The past several days I've thought about every possible outcome that might settle this entire scandal, & NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, prepared me for this.
We now have Bernie's WIFE armed with a video camera, around the players, coaches, facilities & program, basically showcasing Syracuse University basketball...our beloved Orangemen.
We have a HC who shot off his mouth & called the "victims" Liars, thereby putting him in the precarious position of being out of a job.
And finally, that tape...that smoking gun tape, that paints a scenario that would've been rejected by the Lifetime Channel.

From now on, Penn State = Syracuse, only in different sports. What follows will undoubtedly be, a Grand Jury, possible arrests, federal indictments, etc.

And the whole, sordid, obscene scenario will now be labelled...The Syracuse Scandal.
Can someone help paint a realistic, positive spin out of this? I've already had to sit my son down & try to explain what's going on with the tape. His first words to me; " What's gonna happen to the program"?
Sadly...I have no answer.Oh Lord

It is not armageddon. Tell him we had a bad man that fooled a lot of people. The school investigated. ESPN and the Post Standard investigated. We'll take a hit. But it won't kill us.

I do not think there is one :( I do not think it is on the scale of PSU and I doubt like hell JB was covering it up and knew. Those are major separation points from Penn State.

No sugar coating this however.. it is bad.

This. Is. Thunderdome.

It's bad. At this point it's not on par with Penn State though, it's the Bernie Fine scandal. Unless something else comes out let him and his sick wife own it.

This is not PSU -- take a breather. This isn't an institutional cover-up/enablement of child rape. This is a pervert, child molester acting alone and with no knowledge by the University that pays him that this was going on behind closed doors. Apples and Oranges.

Its going to be a major embarrassment but assuming that there was no University knowledge, we will survive this (after some tough years on the recruiting trail I'm sure).

Acting alone or with his sick wife? He must resign or be fired today.

No question. You probably can't fire the guy yet because he's not been proven guilty in a court of law but I bet the University is forcing a resignation by him as we speak. I bet he's a goner by tomorrow at the latest. The University has to separate themselves from him ASAP.

It is a private university and one of his duties is recruiting. They can fire him for cause. He is unable to uphold his job duties.

He should 110% resign. Also if there are no other victims, he should come out and say that he is gay but did not molest Davis. It is the only way for him to save what little reputation that he has left.

Why would the prvate actions of one person soon to be no longer connected to the program hurt recruiting. Hire DC to work with the big men and regroup. Besides the tape never indicates at what age this supposed abuse takes place, I mean the guy could have been in his 20's messing with bernie to support his (rhymes with Beth) habit.

we can cut ties, than say we dont comment on players no longer in our program like marrone does, genius!

My point was that he can be fired because his situation hurts recruiting.

I don't think Bernie was a big recruiter recently though, if ths was about Hopkins that would have been a bigger issue. This will be old news by tournament.

yep, you nailed it. And the media is going to hound this to try and find out if the higher ups knew of the tape in 2005 and if so they'll make us (rightfully so) into PSU.

Agree 100%. them.

It doesn't matter how big a recruiter he was. His presence tarnishes recruiting.

Umm - we can lock in PSU for an extended home and home?

It's bad, but still a time zone away from Penn State.

Penn State is going through Armageddon. A lot of really bad things would have to happen for this to blow up the program. Unfortunately, I won't be shocked if there's more that implicates SU (who would have seen Lauri Fine having an affair with Bobby Davis), but I doubt there will be.

Penn State wisely fired Sandusky and Paterno. Fine and Boeheim are still employed at Syracuse, and Boeheim is still coaching. Syracuse has opted to risk destroying the future of men's basketball program for the sake of keeping Boeheim. You might notice that Penn State media coverage became less after they fired Paterno, while the coverage of Syracuse has become greater. The smartest thing Syracuse can do right now is fire Boeheim and distance themselves as much as possible from anyone who was aware of this situation. This was his program and his assistant coach...not to mention the fact that he defended Fine, even in light of the information that Fine had a ball boy living in his basement (red flag). People at Syracuse need to face the inevitable, Boeheim is finished, and the whole men's basketball program will be forever stained. The ultimate blame rests with the administration for allowing ball boys on campus without any guidelines to prevent inappropriate and predatory behavior. Rule Number 1 should be: Coaches are prohibited from having ball boys living in their basements.

I think Rule #2 was don't talk about Rule #1.

"Penn State wisely fired Sandusky and Paterno": WRONG. Penn State allowed Sandusky to coach for one year after Sandusky admitted that he inappropriately touched one of his victims. After that, Penn State allowed Sandusky access to Penn State's football facilities, where, in 2002 he was witnessed butt raping a 10 year old boy. Penn State, along with JoePa covered up the 2002 "incident." Syracuse hired an outside firm to conduct a four month long investigation into (at the time) uncorroborated allegations of abuse against Bernie Fine. From what we know, everyone Davis said would back up his story did not. Syracuse University, the Syracuse Post Standard, ESPN and the Syracuse Police Department took no action on these allegations.

"Syracuse has opted to risk destroying the future of men's basketball program for the sake of keeping Boeheim. You might notice that Penn State media coverage became less after they fired Paterno, while the coverage of Syracuse has become greater": WRONG. Just yesterday there was a discussion on Gameday whether it would be morally correct for PSU to go to a bowl game. There was also the recent revelation that a family member of Sandusky had accused him. Right now there is no evidence that Boeheim or SU knew anything, a far cry from the cover up at PSU. No one in the media has suggested Boeheim be fired. The day the PSU story broke the media began calling for Paterno to resign.

"The smartest thing Syracuse can do right now is fire Boeheim and distance themselves as much as possible from anyone who was aware of this situation": Premature, but if we find out Boeheim knew something then fire him, take his name off the court and put up a new 2003 championship banner that doesn't feature him.

I also disagree that the program is forever stained. Everyone I know, and many hate SU basketball, don't liken this to PSU at all. SU has largely been complemented in the media for its handling of the situation. With respect to what Boeheim should have known, that's a far cry from what Paterno actually knew. I agree that from the perspective we have now, the idea of a ball boy living with Fine is strange. But, it wasn't like Fine was single and childless. There are plenty of stories of kids with troubled back grounds living with other families. I doubt this would have raised any questions in the 80s, now it certainly would and should

wait that presumes that he was ever able to recruit.

should've fired him years ago.

Being good at recruiting is not the point. If you have a perceived molester as assistant coach, it will hurt your program. Fire him now.
