to the coaches and the players who stay: Get out there and build yourself a team.
Its like the beginning of MLB or NFL free agency. Its a whole new world.
I have long thought that that JB could take his'n and beat your'n, and then he can turn around and take your'n and beat his'n.
Now we will get to see; literally.

May the fun begin.

It’s amazing how many bitter old men there are about this transfer portal. I hope none of you ever looked for a job while you were at one or left for one
It's not great. Imagine a big playground with 1500 kids and 300 coaches. Unfortunately most of the coaches will want the same 100 players leaving 1400 on the back burner. Kind of reminds me of my old fraternity parties. Who you lusted after at 11 pm was probably different than who you ended up with at 3 am.

But, if you got laid, it was all good.

you never wore beer goggles?

The portal is one big playpen of players who aren’t as good as they thought they were. Many of them are misses that coaches made in evaluations. I’m afraid about a third of them are not going to find a new team. It will suck having to pay your own way in school.

I disagree. I think there’s plenty of guys who are at lower tiered schools who have proven they are good enough to play at the P5 level

I think back to Joe Cremo who was a star at UAlbany and left to transfer to Nova. I'm sure it was a great personal experience but it didn't help either UAlbany or Nova.

I hope I’m wrong, but I have reservations this staff can effectively use the transfer portal to upgrade the talent and put a high quality team on the floor next year. It’s not really JB’s style:
1) Unless you are a Top 50 player, you typically aren’t seeing the floor in your first year
2) While we had success with transfers in the past, they were mostly from guys that redshirted a year (Wes, G, Hughes). Closest comp is the grad transfers and while we’ve had some good and bad, the teams with grad transfer starters weren’t our best.
3) Any player looking at SU will know it’s going to be the Buddy Buckets show next year and potentially the following year. Will they want to come to a school in a clear supporting role? I don’t think we can get a quality guard in the transfer portal for that reason alone.
4) The zone, the zone, the zone. It’s become a hindrance to recruiting.
5) JB is a cranky old guy that doesn’t relate to the younger generation.

That’s a lot to overcome. I have a bad feeling we’re going to end up with portal scraps and really struggle next year.

He was a grad transfer. Wikipedia says he loved Nova and it was like family. Seems like it worked out okay for Joe, which is what matters.

JB being a hoop junkie watching games will help ID guys, I would think.

We’ve had some good transfers here. JB knows talent. We’re a successful program that sends players to the NBA. I mean, the chances of our picking up at least one good transfer are pretty good. In fact, if I’m JB I am telling recruits he won’t be around forever and if they want to play for a legend of the game better get on the bus now.

Is this guy involved with running the gym in the portal?

I don't know the average age of people that don't like this rule. It seems to me, and my own history, that the younger you are, the more intolerant you are to guys moving on.

Im all for guys transferring to get to a better situation but its getting out of hand. When 5 or 6 guys on a team are transferring out it's a problem.

portal scraps AKA "sloppy seconds"

Yes: with the organization, not the employees. The time of dictators, “my way or the highway”, “you figure out why your not playing”, “i don’t care if your better, I got my guys”, coaching is now a dinosaur.

As I did not follow much college basketball this year, can someone clarify if this is a specific one year exemption (seemed to remember hearing that due to COVID) or is it a permanent thing.

For who? Who is it a problem for? It's not a problem for the kids. It really isn't a problem for the coaches as long as they are willing to put in the work. There is only one place that it is a problem and that doesn't apply to us. That is the smaller school which brought in a kid who turned out a lot better than anyone could have foreseen. And the big schools let it be known that they are interested now. But, that doesn't apply to us and that isn't what is making you unhappy. You don't want us to lose kids because you think that will make us weaker. And if it is shown that lo and behold, it makes us a better team to have good players leave and better players come in, you will be all in favor. It's not about the rule or the movement. It's about how it effects your Syracuse viewing enjoyment. That is okay. But be honest about it.

No it's just a bad look for college bball. It has nothing to do with me. Whatever happened to working your butt off to earn minutes or sticking through tough times? The sense of entitlement is ridiculous.

I feel like that's because those teams mostly had a glaring hole that had to be plugged with a grad transfer because they had no other options, which is a bad position to start from and makes you more likely to have it be a down year.
