I completely agree! My 9 year old son told his 17 year old cousin he is a Syracuse fan and his cousin replied that you are only a fan because your Dad (me) is a die hard fan and that you couldn’t name more than 2 Syracuse players. Then my son named off the entire starting lineup and was naming all the backups when his cousin admitted my son was a true fan. This is very true.
My 13 year old really got into the team this season. We were shooting hoops in the driveway last night, and he was talking excitedly about how good the team could be next season. I had to let him know that Braswell is gone, and Quincy might be gone, and Sidibe & Marek probably won't come back, and there's a chance one of Girard or Kadary could leave, and Newton might go.
Now, he is excited about the incoming players, so it works both ways, but this is all a LOT to follow.
He's an SU fan because I raised him that way. But needless to say, not everyone is a lunatic fan like me. And we live 300 miles from Syracuse. Kid's tend to develop their fandom based on having a parent with a favorite team, or by developing an attachment to a favorite player. The latter hardly exists in college hoops anymore.
I told my son yesterday that Ajax is transferring and he knew exactly who Ajax was. It’s hard keeping young fans caring as much with a big roster turnover but every season there are new, fun Syracuse players to discover and cheer for.
