If they do the offense will nearly be jacked enough to back up any youth the team decides to deploy this spring in the rotation or bullpen. I think Betances will get some hard looks this year. He was extremely impressive at the end of th last season blowing away batters with his 90+mph fast ball and slider I presume he knows the opportunity thats coming and has worked hard on other pitches as well as Warren and Nuno. Phelps is healed and A lot has been said about the Yankees' farm system but the fact is there are quite a few pitchers with upper talent coming up. It may not be ready yet but in a few years maybe two to three, these kids will make the team far more effective from the pitching point of view. Banuelos is sit;ll a crap shoot after being touted as a "sure thing but requiring Tommy John repairs.
We find out this year if the Pineda deal was a total loss not that Montero has excelled for Seattle but at that time his value was high and Pineda was damaged goods when he arrived. Hence the emphasis on physical exams before contracts are signed and notarized in blood.

Who are these upper talent pitchers coming up? Not one is above a #4 guy right now

I wonder if Cali knows that Seattle is offering Cano 9 years/$225 mil?

BREAKING NEWS: Cano and Mariners talks break down, free agent not signing with Mariners. Source said Mariners were prepared to offer Cano 9/$225 believing he was going to accept. Jay Z made late change, demanded 10/$252. Source said Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln "exploded" after Jay Z changed it up and ended the meeting with Cano and his camp.

I still find it unlikely that Cano will choose to play out his career in baseball/endorsement Siberia.

Jay-Z's pretty smart. I wouldn't be surprised if blowing the deal was intentional.

Not so fast...

Stunning turn by Mariners, who bite on a 10th year. MT @Enrique_Rojas1 #Mariners/Cano agree. $240M/10 years. Physical next monday in Seattle.

Still, only the Yankees can offer Cano New York, the best endorsement opportunities, close proximity to the DR, and the chance for an enduring Yankee baseball legacy. It's not like the organization can't figure out what Jay-Z is doing. Offer him 7 or 8 years at $25-27 mil per and Cano will come home eventually and all parties will get what they want.

Or based on the latest news above, maybe not.

It's not 1960 anymore. You can get endorsement deals anywhere. Peyton Manning isn't missing any.

Of course, but I think the dynamic is different for NFL and NBA players because those leagues seem to market their stars more aggressively than MLB.

Baseball teams and players seem to have more intense regional followings, unless you are talking about New York or perhaps Boston or Los Angeles. Would Derek Jeter have had the acclaim and the endorsement opportunities he enjoys had he played for a small market team? Would a guy like Mike Trout be more of a national figure if he played in New York?

I love Cano's swing, but these long term deals NEVER pan out.

He'll be 41 years old in 2023.

Jeter is 39. ARod is 38. Old age catches up with everyone.

The Yanks were never giving him more than 7 years, tops.

Baseball really only matters in like 5 or 6 cities, as is.

I don't agree with that. The stands are full pretty much everywhere.
Better stated - according to the national media, baseball really only matters in 5 or 6 cities.
