this team has been horrible on 3rd down this year.

Offense 106th 34.48%

Defense 109th, 46.55%

The last time they were both that bad was 2007 (2 wins), 117th and 109th and 2008 (3 wins), 115th and 117th.

This is game planning, self scouting and breaking tendencies, play calling, and execution.

The talent on this roster is much, much better than those earlier teams.

i read the article of mcd response. that has finished for me. .he should not respond at all. intractable, rigid, and totally defensive. it speaks volumes of the lack of maturity and coaching experience. his response was that of --screw you, he has lack of adjusting to the situation at hand. he should be mature and SHUT UP! adjust to the talent and situation---recruiter yes --cood no ---shafer at this point is not much better ---immature, unable to take command over his buddies. don't get me wrong i like the guy but he needs to grow up and get beyond his "buddies"
sorry to say ru has better offensive coaches, and bulloch is very suspect on d as well.---i am disappointed, and view the staff as wannabees from the mac--the not ready for prime time players---for real

Lots of people on the board have noted that this year and a lot of it is on McD.

You should watch the actual interview. Said much of it is on him. Exact opposite of how you're judging him now.

Otherwise - spewing negativity is not a good look. Find something positive to say...

why should i watch the interview???i see the games in person and the results. he remains intractable and rigid. best he says NOTHING and moves on to adjust to the situation. perhaps you might stop drinking the koolaid after game 4 and start asking for accountability, after all his preseason hype. the only win i see at this point is wake forest. yes ---i to bought into the 8 win bs. accept for cmu i have been to every game, and will also be at louisville. by the way, while i am at it , perhaps we should try being the orangemen again and wear the traditional unis.--but i spoke to this in another thread.

did he call the wrong play or was it executed poorly? sneak on 4th and 1 , moore on 3rd and 1.. not bad play calls just didn't work.

when he runs draws on 3rd and 20 and it doesn't work is that bad or is getting 15 back and kicking a FG make it good?

where do we rank in 3rd down D when you removed Vill?

Remove Villanova? Why do that?

because how they are playing now matters more than how they played game one without the QB that tends to run for first downs. how they play D now is vastly different than game one when the QB ran more than they expected and didn't deal with properly. if it had been a scrimmage would we care ?

I have to believe that the talent level on this team is relatively good.

Obviously it's not ND or FSU talent or maybe not even Pitt talent.

But it has to be better than it has been in well over a decade - at least that's how it appears to my untrained eyes.

You really think taking Villanova out would help?

5 of 14 36% against FCS Villanova at home.

8 of 15 53 % vs CMU

4 of 14 29% vs Umd

3 of 15 20% vs ND

Man, I can't keep up.

Is the agenda now that we *don't* like the coaches?

It seems to change every few years.

Agenda?

No, just the facts.

Here's some more, last year they were 16th in 3rd down defense.

Two years ago 9th in 3rd down offense.

I guess all the talent has left the program.

We should have a goal of 4 penalites or less. That should help a little bit. We aren't nearly as good enough, or explosive enough on offense to be in 3rd and long. Anytime we get a penalty on offense and get behind the chains we are basically screwed. Watching the broadcast of the ND game back we self imploded far too much. We can't afford to give up 100 yards in penalties, especially on the offensive end. This "SHOULD" be easily corrected. Then again we have been dealing with penalties, especially false starts, for years now.

My bad. Thought you were reasonable.

I'm not really into this debate, but one might say that part of the new agenda is to claim that Marrone recruited so very well and now the new staff is squandering all their talent.

The stats are indeed damning, they need to improve. We'll see if it's because the coaches suck.

When the offense stunk under Marrone, go dismissed it as just needing to get better on third down like it was no big whoop

Now it's we stink because of third down and it's some big indictment

McDonald is a bozo though you're right there

There is nothing magical about which number down it is

marrone is such a good talent evaluator that he tied his entire NFL future to ej manuel. who he has now benched. marrone gets credit for winning a few games with nassib, who was a grob recruit. that is all marrone gets.

I agree with your sentiments. That said, "every few years?" 18 months and done. The 29K strong that buy tickets to Friday games deserve better.

Even a Marrone detractor would admit that this is enormously short-sighted and concede that Marrone did much more positive than what you wrote. I think you're trying to make a different point and stated it poorly; or if not, then well, this is enormously short-sighted.

Really, you got a link for that? Now you are just making up.

Improvement on the 3rd down after 2009 was faster than any other factor so when would I have done that?

It's much more important than a 50/50 punt decision.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to say.

Ridiculous
