This feels...significant??? NCAA potentially owes BILLIONS in back pay to athletes...

"We" don't force them, the NBA and NFL owners do because they don't want to spend the money to create viable minor leagues that feed into their systems, like baseball has. "One and done" was created by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the owners and the NBA Players Assn., not the NCAA as many mistakenly believe. I've called it the "Help us to keep from drafting another Kwame Brown" Rule because it was introduced into the CBA just after that fiasco.
The G league is comparable to baseball minor leagues, I think it’ll probably get bigger and bigger.

They need more teams to take in more players so that more 5*recruits choose the G League over college, like baseball.

It’s been tried before but if it continues to be a huge money loser? In fact the Overtine Elite is starting to offer scholarships to cover the player’s costs in it (thus no pay) so the player’s can retain eligibility to attend college. Many Players are hedging their risks going into the GLeague to retain college eligibility if the NBA doesn’t want them so the Elite is obliging to try to attract more players.

Minor league baseball is a money loser without MLB clubs financial assistance but to develop talent and to keep the talent under their control they don’t view it as a money user and are going to keep funding it.

Exact reason football and NBA don’t do it - franchise owners don’t want to lose money on it- they rely on colleges for it. MLB farm system has gotten smaller. In 2021 they cut 42 franchises. NBA’s average g league attendance is around 2,000/ game for their 31 teams. They even have a few clubs averaging less than 1,000 per game, the new G league ignite only averaged 2,700 last year. Average attendance for minor league baseball is over 4,000 per game for their 120 teams. College football and basketball teams were prevalent in colleges well before viable pro basketball or football leagues unlike baseball which had both college teams and pro leagues from way back in the 1860’s.

But the NBA does do it, G league teams are affiliated with one or two NBA teams.
