty of areas where we can see production out of this unit. Lets hope we see a much improved performance this weekend.

Everyone lauds the young WR talent -- but I have yet to see anything from any of them on the field, despite the current group of upperclassmen not overwhelming anyone. Yet we have another team that has a freshman WR go off for 7-121-1 against us in his first collegiate game. I don't understand. I'd also like to add that this Reed kid had offers from three MAC schools.
Its been one game and the returning “talents” are getting their due chance. I expect changes to come.

….

The players from these last two classes--where we've landed better WR talent -- have had a grand total of 1 game to show their capabilities. I'm certain that as this year unfolds, we're going to see players from the class of 2017 and 2018 start to supplant the incumbents if they continue to be ineffective. But the reason that they haven't done much is that Friday was the first time the vast majority of receivers from those two classes had the opportunity to see the field.
What you write is true, except Nykeim Johnson did play and had 7 or 8 receptions in 2017. He likely would have played on Friday, if not injured.
As to the others in those last two classes, we don't know yet how they will do, but 3 are in the two deep. The Wagner game will provide opportunities. We have had WR recruits in past seasons who had immediate impact as frosh -- so why not now?

I would run practice this week and make Devin Butler take every rep. 1st team, 2nd team, 3rd team, Butler. I would throw the ball to him every time. For the Wagner game, I'd do the same thing.

Because Friday's game was highly atypical, and only 1 WR caught a pass?

Again, this was the first game action for the majority of those guys -- let's give it a few games before ringing alarm bells about why Babers's wide receiver recruits aren't making an "immediate impact."

That "now" means starting with Wagner this week when the new WRs will have opportunities. At the moment there are many of Babers' wr recruits in the 2 deep, behind a couple of juniors who were not impressive. Yes, September is time for one of the kids to make an impact.

Friday's game was unusual in several respects, including low percentage rate of completions (under 40%). And when you focus on WR play (getting open, or not; reeling in catchable balls or not), you have to wonder who else Babers has in the stable.
