this is one of those teams...

Yeah, D-1 athletes often cringe at the sight of other teams. Have you seen our schedule. No kid playing on those BCS teams is gonna be in awe of SU. They never would have gotten to be D-1 athletes otherwise.

Or D-2 as in LeMoyne's case. Yes, I know it was only an exhibition.

pro athletes sometimes get intimidated. yet college kids don't? we're a physically imposing team, that matters.

If we can shoot... national champions.

That's the really big IF.

I think Ennis will shoot well enough to keep the defenses honest. CJ will be a solid three point shooter and I think he'll be more assertive from deep this year (out of necessity--no Dirty). Grant will be solid from 17'. If Cooney, G and or/ BJ step up from the outside... with our forwards' versatility and ability to the attack the rim (not to mention TE's ability to penetrate and dish), we'll be very difficult to defend.

That being said, I see us as only an average shooting team but I think we'll be able to make up for it with our other strengths. Team will be flawed if we don't find a solution at the 2. Our centers-by-committee will be serviceable at the least.

I think we're just going to dunk the ball every possession. Much higher percentage shots than 3s.
It helps when you're nine feet tall and the thickest burger in history. I think some of our guys might shoot 150%. Well within their capabilities.

Eh, I dunno. Seems like smaller teams can do ok and it's those smaller big guys who give our big guys fits. Throw in the defensive rebounding issues as well. Insert Tyler...

I think it does come down to shooting. Teams packing things in and daring us to shoot will be the strategy until we prove otherwise. I also hope the coaches can draw up more variety and ways to score. This one pass and chuck business and not making the defenses shift to the other side of the floor can't continue.

That's my biggest Boeheim pet peeve. I do not subscribe to the notion that he just rolls the balls out. However, he's not the best coach at teaching offensive schemes. Far too often we do fall into the "pass and chuck business."

I think TE's floor general skills will help us not get bogged down and in those bad habits. One of Tyler's strengths is that he's like a coach on the court; that will be obvious, despite his freshman status. Also, we finally have a point guard who will feed the post. I'm hoping he and our big men are working on their chemistry. If DC and Rak develop any kind of post game...wow.

Agreed. No question. If not on Rak/DC, then we probably have enough talent to overcome it. Tyler being here is huge, imo. Still, it probably comes down to shooting.

I disagree. Look at the offense he gas gotten from marginal pro material:
Moten
Brown
Nichols
Rautins
Devo
Byrnes
Johnson

etc.

It's about scheme.

Our base offense is fine but rarely do we deviate from it. We need more wrinkles. The zone is the zone but it wouldn't be anything if JB didn't make adjustments, even within games. The zone is constantly morphing. I rarely see JB making similar adjustments to our base offense. We rely on our athleticism to overcome our opponents. Outside of the high pick and roll and motion, what else do we do? Maybe set a back screen and throw a lob? I just wish we were more diverse on offense with what we run.

When you have good guards , we have less problems, Jonny, Devo, Andy 2 who could shoot and drive, and Andy who ran off screens, great catch and shoot. In 2003, Gerry, Kueth, Billy, again 2 guys who could drive and shoot, and Kueth who could catch and shoot.

I like our potential to run a clearout for Grant/Gbinije/Ennis whoever this year. Like the one we ran for Joseph in 09-10.
With Cooney and CJ's ability to catch and shoot just need BJ, Ennis, Roberson, Patterson, Grant to step up as that 3rd perimeter shooter. Got to be able to shoot from the corners though (even if its inside the line) to do that.
CJ's experience working laterally out of the left corner off the dribble is also a big help.

where the other team is gonna see us in warmups and stuff their pants. we're tall. we're big. we're ripped. got some sick athletes. even our token white guy is jacked. i think we gonna intimidate alot of teams.
that lasts until their coach says they are afraid of u. that's why they tavern league u

Perhaps it's just my natural pessimism...but do we have a backcourt?

Yes, I'm encouraged by Boeheim's uncharacteristically high praise for Tyler Ennis' ability.
But he's still an unproven freshman.
And compared to the question marks at the 2...Ennis looks like Mr. Solid.

I thought Ennis played like an all-conference senior in his first four games.
No exaggeration. Felt like he'd been there a hundred times.

You have to remember. Carleton would be competitive in many conferences in D1 and they were running in mid-season form. Ennis is the real deal and the off guard decision will play itself out in the next few months.

I think you're right, that our guards are not nearly as strong as our forwards. But no frontcourt in the country is as strong as our forwards. So as a comparison, anything less than perfect would look like a soft spot.

I am hoping the guards "compliment" our forwards by getting them the ball, getting into the lane to pass to the bigger guys, and hit their open shots. They don't have to be superstars, but I think Ennis will be one anyway.

The team may not be there yet, but you are in mid-season form. Kind of late for a young fellow like you to be up isn't it?

Don't kid yourself. Certain elite teams intimidate other teams. No question about it.
